“Addressing Addiction in Our Community: Identifying Needs and Taking Action”

TOPIC:
• Identify an addiction-related need in your community. How can you, as a citizen of your community, be
part of a solution or become more involved in a current solution? You are encouraged to reach out to
addiction professionals, city council members, Human Service Departments, and substance abuse
programs to gain better insight on what the needs are and if there is anything currently in place.
• WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE?
• Part 1 of your paper should be an examination of the community you live in and the research you have
done to describe that community. What evidence exists that supports your perception of your
community? (this is where speaking to community partners is important).
• Part 2 should look at what is either a) already happening in your community, or b) what you think would
be a good activity to start in your community AND how you (or anyone) could be involved in those
activities.
• Part 3 should include some research on the activity; what supports the action that an agency is taking, or
the activity that you propose? What evidence would lead you to believe that this is a feasible or
appropriate step to take? You do not have to prove it will work, but you do need to present evidence that
supports it.
