“The Power of Influence: Exploring the Impact of Horror Genre on Society”

Research Essay
Assignment Guidelines: Five (5) pages length, Times New Roman, 12 Font, double-spaced,
with top left header, an original essay title for your research centered at the top of the first page.
You essay must include 5 separate/unique citations. A Works Cited page must be submitted with
your essay. Your essay must include at least 5 paragraphs: Introduction, at least three body
paragraphs, and a conclusion Your essay is worth 250 Points of your final course grade.
Influential Research
The Assignment: You are to compose a five (5) page researched essay focusing on any of the
suggested topics or an approved topic of choice.
Suggested Essay Topics:
 Research the horror genre (or any other genre) and the impact it has had on our
society. Many different avenues this can take: a look at the impact of violence
from the genre, a look at how the horror genre has been impacted by shifts in
society (ie more gore), impact of horror genre on human hysterics (belief in
zombies or witches)
 Research the impact of an author’s or artist’s life on their work (Edgar Allen Poe).
This is not merely a biographical study of the author, but a research paring up the
author’s life and their work with the intent to study whether their work was
impacted by events in their life
 Research the speeches or writing of a historical figure and the impact their words
have had on history. Again, this is not merely a research reporting the details of
the historical figures work, but an in depth look at how their words changed
history.
 Research a historical event and discuss how the event impacted history. How did
this event alter the course of our history?
 Research a book, movie or T.V. show and discuss the impact it has had on pop
culture, the genre it represents or society as a whole. There are works of literature,
art, and cinema that have changed the way we think as a society or that have
changed how we think about the genre it belongs to.
 Choose your own topic that really interests you that you would like to learn more
about. You will need to find a way to discuss how your topic has made an impact
in some way on society, on a certain industry, or how your topic has been
impacted in some way.
While you are welcome to select any topic that interests you or to adapt any of the suggested topics, your
research at some point should look at the influence or impact that your topic has had or how your topic
has been influenced or impacted.
