Part I: Project Proposal
Throughout this course, you will be creating deliverables as part of an overall construction project beginning in this unit. You will build on a project plan with the final deliverable culminating in Unit VII.
For this assignment, you are given five options (see below). Details about each option have also been provided in the Unit II Lesson. Executives at Suburban Homes have approached you to develop a project using one of the five options below, so they can maintain a balanced portfolio.
Single-family homes in a suburban area
Small multifamily property
Small apartment building
Large apartment complex
Commercial building
For this assignment, select one of the options for construction. Note: You will be using this selection for the entire course for other assignments.
Create a project proposal about the option that you have selected. Within your proposal, describe the scope of your project. These details will be used in later assignments to determine a budget and schedules. Refer to the Unit II Lesson to help identify the scope of each option.
Include a SWOT analysis to show the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for this selection. Refer to Exhibit 2.2 in the textbook for more details on how to create the SWOT.
Based on your selected option, what teams and vendors may need to be involved with your project? For example, a commercial building may require heavy construction equipment that would not be needed for a single-family home.
Part II: Work Breakdown Structure
Based on your selection, Suburban Homes is requesting that you complete the work breakdown structure (WBS) to several levels such that the lowest level represents work packages and activities. Also, you need to make sure that no work components are missing to deliver the project outcome based on your selection. You are asked to exclude the project management part of it and instead focus on the what aspect of the project and not on the how aspect of the WBS. Once the WBS is completely developed, please perform the following tasks:
Expand the WBS so that work packages or activities are defined at the lowest level.
Develop a project schedule at the lowest level of WBS elements after defining logical relations.
Estimate durations of each element in the network.
Compute forward pass and backward pass to determine project duration.
Determine a critical path for the project.
Note: Include the square footage, the number of rooms, bathrooms, and other details that you identified in Part I. Also, include the estimated time needed to complete the work, costs, and scope in your submission. Include a written report about the selection made, and describe ways to overcome project constraints.
Your completed assignment must be at least three pages in length. External sources are not required, but if used, please also add a reference page.
