Introduction:
In Aristotle’s concept of eudaimonia, or flourishing, to the Enlightenment’s emphasis on individual rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” the quest for happiness has been a defining aspect of human aspiration. In contemporary America, however, this quest is frequently conflated with material success and external validation. Some argue that happiness is indeed found in the accumulation of wealth and status, suggesting that financial security and societal recognition are the primary keys to a fulfilling life. This perspective posits that by meeting these benchmarks, individuals naturally achieve happiness. Contrary to this belief, true happiness is not derived from external accomplishments or possessions but from intrinsic factors such as meaningful relationships, a sense of purpose, and emotional well-being. The average modern American’s misunderstanding of happiness lies in the misalignment between these deeper sources of contentment and the societal pressures to achieve superficial markers of success. Understanding happiness requires peeling back the layers of societal expectations and exploring the core elements that contribute to a genuinely fulfilling life. This exploration necessitates a shift from the external to the internal, from the material to the immaterial. The average modern American does not truly understand what happiness is.
Ultimately, the average modern American does not truly understand what happiness is because societal norms and values prioritize superficial achievements over the intrinsic aspects of well-being that foster genuine happiness.

Materialism/Consumerism (marketing, advertisement, materialistic items (jewelry, clothes, etc.
The last para: Family/Familial happiness and well-being
