Debunking the Myth of Vitamin C and Inflammation: The Truth About Citrus Fruit Juices and Immune Health

Debunk a popular “myth” – Challenge a contemporary belief (ie Columbus was a hero, vaccines are necessary). Expose flaws in the accepted idea, and present opposing viewpoints.
Your final paper of 5-7 pages (typed, double-spaced, plus a title page) is to be submitted no later than the final class. The paper will adhere to standard rules for manuscript form, MLA style of documentation, and conventional grammar and style.
Each paper will utilize a minimum of three academic sources (preapproved). All internet sources MUST be from respectable sites, but at least ONE source must be located through the Touro Library proprietary databases

The human immune system protects our bodies from harmful pathogens threatening our homeostasis. When we develop a sickness, our body reacts and attempts to destroy the toxic substances. Inflammation is a typical immune response that can lead to unfortunate damage if our body cannot relate to the response. “Citrus fruit juices are a particularly good source of vitamin C and folate, which both have roles in sustaining the integrity of immunological barriers and in supporting the function of many types of immune cells including phagocytes, natural killer cells, T-cells and B-cells” (Miles and Calder). Vitamin C within citrus juices reduces the response to inflammation and could help maintain our immune balance. Various amounts of bioactive polyphenols within the fruit juices reduce our inflammatory markers. For example, “. Hesperidin, hesperetin, naringenin, naringin, and narirutin have all been found to have anti-inflammatory effects in model systems, and human trials of hesperidin report reductions in inflammatory markers” (Miles and Calder). Studies have shown that Orange Juice specifically reduces inflammatory responses astronomically. The C-reactive protein is a specific inflammatory marker directly linked to drinking orange juice.
