SULA by Toni Morrison
Use specific events and characters from the novel to support the essay.
In an interview, Toni Morrison discussed her central character, Sula: “There are strange women in the world. Here and there, now and again they appear: women without a center, a core; women who do not connect with other people. They are evil; they may be charming, frightening, fascinating, repelling, but make no mistake they are classically evil. This is a story about such a woman, Sula Peace.” Do you agree with Toni Morrison’s description of her character? Do you view Sula as the embodiment of “evil?”. Is Nel “good”? Do you think authors should have the last word about the characters they create? Should authors leave the interpretation of the characters they create to the reader? Explain your opinion of the characters Sula and Nel.
