“The Impact of Nicotine on Adolescent Psychology: Exploring Cognitive Dissonance and Individualistic vs Collective Factors”
My topic focuses on Adolescent Psychology, more specifically, “ Nicotine, Adolescent, and stress “. The reason why I was interested in this topic, is since our society today falls prey to the hands of nicotine and other addictive substances. Young adults and teens ranging from ages 14-19 years old are using a substance called “e-cigarettes”. The estimated amount they used comes around 25.8 percent and makes them the largest users of the United States. This connects with the topic of cognitive dissonance, which we learned in chapter twelve in our textbooks. One way that this topic can connect to cognitive dissonance is adolescents might be pressured into using nicotine due to managing their stress levels and experience in seeing their own peers using the substance. This can also lead to increased risk in stress levels which can cause the adolescent to develop a struggle to come to a positive conclusion. Individualistic and Collective factors also contribute to this topic. For example, Individualistic factors for an adolescent using nicotine could be using the substance due to their free access from “ personal freedom “ , while collective factors may decline the use of nicotine due to their cultural differences within their family reasonings.
