  • Title: Solving the Ethical Dilemma of Racial Profiling in Policing: A Policy Analysis and Recommendation for the State of [State Name]

Students are to write a 10 – 12 page research paper on an important ethical subject where they develop and ethics policy. In essence, you have the opportunity to solve an ethical dilemma on a grand scale. Students should identify an ethical topic they are interested in studying and create a policy and/or a recommendation to a state governing agency about how this ethical issue should be handled moving forward. Your choices should be fueled by empirical research and scholarly sources on the subject. This ethical issue will impact more than just your own individual self—it will affect the lives of all those across the state or even the country. Your job is to write a research paper for the state governor to use as the basis for his/her decision on this issue.
As you write your paper, consider the moral rules that will support your decision.
General structure of your policy analysis
    1. Conduct a brief review/synopsis of the relevant facts.
    2. Identify what you believe to be the major ethical issues and the relevant underlying values of each opposing side.
    3. Set forth your recommendations for the continued use, modification, or discontinuation of this policy. Your decision must have some sort of rationale behind it. This is where you will present an answer to the policy issue at hand. Before you can do this, you will have to decide on what ethical system underlies your analysis. There is no right/wrong system of ethics—choose the one with which you most closely identify. If you are a utilitarian, your stance may be very different than if you identify with ethical formalism or an ethic of care. But, as we know from our class exercises, despite our different ethical systems, we may encounter the same results.
Some topic suggestions: (these are not required; just ideas for you to consider)
    1. A policy of racial profiling by police officers to reduce and prevent crime on the streets.
    2. The use of plea-bargaining for defendants charged with felonies.
    3. The waiver of very young offenders (namely, “kids that kill”) to adult court and making them subject to adult processing and punishment.
    4. The use of rehabilitation as the dominant model for corrections.
    5. The use of restorative justice programs.
    6. The use of “chain gangs,” “tent city,” and other novel punishments and how they impact prisoner rights.
    7. Any other current criminal justice policy issue, if approved by me (the death penalty is not an option since we will be discussing this in class)
    Please adhere to these directives:
Organization: Title page, Abstract, Introduction, Body of the Paper, Conclusion.
The papers should have a brief introduction, appropriate transitions between topic areas, and a short conclusion. I am interested in each student’s ability to craft an organized approach to an ethical issue in criminal justice. Synthesize the literature on the subject and critically assess the ethical issue.
Substance: Each student should be able to craft a well-reasoned ethical argument. Since we will be addressing “hot” topics of current debate, emotions will run high. However, please try to support your argument with more than just emotion. Where appropriate, essays should draw from course readings, lectures, and discussions particular to the subject matter.
References: Consult at least five (5) outside peer reviewed sources to complete this assignment (the course readings do not count). Please consider the five-source requirement as establishing the baseline; students seeking higher grades are advised to broaden their research.
THESE MUST BE PEER REVIEWED SOURCES

  • “The Instrumentalization of the Past: Exploring the Role of Collective Memory in Media and Society”

    PY3067 Social Memory
Final essay due: May 13, 2024
    Length of assignment: 3-4,000 words.
In this essay, students are challenged to think about the meaning and resonances of the
past in the present. Reading the newspaper or watching film or television, we are
constantly bombarded with interpretations of the past and what the past should mean to
    us.
I want students to ask: How is the past used and instrumentalized? How and why is the
past represented in the way that it is?
I suggest that students begin with the notion of “present pasts” but there is some latitude
in the kind research that you might carry out. I am available for discussion and
    consultation.
As part of their research, students may choose to document a memory place or museum,
conduct an ethnography of a museum or tourist site, analyze how a historical event is
presented in film or social media forums, carry out a scholarly investigation of the
memory of a historical figure, engage in a discussion of a relevant theoretical or
    empirical problem in the literature.
Some questions to consider: What is the relationship between personal and collective
memory? How do collective narratives become part of our personal story? What is the
purpose of public memory? Does public memory achieve its goals? How?
All projects should include 10-15 pages of written analysis and at least six scholarly,
beyond course readings, that directly address your question. In addition, you should use
eight sources, at a minimum, from class readings. In other words, your bibliography
should include at least 14 sources that you use in your thinking and writing and cited in-
text and in the bibliography. Use both indirect and direct citations–do not overquote.

  • “Evidence-Based Practices for Improving Quality of Life for an Elderly Stroke Patient: A Case Study Analysis”

    .
It is important to be able to identify evidence-based methods and practices and to recognize how these practices are used for specific clients in appropriate settings. This journal activity will allow you to think through these important actions and to continue reflecting on the case study that you will address in your final project.
First, review the case study in the Final Project Guidelines and Rubric document and select one of the following issues or conditions from the case study:
    Mobility issues
Assistance with activities of daily living
    Difficulty paying bills
    Stroke
    Trauma
Then identify evidence-based practices that might be used with a patient like Jean across at least two different settings:
    Hospital
    Rehabilitation center
    Home healthcare
    Hospice
In 250 to 300 words, explain how evidenced-based practices can be used to assist Jean and improve her quality of life, regarding one issue or condition across at least two different settings. Ideally, the practices you discuss will be relevant in multiple settings, but you may need to explain how these practices can be adjusted to fit certain settings.
Remember to always approach the issue from the perspective of a human services professional as opposed to that of a healthcare professional such as a nurse or a doctor.
Submit assignment as a Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins
    Below is the case study
    Case Study
Jean is an 87-year-old woman who was admitted to Manchester Community Hospital, in Manchester, New Hampshire, after having a debilitating stroke that paralyzed the left half of her body. She is a widow, and her three adult children live in different states. She needs assistance eating, transferring to her wheelchair, and most other activities of daily living. Her medical issues related to the stroke are quickly being resolved, and it is time to begin assessing her needs for discharge and post-discharge. It is important to note that Jean’s savings have been totally depleted and her medical bills are mounting since her healthcare insurance has proven to be inadequate to cover her medical expenses. Her limited pension and social security barely covered her living expenses prior to her stroke and are unlikely to cover the escalating expenses that she will undoubtedly encounter based on her medical condition. Moreover, Jean has been clinically diagnosed with PTSD after being raped by a neighbor in her home two years ago. She is still grappling with the effects of the trauma, even as the criminal case against the perpetrator slowly moves forward. Although her family modified the home to make it more secure and less vulnerable to intrusion, her current lack of mobility is weighing heavily on her psychologically. Despite her current issues, Jean derives great comfort from her faith as a devout Catholic. She typically has a wonderful sense of humor and is highly organized, having worked as an elementary school teacher during her earlier years. She participates regularly in the local garden club and on her neighborhood welcoming committee. She has a wide circle of friends with whom she interacts. Her children are currently staying in Manchester to oversee her care and to contribute to the development of her post-discharge care plan. It is unclear whether any of the children will stay on after her discharge to help care for Jean, but this seems unlikely unless considered essential by the medical team. An interdisciplinary team is being developed to design a comprehensive plan for Jean’s post-discharge care.
