  • “Assessing the Past, Present, and Future of Correctional Ideologies: A Comprehensive Analysis of Political and Social Influences and Legislation”

    The purpose of this assignment is to apply what you have learned throughout this course in an analysis and assessment of the past and present correctional ideologies to determine appropriate directions for future correctional programming.  An analysis of recent political and social influences (get tough sentencing, legalization, deinstitutionalization, etc.) should be used in this analysis with a focus on the demographics of those under correctional supervision and whether the political and social influences are based in the realities of the correctional setting. Additionally, no less than two pieces of current legislation (within the last 20 years) should be assessed in your analysis of future directions for correctional programming.

  • Title: Problem Statement and Outline for Final Research Project

    Instructions: This week (week 1) you will choose your topic and submit your proposed Problem Statement for your research paper as well as an outline.
    The Outline will consist of 4-5 pages. The Title Page and Reference Page are not included in the page count. The paper/outline describes your final research project. Each major section within your final project should be covered in this paper. The Project Outline must be in narrative form, and be descriiptive enough that explains each element of your project. The use of graphics and charts is highly encouraged.
    The Final Research Project will be 20-25 pages and due in week 8. The project must include a title page, table of contents, abstract, and a reference page. The project will demonstrate the knowledge acquired through course work completed to date. The project is an application of this knowledge and requires the student to analyze and interpret the topic of interest. The use of graphics and charts is highly encouraged.
    This report must be original work. This report cannot include papers submitted in previous courses.

    APA cover page
    Abstract (1/2- 1 page)
    2. Introduction to the topic, problem or thesis statement
    3. Literature Review Background Research on the topic
    4. Discussion of your ideas on the topic and problem
    5. Discussion of new solution(s) to the problem
    6. Conclusion
    Looking Ahead
    The final paper must have the following key sections, clearly identified, though they can be titled creatively to reflect your question and interests:
    I. An introduction that states the problem and why your topic is important.
    The research question, clearly and concisely stated as a question. What do you hope to answer with this research? This section should also include definition of terms.
    II. Literature Review – background research on this topic
    III. The results/ discussions, describes what you have learned that helps answer the research question. What are you ideas about this topic?
    IV. The discussion of potential new solutions.
    V. The conclusion, which summarizes the key points of the paper and suggests further research needed on this topic.
    VI. A list of references in APA format.

  • “Negotiation Analysis of a Real-Life Case: Applying Course Concepts and Theories”

    Description of assignment
    Students will work on a complex case and they will need to analyse and evaluate the negotiation(s) that have been made with the critical application of course concepts and theories.  Please note, by no means are students expected to try to apply all the theories and concepts we cover in the course.  The selection and application of RELEVANT concepts and theories for the analysis is the task and forms part of the assessment.  So is the way students’ collection and assessment of the information about their case.
    Topic: 
    Own choice of real-life case – recent (within a maximum of 12 months!) or current, ongoing.  The case topic can be a general issue (a recent international negotiation, for example) or a recent business case.  
    I am expecting students to find their own topic of interest for this work.  Famous historical cases will not be accepted. Also, cases that are older than 12 months will not be accepted.  If in doubt, check with the module leader.  Students will have to research their case by using news items, or company information.

    ·       The word count is for the body of the essay – i.e., it does not include the Cover Sheet, Title Page, Appendix, and the List of References. 
    ·       A penalty of 10% per 250 words beyond the limit may be applied.
    Editing:
    Type up your essay using 12 point fonts, and about 2 cm margin. 
    Include page numbering.
    Use appropriate structure including introduction, main body containing your arguments and supporting evidence and a summary/conclusion section. 
    Proofread for spelling and grammatical errors. 
    Provide in-text citations and reference any of your sources – both for the case itself and for the applied theories and negotiation concepts!
