  • “Analyzing and Comparing Major Legislation in the Global War on Terror: A Biblical Perspective” Title: The Role of Local Law Enforcement in Building Trust with the Community

    OVERVIEW
The purpose of this paper is to analyze, compare, and contrast various pieces of major
    legislation
that relate to the global war on terror (i.e. the U.S.A. Patriot Act (USAPA), the National Defense
Authorization Act (NDAA), etc.). Students will also discuss the advantages and
    disadvantages
of each piece of legislation discussed. Finally, students will select a major
    piece of legislation
and take a stance either in support or opposition of that legislation.
    Students will provide a
cogent and academic argument to support their stance based upon sound, scholarly research.
    INSTRUCTIONS
All papers must be completed through the lens of a Biblical Worldview where students will
incorporate appropriate biblical passages and/or resources. The paper must be completed in APA
formatting and consist of 20-pages (excluding all title, abstract and reference pages). In
addition to the course text, all papers must utilize at least 15 outside scholarly sources to support
    evaluation an analysis.
At a minimum, the following sections are required:
     Introduction
o Provide a brief introduction about the key elements in the paper.
     Background and Problem Statement
    * Preliminary research must be conducted using practitioners, government sources,
articles, etc., to identify and discuss the major pieces of legislation such as those
listed above (The USA Patriot Act, The NDAA, etc.).
    * The thesis statement will discuss and describe the concepts cited and the
significance of each as they relate to one another. The thesis statement must be
clear and concise (approximately 250 words).
     Literature Review
    * The literature review is a critical component of a proposal. This section highlights
what has been achieved related to your topic.
    Answer the following questions:
 What is the USA Patriot Act?
     What is the NDAA?
 What other pieces of legislation play a key role in prosecuting the global
    war on terror?
 What role does the FISA court and process play?
 What role has the NSA played within this process?
 What technologies have been employed to further this legislation?
 What role does indefinite detention play?
 What is unlawful enemy combatant?
 What aspects of the legislation is viewed as Constitutional?
 What aspects of the legislation are brought into question with regards to
    the U.S. Constitution?
 How has the legislation impacted American civil liberties?
 What are the supporting arguments for the legislation?
 What are the opposing arguments against the legislation?
 How should the legislation be changed or amended?
 What are the central themes and arguments in current literature?
 What is missing from current literature?
***Scholarly articles are required. Although some information from government
sources may be used sparingly, approximately 80% of the review should
incorporate recent scholarly articles (published within the last 10 years).
o Do not state your opinion in this section. All information provided must be
properly cited and must be from quality academic sources. To achieve this, use
direct quotations, paraphrases, and synthesized information from multiple
sources. For example, this statement synthesizes the opinions of 4 scholars:
“Researchers have argued that disaster planning is critical to minimizing the
negative effects for emergency responders (Brown, 2010; Caldwell, 2009; Moore,
    2011; Stanley, 2008).”
     Conclusion
o Summarize your findings. What are the key points in the literature with regards to
the selected piece of legislation and how it impacts both the U.S. efforts in the
    global war on terror?
o Since passage, how has the legislation impacted the average American citizen’s
    civil liberties?
o What steps should be taken to further improve the legislation?
o What steps might be taken to reduce any potential encroachment on American
    civil liberties?
o What type of response is needed moving forward? What or who should be
engaged (e.g., the political community, military, federal law enforcement, local
    law enforcement citizens, etc.)?

  • Title: “The Necessity of Outside Intervention: Addressing the Looming Crisis in Venezuela”

You will prepare your Research Paper Assignment on the topic: Why should outside actors (state or NGOs) intervene in another state? Choose which state will require intervention or be in conflict within the next two (2) years. Discuss the threat (war, famine, economic collapse, natural disaster, coupe, genocide, terrorist attacks, etc.), the method used to intervene, the outside states or groups (IGOs – NGOs) that will respond, political leaders inside and outside the state in conflict, how religion hurts or helps the situation, and what the realistic outcome will be.
In your research paper, explain both why you selected your state/actor and why you selected the other outside states or groups involved in the conflict or intervention. Biblically speaking, do these outside actors have the justification to intervene? Explain your position. Do not just repeat a timeline or history. Also, this must be a new situation, not a continuation of a current intervention with a changed/expanded approach.

It is OK to quote from and cite the program notes if the musical context provided by the program notes directly influences your personal experience of the music and connects with the topics presented in class.
    Length
The concert report must be a minimum of 500 words.
The best reports tend to be 600-800 words.

When writing about music use the following style guidelines (taken from the Chicago Manual of Style):
Titles of operas, oratorios, motets, tone poems, albums, large scale program music, and other long musical works are italicized. (e.g. Pictures at an Exhibition and Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band)
Titles consisting of generic terms are capitalized but not italicized or put in quotation marks. (e.g. Chopin’s Waltz in C-sharp Minor)
Spell out note names (e.g. A-flat, F-sharp; not Ab or F#)
Movement titles are generally capitalized. Individual movements from larger works take quotation marks. (e.g. “Mars” from The Planets).
Songs or individual pieces by a composer, band, or artist are given quotation marks. (e.g. “Hold Up” by Beyoncé, “The Elf King” by Franz Schubert).

    Content and Points
    5 points – Introduction:
Briefly identify the concert. Answer the following prompts:
    Who performed?
What pieces were performed? You don’t need to list all pieces. But do list the title and composer for all pieces that you will analyze in your report.
    Where was it performed?
Briefly describe the performance space, the physical surroundings, the appearance of the performers and the audience?
15 points – Objective description of the music (focusing on 2-3 pieces – at least one piece from beginning and one piece at the end of the program) accurately using at least five of the bolded terms from our textbook.
Consider elements such as rhythm, pitch, harmony, melody, texture, timbre, articulation, dynamics, and form.
Each of the essential terms you use should be formatted in bold.
You must describe the musical elements in detail. It is not enough to write, “This piece had rhythm,” or “This selection has harmony.”
Describe a specific musical moment – what makes it remarkable?
Think of using one sentence to identify the musical element and one sentence to describe how it was used.
You are encouraged to use more than five essential terms.
10 points – Subjective description of the music (focused specifically on 2-3 pieces).
    Questions to answer:
How did the music make you feel? What emotions did it evoke?
Why did you react the way that you did?
Were you emotionally responding to the composition or the performance or both?
What happened in the music to make you feel the emotions that you identified? Be as specific as possible.
    5 points – Conclusion
Sum up your experience of the concert.
    Questions to answer:
Was the experience new to you?
How was it different from what you expected?
    What held your attention?
Was it like or unlike other concerts you may have attended?
Were there any surprises at the concert?
Would you go again if it weren’t a requirement?
