  • Title: Applying Sociology to Understanding Crime and Offenders

    Overview
In this assignment, you will choose and define a crime, describe the type and classification of offender who commits this type of crime, and describe how aspects of sociology can be applied to the offender and the crime committed.
    Prompt
In Module One, you learned about types of crime, as well as types and classifications of offenders. In this module, you learned how aspects of sociology can be used to understand crime and explain what factors may lead to crime. You will now apply this knowledge to describe a crime, the offender, and how sociology may relate to the crime being committed. This application of knowledge will help you prepare for the submission of Project One in Module Five.
First, review the Project One Guidelines and Rubric.
Choose one crime from this list of crimes that are present in the Project One scenario:
    Organized crime
    Motor vehicle theft
    Selling/distributing narcotics
    Selling illegal weapons
    Murder
    Theft
    Dog fighting
    Burglary
    Illegal gambling
Identify the crime type for the crime you chose.
What is the crime type as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)?
Describe which classifications of offenders might commit this type of crime.
Which classification would the offender most likely match?
Why (or how) might more than one classification be a possibility?
Describe how this type of crime may be explained by aspects of sociology.
How might this type of crime be connected to sociological theories (e.g. routine activity theory, social disorganization theory, or structural strain theory)?
Specifically, the following rubric criteria must be addressed:
    Identify the type of crime.
Describe which classifications of offenders might commit this type of crime.
Describe how this type of crime may be explained by aspects of sociology.
    What to Submit
This assignment should be 200–300 words in length. Any references must be cited in APA style.

  • Title: “Uncovering the Lessons of Tragedy: An Analysis of Erik Larson’s Isaac’s Storm”

    Isaac’s Storm Monograph Analysis
In a well-written and thoughtful essay, answer the following six questions concerning the monograph, Isaac’s Storm, by Erik Larson.
To do well on this essay you must fully answer all of the questions in an essay form. Please do not simply write the question’s number and the answer. Make it an essay.
Important: you must cite specific information in the book that corresponds to your points. A simple parenthesis with a page number is fine for citation, e.g. (175).
Finally, the only material you can reference is the book itself. Please do not use outside sources or summaries. That would do more harm than good since it would be plagiarism. Plagiarism is bad- as in failing the entire class bad.
    Questions to answer:
Why did Larson write this book? What was the main point he was trying to get across? Was he effective in convincing you about his point? There is more to this book than simply telling the story of the Galveston hurricane.
Besides Mother Nature, of course, who or what do you think was most at fault for the tragedy in Galveston? Was such a large loss of life preventable? How do the ideas of the late Gilded Age and the “certainty” of technology play into the disaster? Give specific examples from the book with citation..
Which story or vignette (short account or story) of the hurricane did you find most intriguing, engaging, or perhaps terrifying? Explain what happened with citation. Why did Joseph and Isaac become estranged after the storm? Back this up with details from the book.
Besides just being a history of a tragedy, what can be learned from Isaac’s Storm? Is there a lesson or at least a warning in the book? Back this up with example and citation.
Finally, in a concluding paragraph, briefly write what you thought of the book. Did you like or dislike it? What worked and what did not? Be honest here. I like to get feedback to decide if I will continue to use the book in the future.
    Format and Grading:
There is no min or max page length. However, these are large questions. Most good essays will fall between 4 – 5 full pages.
    Double-spaced
Only submit a .doc, .docx, or a .pdf
In-text citation (do not just give a Works Cited)
Just use the page number of the book for the in-text citation.
12pt Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial
Much of your grade comes from how well you use specific examples in the book. You really need to show throughout the essay that you read and understood the book.
Make sure to fully answer all five questions.
The essay, by itself, is worth 150 points. The remainder of your score comes from the points earned on your four monograph quizzes.

  • Title: Rethinking Urban Design: A Case Study of E University Blvd in Tucson, AZ

    READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS:
Peter Calthorpe said that building new cities will be at the heart of so much that matters, from climate change to economic vitality to our well-being and sense of connectedness. However, we are not proposing to build new cities and expand our new footprint; instead, we are rethinking, re-building, and revitalizing them for good. The community design he proposes focuses on human interaction. He shares seven universal principles for solving sprawl and building smarter, more sustainable cities.
    1 — Preserve
    2 — Mix
    3 — Walk
    4 — Bike
    5 — Connect
    6 — Ride
    7 — Focus
For this project, you will complete an observational research study combining your on-site experience with mapping using your phone or computer.
Watch the TED talk by Peter Calthorpe.
Place yourself in a neighborhood that is at least 50% residential. Do not use a highly commercial location, campus, or mall; it must be at least 50% housing of any income level.
Give yourself ample time, at least 30 minutes, to explore the surroundings. Having the 7 principles for building better cities in mind, take pictures or record a video pointing out opportunities to rethink this neighborhood better. Make sure we see you in the pictures or hear you in the video.
Help yourself by using your cellphone maps app to see how the neighborhood connects to other neighborhoods, transportation systems, open spaces, and major destinations such as Downtown, jobs, services, and schools. You can also use your computer for this part.
For your deliverable, you will use a graphic design-based software program to create a presentation that includes the following slides:
Slide 1: A title slide that includes the name, location, and picture of yourself located at your chosen public space (selfie).
Slide 2-4 Undergraduate students: select three principles from the list above while
For each principle (slide), show and explain the option that applies from the list below:
The principle is met: explain how using at least 100 words and at least 2 images (1 picture and 1 map).
The principle is almost met: explain what is happening and what you recommend to do to completely meet the principle using at least 100 words and at least 2 images (1 picture and 1 map).
The principle is not met: What prevents it from being met? And how can it be fixed? Use at least 100 words and at least 2 images (1 picture and 1 map).
Slide 5(undergraduates) or 9 (Graduates): Ask your classmates a question, for example, what principle seems to be more urgent or more obvious in my case? or what other principle can easily be addressed… You will need to supply some context. Make sure you give them the necessary background to provide you with the answer. (These questions will be answered during Week 6)
For this presentation you will be discussing 2 — Mix,
    3 — Walk,
    & 5 — Connect.
The area I walked and observed I will be providing pitcures of both apple maps and pictures on site to be used along side your slide content.
Location: E University Blvd Tucson, AZ 85705
I am providing you with the photos neccissary for the slides and they are         numbered accordingly to the slides they belong on.
I am also providing you with an example slide show you can use as a guide.
