  • “Reflections on Race, Ethnicity, and Incorporation: Closing Lecture Remarks from ‘A Different Shore’” “Exploring the Impact of Xenophobia and Racialization in American History”

    From A Different Shore
    Closing Lecture Remarks
So far in this unit you have learned about key concepts and theories on race and ethnic relations to historical events and current events that affect society through the lens of Asian Americans and their incorporation into American history. We looked at how the categories of race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, sexuality, and citizenship influenced the first period of migration across the Pacific, as well is its parasitical lingerings in the American imaginary.
Understanding the influence and contribution of Asian Americans is key to unlocking a part of U.S. history. The influence of Asian American cultures, largely interpreted through racism, effects our everyday lives and not just the historical past through ideologies of yellow peril, model minority, and Islamophobia. Even so, this does not limit the role and impact of Asian Americans as individuals and as a group who gives back to this nation.
So much of our own circumstances are engrained in social inequalities produced by capitalism. Mode of incorporation explains, for example, how people join new societies without improving their status vis-a-vis inequality. If someone from another country has a better class status due to inequality in their home society, they are likely as immigrants to the U.S. preserve their social status. In the same scenario, someone from another country who is at the bottom of social inequality is likely to be incorporated into the U.S. as an immigrant with low social status. This transfer of social status when someone immigrates is referred to by sociologists as the “mode of incorporation.” Your status in gender, race, class, and sexuality in your home society is likely to remain the same in U.S. society when you first immigrate.
Power and privilege operate in society individually and systemically, through the categories of race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, sexuality, and citizenship. Depending on the nation of origin, social class, educational attainment, gender and sexuality, as well as phenotype (“skin color”), the Asian immigrant experience in the U.S. is diverse and broad; and not as intelligent, submissive or passive, successful, or otherwise perceived by the White Spatial Imagination. Perpetuating the myth of the “Model Minority” is not social science nor objective. Instead, it is a form of xenophobia by the dominant group powerful to enforce strong cultural views toward racialized groups and individuals who are irrationally distrusted or feared. Now is your opportunity to demonstrate your ability to utilize course concepts and incorporate case studies in producing knowledge through cultural criticism in writing.

    Overview and Criteria
Post by Thursday, Reply by Saturday
The three (3) steps to complete this assignment are explained below in more detail, but here they are in a nutshell:
Answer at least 2 question(s) or prompts.
Incorporate at least 2 course concepts in your discussion.
    Leave 2 substantive/expansive comments.
There are two (2) dimensions that add up to the total points possible from this assignment.
Possible 25 Points = Your Post (Due Thursday)
Possible 10 Points = 2+ Comments (Due Saturday)
You’ll be graded on your ability to utilize course concepts to critically reflect on the unit’s lecture material. You must closely follow guidelines to earn maximum points.
    ⚠️ Post Submissions
I only grade the first post left by each student. If you submit a second post, it will not be graded. I only grade the first attempt. All other attempts after the first post will be ignored and ungraded. Recommendation:Work on your post outside of Canvas and don’t submit it until it meets your standards for submission.
    25 Points: Post Guidelines
Your post should be no less than 400 words in length. Your post is worth up to 25 points. It should contain:
4 pt: proper grammar. free of spelling errors, meets min. word count,
4 pt: use proper in-text citations, 6 pt: apply course concepts,
    6 pt: incorporate reading and/or lecture(s) material,
5 pt: directly address all aspects of the prompt(s).
    10 Points: Peer Comments
Each comment you leave is worth up to 5 points (depending on quality of post). Being nice and respectful is important, but it doesn’t get you all the points. Your comments need to be substantive and expand on the conversation or original post in a meaningful way. Comments should contain at least one of the following:
Comments should provide new information about the original post (“substantive”).
Elaborate on a point made by the Poster or someone else on the thread (“expand”).
In other words, compliments and salutations do not count as satisfactory comments. Pro Tips
What mistake will cost you the most points?
Use of in-text citations for all prompts is required. Every student should develop the habit of attributing information to sources in college-level writing. You can use either APAor MLA style for in-text citations. An example of citing the book in your text is as follows: (Takaki 2008, p.33). An example of citing lectures in your text is as follows: (Fuentes, “Unit #: Name of Lecture.”). Both the green number and lecture title must be changed to the appropriate source for credit.
Don’t want to lose your work?
Copy and paste your posts on Canvas, but write them elsewhere (Word, Google, etc.). Canvas logs users out with inactivity. If this happens, you aren’t alerted and your work will be lost even if you try to “save” or hit “submit.”

    Continuing the Conversation
You have a voice; what’s your say?
Guidance: Select course concepts (2+) introduced in this unit to answer two (2) or more of the below question(s) or prompts according Dr. Fuentes’ lecture materials or Dr. Takaki’s A Different Mirror (2008). You can also incorporate your own personal experiences or recent events, but there has to be a clear connection to concepts and case studies.*
What are ways that xenophobia and “yellow peril” affect our understanding of American History?
Discuss Chinese immigration during California’s Gold Rush (Ch. 8).
How is the “Model Minority” or “Islamophobia” normalized and accepted in society?

From your own lived experience, what is another example of xenophobia or racialization?
Discuss the American (ethnic) dilemma of WWII (Ch. 14).
Add your own link to an ig post, tweet, or tik tok and explain how it is an example of White Spatial Imaginary or ethnocentrism; OR Write your own question and incorporate course concepts to explain the importance behind your question (and the value of the potential answer).
*No external sources. Base your response on the lecture materials provided and, as an add-on, you can tie in your own personal experiences, stories, and examples.

  • The Sociological Imagination: Exploring the Intersections of Personal Experience and Social History “My Sociological Autobiography: Understanding My Life Through a Sociological Lens” “Making Sense of My Life through Sociological Perspectives: A Personal Reflection”

For this assignment, you will analyze your lived experiences by applying the sociological imagination.  Your task will be to place aspects of your life within social context.  This will require an in-depth examination of how both time and place have been influential in shaping your life. The goal is to make a connection between your biography (personal experience) and social history (larger movements and patterns in society).
    Here are some important details:
Page Requirements:  Papers should be at least5 full pages, not including the title and Works Cited page.  Please make it double-spaced, use 12 font, and have 1” margins.
Subheadings: Please organize your paper according to the four sections below, and use subheadings to clearly label each section.  Your subheadings can be titled exactly as the sections are titled.  For example, section one can be titled “Section 1: Society and Culture” and section two should be titled “Section 2: Social Inequalities,” and so forth.
Concepts: Throughout the paper, you will be applying theoretical perspectives, concepts, and theories from the book.  Please put these theoretical perspectives, concepts, and theories in bold text like this the first time you mention them.  You only need to do this the first time, not every time you use them.
Strive for an A grade:  I’m hoping you’re all aiming for an A+ so here are some tips!  Wherever the directions say “at least,” it means that you may go beyond this if you are striving for a high A grade.
In-text Citations:  You will need to cite the book within your paragraphs to show where you are getting the explanations/definitions of the concepts you’re discussing.  Either MLA or APA format will be fine for your in-text citations.  You should use the author’s last name and page/section number.  It should look something like this at the end of your sentences (Henslin 35). If you are citing the mini lecture videos, you can use my last name with the name of the video, and the year.  It can look like this (Jovel Mini Lecture Video: Culture, 2022).
    * I highly recommend watching my mini-lecture videos.  I give you questions to help you with the paper.
Works Cited or Reference Page: You should have a Works Cited or Reference page at the end of your paper that includes the textbook and class lectures you used.  Since you shouldn’t be using any other source besides the textbook and lectures, that means this is all you need in your  Works Cited/Reference page at the end of your paper.  Below is the MLA format of the textbook that you may copy and paste into your Works Cited/Reference page at the end of your paper, as well as the format to use for the class lectures.
Henslin, J. M. Essentials of Sociology: A Down to Earth Approach 13th Ed. Boston: Pearson, 2019.
Jovel, Jennifer. “Include Mini Lecture Video Title Here.” Sociology 101, Include Semester and Year Here, Ohlone College, Lecture.
Plagiarism and AI: Papers will be turned in on Canvas which uses Turn-It-In to check for plagiarism.  All papers will be checked for plagiarism in order to be graded.  I urge you not to post your paper or look-up other papers online.  Websites that market themselves as “study resources” contribute to plagiarism which is considered academic dishonesty .  It simply is not worth using ANY outside resources, including AI tools that generate text, for assistance or “inspiration.”  All you need is the textbook and lecture notes.  This paper is not worth jeopardizing your integrity and academic future.  I am more than happy to help you if you feel stuck or overwhelmed.  I truly believe you already have what it takes to write a good paper.  Don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you feel like you need more guidance.  I’m here for you!
Writing Support:  Ohlone College offers free English tutoring both in-person at the English Learning Center  (room 3509 Fremont campus) and also online (via Canvas through TechConnectZoom).  They can help read over your paper and strengthen your writing.  You can also get writing support through NetTutor (24/7 online tutoring via Canvas).  You can easily join the online tutoring by using the NetTutor link on our Canvas menu bar.
Example Paper:  Here is an example paper to help you.  The format may be a bit different since it’s an older paper from an in-person class, but it will give you a good idea of what a Sociological Autobiography looks like.
Here are the sections you will need to include in your paper:
    Introduction
Provide an overview of who you are, including your social location, historical, and/or cultural factors influential in shaping your experiences. Also introduce the major sociological topics you will be analyzing in your paper.  Remember, this section does not need a subheading.
    Section 1: Society and Culture
Decide on at least 1 sociological topic you want to focus on from part 1 of the class. The topics covered in part 1 include culture, socialization, social structure and social interactions, groups and organizations, and deviance.  For the topic(s) you cover, you will want to:
Discuss events from your life that are related to the sociological topic(s) you have chosen. For example, if you choose culture, you will provide a description of the culture you grew up in and/or the culture you are currently exposed to.
Apply specific sociological terms, concepts, and/or theories related to your lived experiences. For example, if you are examining culture, you will want to apply concepts such as symbolic culture and material culture and give a breakdown of each in your discussion.  Remember, you must use sociological language.  Be sure to reference the textbook and provide explanations of the concepts you are discussing (cite the book).  The use of sociological terms is necessary for making your work different than the typical autobiography.  Although I’m sure your life is very interesting, I do not want your life story without the use of the sociological imagination.
    Section 2: Social Inequalities
Decide on at least 1 form of social inequality you want to focus on from part 2 of the class. The topics covered in part 2 include global stratification, social class, race and ethnicity, gender, and age.  For the topic(s) you cover, you will want to:
Discuss events from your life that are related to the sociological topic(s) you have chosen. Examine the impact that your social location has had on your experiences.
Apply specific sociological terms, concepts, and/or theories related to your lived experiences. Remember, you must use sociological language. Be sure to reference the textbook and/or class notes and provide explanations of the concepts you are discussing (cite the book).  The use of sociological terms is necessary for making your work different than the typical autobiography.  Although I’m sure your life is very interesting, I do not want your life story without the use of the sociological imagination.
    Section 3: Social Institutions
Decide on at least 1 social institution you want to focus on from part 3 of the class. The topics covered in part 3 include family, education, religion, and the economy.  For the topic(s) you cover, you will want to:
Discuss events from your life that are related to the sociological topic(s) you have chosen. For example, if you choose education as one of your major topics, you will provide a description of your own personal experiences related to education and the significant educational events that have occurred in your life.
Provide a comparison of your experience within this institution to the experiences that those from other groups, societies, or social locations. In other words, examine the impact that your social location has had on your experiences within this social institution.
Apply specific sociological terms, concepts, and/or theories related to your lived experiences. Remember, you must use sociological language. Be sure to reference the textbook and provide explanations of the concepts you are discussing (cite the book).  For example, if you are analyzing the topic of education you may examine the significance of labeling theory, and apply concepts like tracking and the hidden curriculum. The use of sociological terms is necessary for making your work different than the typical autobiography.
    Section 4: Theoretical Perspectives
Describe which theoretical perspective(s) most guided your analysis in this paper.  Explain if symbolic interactionism, functionalism, and/or conflict theory is most helpful to you when you examine your life experiences.  Be sure to reference the book when providing a description of the perspective(s) (cite the book), and provide and explanation of how/why this perspective(s) was useful when examining your life experiences.
    Conclusion
Discuss how the personal events in your life are connected to larger social forces from the past or present. For example, how are your personal experiences as a college student connected to the current state of higher education and the economy in our state/country?  How are your own personal experiences connected to the experiences of others?  Your conclusion should provide a reflection of the insight you have gained from this assignment.

What kind of programs can be improved apon to encourage mental health wellness checks……..
Is the problem encapsulated in a single question?
Is it clear that this problem can be approached through social science research (instead of theoretical or speculative reasoning or natural science methodology)?
What biases do you have as you study this problem? This is important to consider because you will need to continually examine your questions and methods for bias throughout the semester.
If you were going to study this problem for real, could it be accomplished with reasonable expenditure of time and money?

Thanks in advance for taking this assignment.

  • Title: “Challenging Conventions of Ghostly Absence: Genre, Cinematography, and Sound in Jennifer Kent’s ‘The Babadook’”

I already started this assignment so please utilize what I have already given in the files and build off from there.
From Column A I chose Genre and from Column B I chose cinematography and Sound.
This is my thesis: This essay delves into how Jennifer Kent’s “The Babadook,” an innovative portrayal of ghosts in contemporary horror cinema, and through its use of genre, cinematography, and sound, challenges established conventions of ghostly absence by depicting them as corporeal, messy, and undeniably present. This departure from traditional representations serves as a powerful metaphor for the tangible reality of mental afflictions such as depression and grief, urging viewers to reconsider their perceptions of reality and the narratives used to navigate psychological struggles.
For this assignment, you will submit an original and engaging essay that addresses one or two films in the course’s filmography. These films must have been screened in class or in discussion sections, and at least one of them must be a feature film. If you are only writing about one film, it must not be the same one you wrote about for your scene analysis paper.
In your paper, you must address one element from Column A and one or two elements from Column B:
    Column A (choose 1)
    Column B (choose 1 or 2)
    Style
    Mise-en-scène
    Narrative
    Cinematography
    Genre
    Editing
    Documentary
    Sound
    Experimental
You should develop your own argument drawing from the course readings, screenings, and lectures. This argument should be supported by close readings and analysis of specific scenes of the film(s) under consideration. It will be wise to address these two requirements in your argument and develop them at length in your analysis.
Your essay must have a clear thesis statement in the introduction and use an appropriate citation style (we recommend MLA, Chicago, or Turabian). Refrain from making judgments of value. We don’t need to know whether you like the film, the director, the performer, or the scene. Make an argument you can sustain throughout the paper and stick to it.
You should cite (and engage with) at least one academic source that is not your textbook (and not Wikipedia).
    Summary of Requirements
    Title
Introduction paragraph with your thesis statement
Focus on one element from Column A and one or two elements from Column B
    Use one external academic source
    Concluding paragraph
Full citation references (may be a Works Cited page, or footnotes, or Bibliography, depending on the citation style of your choosing; just be consistent and thorough).
    Format and Submission Instructions
Your paper should be written using 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, ranging from 4 to 6 pages.

  • Title: The Panopticon: Bentham’s Vision of Power and Control through Surveillance

Write a paper that answer ALL the following sub-questions:
    F
Explain Bentham’s idea of a “panopticon” building, and link aspects of the architecture to the core functions envisioned by Bentham. Make sure to explain how his plan supports: A) The asymmetry of an inspector “seeing without being seen” and B) The creation of a “feeling of being watched” in the inhabitants.
Bentham calls the panopticon an “engine” and says in the preface that it is “A new mode of obtaining power of mind over mind in a quantity hitherto without example”. How does this work? Explain how Bentham gets from surveillance (information) to power. Why is the panopticon seen as a machine of control?
Now explain Bentham’s purposes and how he argues that this building can bring safety, efficiency and morally “good” behavior to prisons & other institutions such as schools.
In the letter on schools Bentham also talks about how the panopticon can be used for experimentation. Describe & discuss this “laboratorium” function. How is this different from the core disciplinary function?
Discuss the pro’s & cons of the panopticon:
Can safety, efficiency & “good behavior” justify a panoptic surveillance “machine”? Discuss some specific worries one might have – refer to Bentham’s own list in letter 21.
Lastly compare the panoptic principle to contemporary forms of surveillance:
Do you think that we in some ways are living in a society-wide panopticon today? Be specific and explain why/why not/in which respects/what is different (make reference to Zuboff’s chapter & United States of secrets documentary)
    Assignment:
Think about the topic and read the assignment task very carefully.
Take notes. Brainstorm. What are you asked to do? Do you understand the text and the task? What are key points you what to make? What other sources do you need to read?
