“Expanding the Conversation: A Recommendation for a New Text in ENL-101”
The final assignment of Enl-101 is a review/recommendation essay where students recommend to their professor a new reading to include in Enl-101 the next time the professor teaches it. The students should explain what the new text offers in terms of learning about credibility, argument, and how it adds something new to the class’s semester-long conversation/topic. We will do drafts of this exercise to have the strongest possible final product.
To prepare for this exercise, we will first look at the world of reviewing and discuss how we can justify our tastes and argue for what we are passionate about. You are allowed to choose one of the authors from our anthology only if you a read an entire book by them, or you can choose something from anything that you love and want to argue for including. Remember this is a persuasive essay! We will enlarge our definition of text to include movies, podcasts, graphic novels, and multimedia presentations. You will need to incorporate both primary and secondary source research into this exercise (need a minimum of 5 sources). Remember we do not have a final exam in this class so this paper will be weighted very heavily. We will use the attached rubric for the paper which needs to be 4-5 pages long (not including cover page or bibliography) double spaced, or approximately 1500 words. -

Purpose
Writing a podcast script teaches you to write in a particular rhetorical situation and persuasively. Because podcasts are an increasingly popular genre for public consumption, you will become more informed of the genre and learn the conventions of writing for an audio format, appealing to an audience.

“How to Make Your Podcast Stand Out in a Crowded Market”Links to an external site. by Roberta Kwok
How to – Radio & Podcasting – RecordingLinks to an external site.
from Mediabox Online
Choose a Topic
For this assignment, you will develop a written script for a 3-5 minute podcast (about 450-650 words). Your podcast can be just you speaking alone, an interview with a friend or family member, a panel interview where you talk to 3 or 4 people, or even in play format with several characters. Choose one of these topics for your podcast.
Music Genre, Artist, or Album: Write a podcast script in which you will teach your audience about a specific music genre, artist, or album. Using the rhetorical devices, persuade your listeners that the genre, artist, album is noteworthy. (You may include musical examples, but if the music is copyrighted, you may not use more than a 30 second clip for educational purposes.)
Dream Job: Write a podcast script in which you will teach your audience about aspects of your dream job. For example, if you want to be a marine biologist, persuade your listeners that marine biology is an excellent career, using the rhetorical devices.
College Success Skills: Write a podcast script in which you will teach your audience about college success skills. Refer to the skills you learned in the last unit (avoiding procrastination and plagiarism, learning a new writing process to avoid writer’s block, developing time management skills). Using the rhetorical devices, persuade your listeners that these skills will promote future success.
Do Research
Find at least three (3) credible sources to include in your podcast.
Use the ENG 112 NOL Library GuideLinks to an external site. to help you choose and evaluate internet sources that are appropriate for your podcast. See the part about websites for search and evaluation tips. You may also choose to use the library databases or book collection to find sources.
Plan how your will incorporate and use these sources to support your ideas and to provide evidence. You will use quotations, statistics, and other salient information from these sources in your podcast.
Find 2-3 sound bites for your podcast. Choose non-copyrighted music or audio. You may use 30 seconds or less of copyrighted music for educational purposes. See these web pages for sound effects: PixabayLinks to an external site., SoundBibleLinks to an external site..
Draft a Script
Beginning: Begin the script with the title and date of the podcast. Introduce the topic and the speakers in an inviting and engaging way.
Main Points: State, support, and persuade your audience. Use sources from your research to support your opinions. Include a SPOKEN reference to the source within the sentence. (For more tips on incorporating quotes, see UNC’s webpage on QuotationsLinks to an external site..)
Ending: End with brief thoughtful comments to wrap up the show and remind the audience of your main claim. Thank your guest(s) for the interview and thank the audience for listening. Add a music or audio clip in your closing.
Format the Script
Format the text of your script like the one you looked at for the podcast “The Haunting Effects of Going Days Without Sleep.”Links to an external site.
Sources: Add a MLA formatted Works Cited page on a separate page at the end of your script. Include MLA formatted citations for all sources, including the sound bites.
Sound: Include 2-3 sound bites in the script. Indicate where each sound bite will be in the script. Use parentheses to show the sound location and include a description of the sound, for example (Sound bite of Applause).
Proofread: Re-read your script out loud to catch errors. Make corrections as you read. Time yourself to see if it is 3-5 minutes.
Submit the Script
Submit your written podcast script draft as a Word document or Google doc. (In a future assignment, you will record your podcast and submit an audio file.)
NOTE: Your script will be submitted to Turnitin, which is a method for submitting a written assignment to check for similarities to other texts on the internet. You are encouraged to read about how to interpret the Similarity report and understanding the Turnitin Similarity ReportLinks to an external site. to better understand how Turnitin is used.
This assignment requires you to use all of the skills you have been developing to create a podcast script that incorporates rhetorical appeals, follows a process for writing, and uses/cites sources properly.

Overview: Argument Research Paper
In previous assignments, you have read, viewed, researched and discussed materials related to your chosen topic. Now you will develop an 800 plus word argument research paper on your topic. Your essay will include a clear thesis and well developed key ideas with topic sentences and supporting examples. The essay will also follow the conventional organization of the three elements of introduction, body and conclusion.
Essay Development
