Cultural Humility in the Helping Profession: Understanding Personal Values and Unconscious Biases Strategies for Recognizing and Mitigating Unconscious Bias in Interactions with Others
Culturally competent helping professionals are encouraged to go beyond committing to increasing culturally specific knowledge and skills. While developing relevant skills and knowledge is essential to competent practice and can help mitigate biases, at times, unconscious biases can be tenacious and resistant to increases in cognitive knowledge. Cultural humility includes adopting attitudes and behaviors that can help to mitigate the impact of unconscious biases that can impede the helper’s ability to be effective with diverse clients. For this assignment, you will write a two- to three-page paper in which you apply knowledge gained from your readings and the completion of the assigned MindTap learning activities.
To successfully complete this assignment, organize your paper in the following manner using each of the section headings provided below in the parentheses in boldface.
Section 1 (Introduction)
Compose a one-paragraph introduction to your paper relevant to the main topic of cultural humility in the counseling or a related helping profession.
Section 2 (Ethical Concerns)
Based on the assigned readings, include a one-paragraph summary of ethical concerns associated with imposing helper values. Do an online search to identify the ethics code for a profession you are considering in the helping profession (e.g., American Counseling Association Code of Ethics, American Psychological Association Code of Ethics, American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Code of Ethics, Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts, National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics). If you are not considering a career in a helping profession, select any one of the ethics codes listed above. In your second paragraph, connect the ethical concerns you summarized in the first paragraph to specific content in the ethics code you selected. Include APA-formatted in-text citations and references from the assignment readings and the professional ethics code you selected.
Section 3 (Know Your Values)
Summarize what you learned from Chapter 3 Video Activity: Know Your Values and Chapter 3 Helper Studio: Know Your Values. Include the specific feedback you received on the video you uploaded into the Helper Studio. Based on the feedback received by participating in these activities, identity at least two specific professional or personal growth opportunities for you to improve your ability to work effectively with diverse clients. In this section of your paper, it is appropriate to use 1st person voice.
Section 4 (Cultural Tunnel Vision)
Summarize what you learned from Chapter 4 Case Study: Cultural Tunnel Vision and the Personal Social Background Interaction Profile. Based on any feedback received by participating in these activities, and information discussed in your textbook and other assigned readings, include any insights you gained about your personal worldview and how your perspectives and preferences might impact clients or other individuals you work with in a helper role. Based on the descriptions in the article, Loosening Categorical Thinking: Extending the Terrain of Theory and Research on Demographic Identities in Organization Download Loosening Categorical Thinking: Extending the Terrain of Theory and Research on Demographic Identities in Organizations, consider whether your identity is more consistent with a “normative” or one of the “nonnormative” categories. Discuss how your identity might impact your interactions with clients who identify differently. Connect your conclusions to the assigned reading and support your points with relevant information from the textbook and other scholarly sources including APA-formatted in-text citations and references. In this section of your paper, it is appropriate to use 1st person voice.
Section 5 (Conclusions)
Compose a one-paragraph conclusion. In your conclusion, summarize key points connecting concepts related to cultural humility with the topics of personal values and conscious and unconscious bias. Identify at least two strategies to which you can commit to recognize and mitigate the impact of unconscious bias in your interactions with others. In this section of your paper, it is appropriate to use 1st person voice.

Revision Plan for “Healing Spaces: Designing a Hospital for the Body and Soul” “The Healing Sanctuary: A Testament to Thoughtful Design in Healthcare”
PROMPT: How would you revise either Essay Project 1
or Project 2?
The
Revision Plan that you create must identify no less than THREE
proposed areas of global and/or local revision (see the required handout
for an explanation of global and local revision). When determining each area in
need of revision (global and local), students should take instructor feedback
on their original submissions into account.
However, students must also demonstrate that they understand that meaningful
revision requires more than treating the instructor’s comments as a checklist. The revision plan essay is not a casual
document. It should still have a main
idea, body paragraphs, and correct grammar and punctuation. You are writing a five-paragraph essay,
similar in structure to the other essays you have written this semester (intro,
thesis, topic sentences, conclusion, etc.).
You may write in first person.
Lastly, please remember to edit your revision plan essay.
*Each of the three proposed areas
of global and/or local revision must provide
the following 3 components:
•
Critical
Thought/Context: This component must describe the content area in need of
global or local revision.
Your description must demonstrate a clear understanding of your previous
submission’s shortcomings AND the ways in which those shortcomings
influenced your original essay.
•
Revision
Category: This
component must name AND justify the specific kind of revision required
in the content area and demonstrate your understanding of the type of revision to
be made.
•
Action
Plan: This
component must describe your intended process to successfully revise the
content area; it must include a multi-step plan of action that attends to more
than surface-level needs and includes your purpose.
Revision
allows students to understand and practice large-scale revision techniques,
often essential to any successful writing process. To learn more about three
specific types of revision and prepare to write about the revision process,
students must critically read Chapter 3 of their Rules
for Writers handbook and Donald
Murray’s “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscripts”
THis is the essay that needs to be revised:
Healing
Spaces: Designing a Hospital for the Body and Soul
Stepping
into the hospital, one is immediately enveloped by an aura of professionalism.
The pristine white walls, accented with soothing shades of orange echo the establishment’s
commitment to cleanliness and calm. Soft, diffused lighting casts a gentle
glow, warding odd the sterile harshness that one might expect. The air cries a
faint, clean scent, devoid of the anticipated medicinal pungency making each
breathe a subtle reassurance of care. Comfortable seating areas, adorned with
vibrant, life- affirming plants, offer solace and a space for reflection.
Artwork depicting tranquil landscapes and abstract forms of healing and hope adorns
the corridors, providing a visual balm to visitors and patients alike. The
staff with their warm smiles and quiet competence move with grace that belies
the urgency of their work. This hospital, a haven of healing, has been
thoughtfully designed to ease the mind and comfort the spirit, making it a
place where one can reflect fondly on compassionate care received.
Upon
this foundation of tranquility, the hospital’s design extends its embrace the
senses, ensuring that each patient’s experience is as comforting as possible.
The hallways, wide and uncluttered allow for easy navigation, instilling a
sense of independence and dignity in patients and visitors. The lighting
deliberately soft and warm, minimizes shadows and creates an environment that
feels safe and inviting. The choice of artwork is strategic, with pieces
selected not only for their aesthetic value but also for their ability to
inspire and uplift the human spirit. Each piece tells a story of hope,
resilience, and the beauty of life, serving as silent encouragers to those on
the path to recovery. The seating arrangements in waiting areas are designed to
foster a sense of community and support, allowing for shared moments of
connection and empathy. Even the plants, with their greenery contribute to a
sense of life and growth, symbolling the journey of healing that patients
embark upon. The staff’s attire, a bland of professionalism and approachability,
reinforces the hospital’s mission to provide care that is both expert and
compassionate. Every detail, from the scent in the air to the texture of the
fabrics is a testament to the hospital’s dedication to creating a healing sanctuary
that attends to the well-being of both body and soul.
In
this sanctuary of healing, the precise attention to detail continues beyond the
visual and spatial elements. The auditory experience is carefully curated to
prevent the cacophony of beeping machines and bustling corridors from overwhelming
the senses. Instead, the sound of soft instrumental music occasionally
permeates the spaces, offering a soothing backdrop to the rhythm of footsteps
and distant conversations. This auditory cushion helps to maintain the calm
atmosphere, ensuring that the environment remains conducive to healing and
relaxation. The hospital’s commitment to sensory comfort is also evident in the
texture of materials used throughout the facility. From the smoothness of the
handrails to the plushness of the chairs, every surface is selected with the patients’
physical comfort in mind. Providing a tactile reassurance that complements the
visual and auditory efforts to create a holistic healing experience.
Embracing
the full spectrum of human emotions within the hospital’s walls is a testament
to its comprehensive care approach. The presence of various emotions is not
only acknowledged but also celebrated as a positive aspect of the healing journey.
Joy is found in the laughter of a family receiving good news, the relief in a patient’s
sign as pain recedes, and the pride in staff members when their care leads to a
patient’s recovery. Anxiety and fear are met with the gentle touch of a staff member’s
hand and the reassuring words of a doctor, transforming the hospital into a
field of hope against uncertainty. Even in sorrow, there is a shared strength,
as compassionate diversity mirrors life’s complexities and reinforces that hospital’s
role as a nurturing environment that honors the full human experience.
In
conclusion, the hospital’s meticulous attention to detail in its design is a
testament to its philosophy of holistic healing. The environment is not just a
backdrop but an active participant in the journey to wellness. From the
carefully chosen color scheme to the strategic placement of art and greenery,
every element works in harmony to create a sanctuary for healing. IT stands as
a beacon of hope, a place where physical environment aligns with the dedicated
staff’s mission to nurture both the body and soul. This hospital is more than a
building. It is a testament to the power of thoughtful design in the healing
process. Providing peace and comfort to all who walk its halls. -
“Exploring Key Issues in Contemporary Business: An In-Depth Analysis”
Approach and requirements
The three essay questions are deliberately open to allow you the freedom to shape your analysis
and demonstrate the ability to focus in on key issues you find most important or interesting. You
should not cover everything! You need to provide focused, in-depth analysis, not broad
description or simply listing issues.
This means there is no single ‘correct’ answer or way to respond, and each question can be
approached in a variety of ways. The key is that you provide in-depth, focused responses to the
questions and that you do this using evidence to support your arguments.
Use of supporting evidence is essential in an academic assignment to add authority and credibility
to your arguments and to illustrate your discussion. You do this by referring to theories, concepts,
2
research findings and examples from academic literature and other credible sources to support or
illustrate the points you are making. This also enables you to show that you have studied the
recommended literature for the module and can use what you have read to construct reasoned
and well-evidenced arguments.
You should use a minimum of 15+ credible and relevant academic sources. It is a requirement
to use literature from the module reading list.
Better evidenced essays may use more academic sources, demonstrating further independent study. -
“Reflecting on a Semester of Growth: Lessons Learned from ‘How to be an Antiracist’ and ‘Born a Crime’”
BOOK#1 IS “How to be an antiracist” Ibram x Kendi . Book#2 is “Born a crime” by trevor Noah”
For your Final Self-Reflection Essay, you will need to consider all that you have experienced and accomplished throughout the semester in our course. Your write-up should discuss the texts, authors, ideas, people, events, research, films, Podcasts, art work, assignments, discussions with other students, or other class activities that you have engaged in or been exposed to during the semester that especially stand out for you in one way or another. You should select several high points to discuss, and/or anything you also found most challenging, and you should include specific quotes from your own work, as well as from our texts, and/or from the other sources you were exposed to, to help support and illustrate your commentary. You will also need to consider what skills or knowledge or processes you gained in the class that you might be able to apply to future classes, or to your life outside of class.
You can consider some of these questions to help you in your refection: What books did you like best (or least), and why? What ideas resonated with you the most? Which ideas or facts (in our books or in your research, etc.) surprised you? What ideas or stories made the most impression on you–what lingers still today? Which assignments led you to accomplish the work you feel most proud of? Which assignments did you enjoy working on the most? What did you find most challenging about the course? What new skills, realizations, facts, or thought-processes might be of use to you moving forward?
Your write-up should include:
At least three examples of books, authors, ideas, films, Podcasts, research, art work, assignments, student discussions, or other experiences in the course that had the most significant impact on you this semester.
At least three quotes from either Kendi or Book #2 (or from one of the other sources you wrote about or were exposed to; at least one for each of the three minimum examples).
At least three excerpts from your own writing (your own ideas and words, from your Assignments; at least one for each of the three minimum examples). **When quoting yourself, you can indicate the Assignment number in the lead-in phrase, i.e.: As I wrote in Assignment #5, “your words would go here.” You don’t need citations for these–just include a lead-in phrase.
At least one example of a skill, an awareness, a process, or a new piece of knowledge that you can foresee possibly having use for in the future (either as something you will be able to apply to your work in other classes, or in your personal life, or to your career or work life).
**You may submit the Final Self-Reflection Essay once all your Assignments and Discussions have been submitted.
(Approx. 450-500 words; more is fine.)
