The professor wrote this down as the guide for this paper.
“4-5 Pages, Double Spaced, Times New Roman
For your final paper, write a research- driven essay on any text or film you choose. You must
include two secondary sources and one primary source, but you must pose your own argument/
interpretation of whatever you choose. You must choose a different text than your previous
essays, but it can be a poem, short story, film, or play. Your thesis can respond to one of your
secondary sources. A successful essay will include:
-A clear introduction that includes a thesis statement. Your intro should be no more than half a
page. You can pose an interpretive or argumentative thesis (without referring to a primary
source).
-Cohesive paragraphs that provide effective support and analysis of your thesis.
-Clear analysis/ close reading of particular scenes or passages. Your analysis should clearly
support your thesis. Include textual analysis in every paragraph.
-Quotes that are fully elaborated and clearly relate to your interpretation.
-Effective integration of your secondary sources.
-A strong conclusion.”
I prefer that you write about “speech sounds” by Octavia E. Butler and about the theme of femininity throughout the story, but if you are familiar with a movie that you want to write about, just let me know first and I will get back to you. Thank you!

“Exploring Modern Perspectives on Gender, Class, Nationalism, and Heroism through the Lens of the Middle Ages in Film”
Directions. I ask that you write a six to eight page paper (approximately 1500-2000 words) on one of the following prompts. This paper is not intended to be based in significant external research, though you may decide to tackle a prompt which has you seek out more films than we have watched in class. (You may continue to treat lecture as universally-known background material.) If you have an idea for a paper topic that is different from those listed below, please email me, and we’ll work out a prompt together for your use.
Content and formatting: The particulars of writing your papers – including analytic content and organization, citation style, and page and file formatting – should follow the instructions in the Course Writing Manual. Papers which do not adhere to those standards will face deductions.
Some Food for Thought: There’s a lot of room to explore in each of these prompts. Take the time to refine your thesis before you jump in! That creative, reflective work is critical, and if you do it well, it makes your job as writer a lot easier. Think on the prompts, revisit the texts, and be sure of your thesis and the two or three major arguments you wish to make before you begin your writing work.
Prompt Options:
Tracing a theme. Pick at least three films, and trace the way that modern filmmakers have made use of the Middle Ages and its history to discuss or express ideas about gender ideals and gender relations; class and class relationships; nationalist or colonial identity; heroic ideals -

“Enhancing Research Skills: A Scholarly Review of Two Peer Reviewed Journal Articles”
Journal article reviews are assignments provided by professors to assist students in enhancing their research skills, locating primary/reliable sources, and extracting relevant information from these sources. Becoming proficient in locating peer reviewed journal articles and reviewing these sources for relevant information/data will be extremely helpful when writing research papers, signature assignments, or other assigned written assignments. Scholarly reviews of peer reviewed journal articles can be standalone assignments or part of a larger research paper. For this course, you will review two peer reviewed journal articles and complete a double spaced, two-page scholarly review of the articles. You will the find the peer reviewed journal articles located in Week One and Week Two for the scholarly reviews. These sources and information located through the scholarly reviews can be incorporated with your signature assignment or other written assignments for this course. Instructions: 1) Read the peer reviewed articles from the beginning to the end. There will be sections of interest to extract the information needed. These sections are: Abstract, Introduction, Methodology, Findings, Conclusion, and Recommendations. Gaining a better understanding of the text may require for you to read the article in full, or portions of the article, more than once. 2) The scholarly journal review will need to contain a paragraph or two, summarizing each of the following: • What was the purpose of the article? • What was the study about? • How was the research conducted? • What were the findings of the research? • Summarize the conclusion provided by the author(s). • What were the recommendations provided by the author(s) for future studies? The scholarly journal review will require a cover and reference page, which are not part of your two-page assignments. You need to correctly cite your source. Your assignment must be formatted according to APA Style guidelines.
