  • The Impact of New Discoveries and Inventions on the World: A Response to “The First Industrial Revolution”

Summary and Response Essay THIS WILL BE A 5-6 PARAGRAPH ESSAY. Your essay will be based on Skills Unit 7 Reading 1 The First Industrial Revolution pages 193-195 OR Reading 2 Glass is Humankind’s Most Important Material pages 202-204. You must decide which reading you will use for this essay. Read it thoroughly several times and take notes on it before you begin your essay.
Introductory Paragraph-Create an introductory paragraph that catches the reader’s attention based on the reading’s overall main idea. You may want to introduce the idea in the unit question: How do new discoveries and inventions change the world? This paragraph should include the name of the article you have chosen and the author’s name. Become more specific in this paragraph and lead your reader to your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should include, in either a direct or an indirect way, the main ideas of the article that you will discuss in your response paragraphs.
First Body Paragraph: Summary Summarize your reading. If you need to make your summary more than one paragraph, you can make it your first two body paragraphs. Be sure to use good summarizing techniques:
    Do not add your opinion.
Only discuss main ideas. While you must include most of the main ideas of the article, do not forget to also include the 2 main ideas that you will respond to in your other body paragraphs.
Write the summary using the same organization and discuss main ideas in the same order as the reading.
Paraphrase ideas and use your OWN WORDS. A short quote is acceptable.
Make the summary much shorter than the original. As mentioned above, it can be only 1-2 paragraphs.
Second and Third Body Paragraphs: Response Paragraphs (or third and fourth body paragraphs if your summary is 2 paragraphs). Each body paragraph should be at least 8 sentences.
Choose two of the main ideas from your summary. Write about one in each of your 2 response paragraphs.
Your topic sentence for each paragraph can mention that the main idea is one pointoned above in topic sentences should be short and to the
in the supporting detal for each paragrapn, you shoud have a more detaile
    discussion of the main idea.
Your response to the main idea should include giving your opinions or personal reactions to the main idea. You can do this WITHOUT saying “I think” or “I believe”. Simply write what it is you believe or think as the authority.
Discuss the main idea in relation to the unit question: How do new discoveries and inventions change the world?
You may want to include the reason you chose to discuss this particular main idea. Is it more important or interesting than the others? Do you have stronger feelings about it?
    Why?
Concluding paragraph Start with a concluding transition. Be sure to leave your readers with some concluding thoughts to think about.

  • Title: Developing an Effective Anti-Fraud Program for Organizations

A typical organization loses a certain percentage of annual revenue to fraud. The potential for fraud occurs in all organizations, regardless of the industry in which it operates, financial structure, or size. Every organization is vulnerable to fraud. The risk of fraud should be reduced as much as possible to improve the longevity of the organization. Hence, preventing, deterring, and detecting fraud are crucial to the success of organizations. Deterring and preventing fraud can be more economical than detecting, investigating, and recovering from fraud after the fact. These anti-fraud measures must start at the top and must be communicated throughout the organization. They must go beyond internal controls yet consider the cost-benefit.
Develop an anti-fraud program, or model, that can be implemented in any organization. In other words, don’t apply the model to a specific organization. The model, if applied correctly, must be efficient in preventing, detecting and deterring fraud. At minimum, your model must address the following factors:
    Fraud risk assessment
    Employees’ Code of Conduct
Policies and procedures to prevent, deter, and detect fraud
Technical tools to prevent, deter, and detect fraud (i.e. SQL, ODBC, Digital Analysis, etc.)
    Cost-benefit analysis

The Portfolio Project preliminary deliverables are as follows:
Week 4: Submit a one-page outline of your paper, including references that demonstrates your initial research of components of a real-world anti-fraud program/model for approval by your instructor.
Week 6: Submit the proposed final references section for your project.
Part 1: Requirements for the paper:
Demonstrate your comprehension of the course material.
    Use professional business language.
10-12 pages in length (double-spaced), not including the cover and reference pages. Supporting documents (i.e. charts, graphics, etc.) should be included as addendums to your report and not in the body of the report.

  • Title: Analyzing Crime News Stories: A Highlighted Perspective

Find and select three written news stories about crimes
that occurred from three cities in the United States. Look for detailed print news stories
from newspapers, news agencies, or social news sources that focus on the same type of
crime, e.g., murder, robbery, assault, etc. Each story should report a separate crime
incident. If you access online, try to .pdf the news stories and include them as an
attachment. You might need to copy and paste. If you use hard copy newspapers, copy
and fasten each news story to 8.5 by 11-inch paper and create a .pdf. Using yellow
highlighter, or multiple highlighter colors if you choose, identify the key information
about the crimes reported in each story (you can do this electronically if you choose).
You should carefully highlight what you see as the important information. Stepping
back, how do you see the news stories being constructed for the reader? What are the
common forms of information reported in all the stories? What is reported in one or
some stories, but not all? What kind of words are used to describe the crimes that
occurred? Be sure to put words you note in “quotes.” What kind of information do you
think is missing that the public ought to know? Is there any information in any story that
potentially “grabs” the reader, also any information that might be confusing or
misleading? Next, drawing from class materials and/or the assigned reading, select and
apply two theories that you think might explain why the type of crime found in the news
stories you selected occurs. Mere mention or listing of the theories is insufficient. You
must provide a one paragraph coherent discussion of each theory and the argument about
what drives crime for each. Precision and detail are important here. You should be
able to find public domain news stories. You are not expected to pay for access to
newspapers. Please Note: If you are unable to attach the news stories to your write-up
because of technology, then just provide the links to the stories you used. I need to be
able to see the news stories and the highlighting you did if possible. Please provide a
footnote explanation at the end of the writeup about the problems in this respect you
    encountered.

  • Title: Creating Your Ethical Decision-Making Toolkit: Representing Your Default Mode and Its Relationships

Clients come to professionals because they need professional expertise; they don’t have it themselves. They will depend on you in the most important areas of their lives, such as money, health, education, and safety, and you will be responsible for the decisions you make. That’s why, throughout this course, you will be creating an ethical decision-making toolkit that you can use throughout your professional career. Creating a toolkit now means having a plan in place for the times when tough decisions must be made.
You’ll build your toolkit in a guided, step-by-step manner, using Microsoft’s SmartArt or a comparable tool. Visualization is creative and inspiring, and it has the advantage of capturing complexity in a relatively simple form that you can quickly consult as needed. By completing these Evolve activities over the next several weeks, you will equip yourself with a visual representation of ethical decision-making that is personally useful to you and faithfully represents your values, standards, and inclinations. You will create your own guide to making ethical decisions, reliably and with confidence, no matter how challenging they may be.
In this module, you have discovered your default mode of ethical reasoning and explored its relationship to other default modes. Now you’ll begin to create your visual toolkit by representing these default modes and what they mean to you. In the next module you’ll add to it, and over the next six weeks you’ll continue to bring in new elements until you have a fully-realized visual representation of your toolkit. At the end, you’ll reflect on the process.

Activity Instructions We recommend Microsoft’s SmartArt. It is easy to learn and easy to use.  Watch a short tutorial on creating and changing SmartArtLinks to an external site.. You are also encouraged to use any other graphic design tools to create charts or infographics for this type of activity in the future. Please export your graphic as an image.
TaskUse SmartArt to depict what you learned this week about your default mode, and how it relates to the other two (principles/duties, consequences, virtues). Model the relationships that you see between the three modes, and/or their relationship to you, in a way that feels right to you. Don’t get overwhelmed by the number of templates. Keep your image simple, because it’s just a working document. You will play with it throughout the course as you pick up more tools and learn how they will work best.
Once you are satisfied with your model, post it to the discussion for this activity, and comment briefly on the following questions:
What did you learn about yourself in relationship to the ethical concepts that you tried to portray in your visual?
Why did you use a certain template, with certain shapes?
Why did you include certain parts and concepts?
