Students will develop a final project exploring a question/theme/text/issue of one’s choosing related to our course material. I selected Policy Brief for the format. The goal of this assignment is to clearly and effectively communicate a depth of engagement with the course material, and an understanding of the central concepts, debates, and controversies that constitute the field of American Political Thought. I have attached a copy of the syllabus so you may pick anything related to the works you see there. If you have any further questions, please let me know, thank you.

“Exploring Developmental Stages through Film: An Analysis of [Film Title]”
Film Analysis
Assignment Description
Each analysis will be based on a feature length film that highlights the theories and concepts we are learning in our course. Each film is related to a particular stage of development and must be viewed during the time we are studying that stage.
You will likely need to view the film you choose to analyze more than once in order to most accurately cite content. With this in mind, you should be prepared to rent or borrow videos either through an online source or from a library or video rental source. The instructor will provide free sources when possible, but these may not always be available.
You will be responsible for watching ALL of the films on your own (for homework) but you will only need to analyze ONE film (of your choice) for the analysis assignment. You must watch all the films because we will discuss how each one relates to relevant theories and milestones from the text and other course resources. The list of films is as follows (Choose one for each age/stage)
Adolescence (choose one)
Pariah
Eighth Grade
Real Women Have Curves

“The Right to Belief: Examining Rowlands’ Argument and Wolf’s Response in Light of Hunter S. Thompson’s Philosophy”
You should rewrite sentences that I have marked as unclear, this may
require breaking them into multiple paragraphs, changing the phrasing,
or being more precise in your wording.
o Take “In reply to Rowlands’ argument, I would say that…” and
break the claim into multiple sentences, remind your reader what
the author has claimed or what you have already discussed:
“According to Rowlands, the “right to belief” is not a default
or moral right based on the fact that we are human beings.
Instead, the right to belief is an entitlement, which means that
we must be committed to defending ourselves when challenged or
criticized. However, I would argue that Rowlands fails to…”
– Assume your readers have not done the reading – you should take
multiple sentences to define any technical or non-ordinary term, such as
“objective” “hedonism” “intrinsic” and so on. Give me examples for
all the important ideas and explain how the example relates.
o For example, “According to the hedonist, the experience of
pleasure is the only intrinsic good. An intrinsic good is
something that is good for its own sake, not for what it brings
about. If you are happy then that is itself good, there is nothing
else that you need in order to have “goodness.” Conversely, if
you have money this is merely an instrumental good, valuable
because of what it brings about. If you spent money on something
that made you happy, then that happiness would be intrinsically
valuable, and explain why the money is valuable as well.”
– Remove sentences and/or entire passages that are repetitive or
irrelevant, as a writer/philosopher I have come to understand and
appreciate how often I have to write stuff that I do not use in the
final draft or at all – but actually writing it is necessary for me to
“Work out” what I really want to say. Not everything you write down is
useful, even though it took time and effort. Trust me, its normal!
– Add examples and provide further clarification for your readers – for
every term or idea give me an example (real or fictional) and explain to
your readers how it relates to the topic – pretend your readers do not
know anything, even if it seems repetitive. Be as specific as possible
– instead of referring to “arguments” “claims” and the like tell me
exactly what you or the author thinks – “I will tell you why I
disagree” replace with “I disagree because…”
– Re-organize paragraphs so the ideas fit and flow better – take time to
just
think about the main or most important ideas in the paper – how do
they relate to each other? Are they like dominos that fall down in a
particular order? Is it a “shotgun” approach that provides a bunch of
different problems? Is it a “narrative” where each part builds into a
story?
– Remove sentences and/or entire passages that are repetitive or
irrelevant, as a writer/philosopher I have come to understand and

final draft or at all – but actually writing it is necessary for me to

Title: A Call to Action: Addressing Voter Suppression in the African American Community in America
RESEARCH [DUE WEEK 8] INTRODUCTION:
ASSIGNMENT: This semester has hopefully given you a foundational understanding of the issues minority groups face in America & an idea for a “call to action” – a desire to stand/speak up for or work to improve living conditions for minority groups. For this essay, I want you to discuss/explain a current or enduring issue for a specific minority group & offer not only a way to deal with the issue but an explanation for why it needs to be addressed. You will use research to support your claims, identify the problem, offer a well-thought-out solution, & argue for its implementation. Some examples of possible issues that could be addressed: if you are addressing the LGTB community, you might focus on their representation in media or even legal problems such as access to bathrooms, conversion therapy, or adoption difficulties. Or, if you are discussing the African American community, you could look at voter suppression in a variety of states or police violence. These are examples only – you may choose to write about them, but you are not limited to them. Students should address issues that they really care about because a “call to action” is more than an argument; it is a philosophy of the humanities and being humane.
FORMAT:
MLA Format
Name, date, class & RESEARCH on the first page in the upper left corner
Last name and pg# in upper right header of all subsequent pages
Double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font
REQUIREMENTS:
1000-1500 word minimum
Multiple paragraphs & evidence of editing/planning
Clear thesis/argument & analysis
Use of at least THREE credible sources
Use of at least one quote &/or paraphrase, complete with in-text citation done in proper MLA format for each source
Properly formatted MLA Works Cited page
INSTRUCTION:
Select ONE minority group or microculture to write about
A narrow topic allows you to be more focused.
You may choose any microculture or minority group in America to write about, including but not limited to:
Age/generations
Race
Ethnicity
Sex &/or Gender
Sexual Orientation
Differently Abled or people dealing with diseases
People with mental health issues
Economic class
Religion
English as a second-language speakers
You need to select an issue & an actionable strategy for your focus. This means it’s something that could actually be implemented.
To just say something like “racism is wrong & we should end it,” while true, is not actionable. Come up with something that can actually be done.
HOW TO:
Define & identify the minority group (DO NOT address ALL or multiple minorities – focus on ONE) and outline/forecast the major parts of your essay.
Address, describe, &/or explain a specific problem for that minority group.
Offer a defined, actionable solution and how it will help the group/situation.
Support your contentions and “call to action” throughout your essay with valid chains of reason, examples, critical thinking, and most importantly the requirements listed below.
Conclude your essay with an explanation on why it matters that this issue is addressed & why it is beneficial to the group & America at large to have this issue dealt with.
