  • Title: Mitigating Employee Loss in Small Companies: Strategies for Retention and Contingency Planning The Negative Effects of Key Employee Departures on Company Operations

Please answewr the questions in bold!!
    Please seperate each response.
    1. When a major U.S. city recognized that more than 70 percent of its IT staff was eligible to retire within a three-year period, it immediately implemented a plan to start bringing in new IT staff and pairing them with experienced veterans. Because the city’s IT systems were almost exclusively developed in-house over 20 years, organizational IT knowledge was critical, and some required skills could not be obtained on the open market. Does this issue suggest another area that should be addressed in crisis management and contingency planning? In which plan or document should this issue have been addressed already?
    2. Agree or Disagree? Why or Why Not?
Small companies are perhaps more vulnerable than large organizations to the loss of key employees and the resulting loss of company knowledge. What steps can a small company take to mitigate this potential loss?
There are several steps that small companies can use to mitigate potential loss, and this can include a continuous investment in developing employees, since many employees always look to grow in their career and move on to the next phase in their career path, so it makes sense if small companies encourage employee’s professional growth and development. Doing so will enable employees to remain loyal to the company since they are getting the value of enriching their knowledge and shaping their career progression.
Also, small companies need to attract employees with better competitive benefits, like good retirement plan, 401k matching, flexible remote work schedule, tuition reimbursement benefit, great health care benefits, as this reduces the loss of employees, if they are convinced, they are getting the best deal and benefit from their current employer, there won’t be any reason for an employee to hop around jobs.
Also, many companies put more emphasis only on the base salary and don’t really bother to improve on benefits, while forgetting the facts that majority of their employees have families to cater for and they are not relying solely on just the base pay, so a good benefit program will go a long way in retaining talents. Employees can sign up for good medical or dental care with the company which covers their family’s medical expenses including their kids etc.
Employers should also promote a work culture where they get to become familiar with their employees on a personal level and not just all about work, sometimes, employees like to feel appreciated for their had work and knowing that the company cares about their wellbeing, says a lot about the company’s culture, so managers should be trained to ensure they check in with employees and assist in any way possible, even though some issues are very personal and employees might not be willing to disclose personal issues with their managers, but having a manager who is passionate to care enough about his direct reports and extending support anytime possible goes a long way with retaining talents and reducing the risk of loosing potential employees. Employees are humans and if you treat humans with compassion and care, they never forget the good deeds. Sometimes, it is not really about the money or how well paid you are at a current company, if that same company has a toxic work environment, you are still going to leave that organization someday, to a different company with better work environment that treats employees with respect and dignity that maintains high moral standards and work culture even though it means taking a pay cut for a new role. (I have seen and withnessed this happen in reality/real life scenario).
In addition to key executives, some positions in a company can be considered critical to its continuing success. What will happen if a network administrator leaves? What customers or contacts would the company lose if a key sales representative leaves? What other positions can you name where a loss would have a potentially significant negative effect on the company?
In addition to guaranteeing network security, resolving problems, and overseeing system upgrades, a network administrator is essential to the upkeep of the organization’s IT infrastructure. The departure of a network administrator may result in interruptions to network services, heightened susceptibility to cyberattacks, and protracted troubleshooting of technical problems, all of which could compromise data security and overall productivity.
“Cross-training is an essential duty because it allows others to temporarily take over essential responsibilities in the case of an emergency that forces employees to leave their positions. While cross-training can be accomplished through many of the formal training methods, it typically takes place through one-on-one coaching and on-the-job training” –  (Whitman & Mattord, 2020).
Small organizations should practice the act of implementing cross training in their environment for roles that are critical to the organization operations, like Security Architecture, Network engineering., system administration, etc. so incase of any emergency, there will be backup for already trained employees to step into those roles and pick up from the pieces.  They can also implement job rotation as well which involves, “the movement of employees from one position to another so they can develop additional skills and abilities”. – (Whitman & Mattord, 2020).
Also, when key sales representatives leaves a company, there will be loss of high value customer or contacts from the sales representative, as sometimes, this sales representative are really good at their job with developing personal rapport and business relationship with their clients/customers, so even if a company is able to get a replacement to fill in the same role, it might be difficult to recover that lost relationship that was already built up by the previous key sales representative, and the new sales representative as to start from the ground up in building trust and a new working relationship with the customer which isn’t possible but might take time and commitment to win a trust of a customer.
A vital role where a loss would have a potentially significant negative effect on the company is the role as a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) since it involves budgeting, assessing risk management, working on financial reporting, etc. so a loss of a Chief Financial Officer can cause issues as the company might face financial reporting errors, disruption of financial processes, and an influence on strategic financial decision-making could result from this. Failure to comply with regulations, monetary losses, and a decline in investor trust could all arise from these issues.

  • Title: Exploring the Significance of [Topic]: A Research Proposal

    Background:
Generally speaking, a research proposal “is a concise and coherent summary of your proposed research. It sets out the central issues or questions that you intend to address. It outlines the general area of study within which your research falls, referring to the current state of knowledge and any recent debates on the topic” (University of Birmingham). In this sense, you can think of your proposal as a very rough draft of an introductory paragraph- the paragraph that guides your essay. Keep in mind that during the process, there can and will be changes.   The proposal is a starting point.  As you research, select your articles and think about your paper, you might uncover something you did not think of earlier.
    Components of a Research Proposal:
The informal research proposal should include a discussion of your proposed topic, a rationale for studying this topic, and a tentative plan for how you will conduct the research. The proposal should be no less than 1 page and no more than 2 pages in length. It should include the following:
Introduction and Rationale: This is brief and general info about the subject/field/area in which you are exploring. Explain why you believe this particular issue is significant, or important for us to know. You want to explain here why this is something people should consider, know, learn more about, etc.
Background (Exigence) of the phenomenon, problem, movement, group, idea, etc. Explain who was impacted or affected by the topic. This may be related to our society socially, politically, and/or economically.
Research Question (if you have one at this point)
Methodology: How do you plan to pursue this inquiry?
    Requirements:
    MLA/APA formatted document
    Length: 300-500 words
Appropriate use of italics or quotations for text titles
Appropriate use of parentheticals when applicable

  • “Re-Seeing the American Dream: An Analysis of a Film Scene Through the Lenses of Two Essays”

The Assignment Analyze how your film represents an issue related to our course focus- the American Dream. Consider how aspects of the scene (or scenes) speak to this specific issue. Engage two essays to craft lenses that help you make an argument for the scene’s representation of this issue. Then, explain how the understanding of the scene changes once both lenses are applied. End your argument with a “So What” about how the scene adds important information to the audience’s understanding of the film or representation of the issue in cinema.     Strategies * Return to SA3 to consider how the film scene you’ve chosen represents an issue related to our course focus. Develop an insightful lens-based (pulling from the essays) claim about your scene, and make this your essay’s thesis statement. Review the textbook’s section on “Thesis Statements” for suggestions about how to make your claim stronger. * For your analysis paragraphs, choose representative, interesting, and complex filmic evidence from your scene. Apply “10 on 1” to the evidence you choose in order to say more about less. * Use “Tools for Visual Analysis” and “The Method” on the film scene(s) to make observations about specific, concrete details. In your analysis, be sure to make the implicit explicit. Ask, what does the use of cinematic details convey? This analysis will be the basis for your interpretive conclusions. * Once you’ve analyzed the details of the film scene(s) to make a claim about how you read it, apply a key concept from each author’s text to show how they help us better understand (interpret) what is happening in the film scene in relation to your specific issue. Each author’s lens should be explored in at least one paragraph, with at least one additional paragraph bringing together the ideas about the film scene(s) analysis from both lenses. * In your conclusion, reflect on the “so what” of this analysis. What does this “re-seeing” of the film scene(s) through the lens of ideas in the essay show us about the film as a whole in regard to its portrayal of your issue or topic?  Criteria for Evaluation 1. Is the argument informed and driven by ideas present in the chosen essays? Does the argument use a concept from the essay(s) as a lens to develop an interpretation of the film that goes beyond matching and summary? 2. Does the essay develop an insightful claim about how the film represents an issue related to our course focus? Does the essay draw interpretive conclusions by asking and answering “So What?” 3. Does the essay support its main points through analysis of specific filmic elements?  4. Does the essay exhibit clarity and coherence by staying focused on developing one controlling idea? Do its ideas progress logically through the use of transitions, attributive tags, and appropriate word choice? Does it adhere to MLA format and citation standards and contain few, if any, grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors?

  • Title: The Benefits and Disadvantages of Strong State and National Governments in the United States: Examining Historical and Current Examples

For much of the nation’s history, the states and the nation operated under dual federalism, in which each level (Federal, State and Local) tended to exercise influence over different areas of policy. The era of dual federalism allowed for States’ to create policies unique to their state’s culture. This autonomy allowed for some states to exercise their State’s rights to create policies like racial and gender segregation of public spaces.
The boundaries between the authority of national and state governments have changed over time. Many of these changes have come about as a result of Supreme Court decisions finding states were violating the constitutional protections, privlidges, and or immunities of its residents. Historically, the Federal government has intervened on behalf of the residents within a state that are being denied their constitutional rights. The Federal government has also grown in size and in scope after major national catastrophies, for example: The Great Depression; Terrorist Attacks of 9/11/01; The Housing Crash of 2008; and the World Pandemic of COVID-19.
There are benefits and disadvantages to states creating laws for their own residents. There are are disadvantages and benefits to the Federal government creating laws that all states must adhere to.
After reading and viewing/listening to the lectures this week answer the following prompt:
Give one example (in history or current day) where a strong state government is in the best interest of U.S. residents.
Gives one example (in history or current day) where a strong national government is in the best interest of U.S.residents.
In both examples, explain why and cite your lectures and readings where applicable.

  • “Tracing History through Primary Sources: Exploring the Significance of Family Artifacts”

    Introduction
The point of primary document-driven historical research is actually fairly simple: what does an artifact we can actually experience now tell us about how someone else experienced it in the past? The “stuff” of our experience becomes in small form of what the French historian, Pierre Nora refers to as a “place of memory”—a thing that becomes a symbolic connection of our experience to the past.
The focus of this project will be one of the following artifacts:
You may choose a food or meal that is important to your family (the artifact in this case will be a recipe, or an interview with someone who makes the dish, or a photograph of the meal being prepared). Now you need to figure out what larger familial, community, or cultural concerns it represents, and where it came from.
Another option is a household item or technology that was once part of your family’s everyday life but is no longer. This might be a piece of equipment or technology that is now obsolete—like an 8-track cassette player or an old-fashioned TV set or stereo, or a butter churn, or a potato ricer, or a wash board, or a corded phone, for instance. All of these items were once indispensable items in many homes, but newer technologies have replaced them.
    Tracing a History
The big difference between working with primary sources vs. secondary sources is that tracing history from a primary source usually includes looking at objects that are intimately connected to a person who has somehow attached value to it. What you’re looking for is how that value became attached. What’s the story leading to that?
Think about the things that are important you, for instance the things to which you have the greatest emotional attachment: you probably already have a personal or family history connected with it. A game because you played it with siblings or friends. A song someone sang for you. A tool because someone taught you how to use it. A kind of food or recipe because someone you liked made it for you.
But such items also likely have a broader, community or cultural value. Maybe the game taught you coordination skills and numbers. Maybe the song has a long history and tells something about the culture whose people still sing it. Perhaps that tool was something necessary for harvesting crops or building furniture. Perhaps that recipe mattered because it was a way of celebrating a holiday or preparing fresh ingredients to last through the winter season.
    Research
Once you identify your primary source (the artifact), you should decide on your remaining sources. You may include one additional primary source if you wish; this might involve an interview with a family member, or a photograph or letter.   Then, you will set about doing your secondary source workshop. You’ll need to learn about this object you have chosen, and you may need to search books, encyclopedias, and older newspapers to accomplish this.
You should use at least two secondary sources in this search, and should quote and/or summarize from both, with special attention to correct documentation.
    The Essay
The essay will trace the history and significance of this object in its own time, and that time may come up to the present, or not, depending on the object and whether it is still a part of your life.
    Technical requirements:
Length: About three pages, typed and double spaced. You should include a (reasonably sized) photograph of the object as part of your essay. Put it near the beginning, so that you can refer to it as necessary.
At least one primary source, and at least two secondary sources.
    Thorough and correct MLA documentation.

  • “Transforming Trauma: A Guide for Trauma-Informed Interviews with Sexual Assault Victims” Title: The Benefits of Online Education in the Age of Technology

Interviews with Sexual Assault Victims: Trauma-Informed Techniques and Communications
No directly quoted material may be used in this project paper.
For this Project, you are to assume the role as Commander of the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) of a large police department. Recently, you were approached by another department’s Chief (located in Maryland) that has received criticism for its handling of several sexual assault investigations. Complaints from survivors, and advocates sitting in on law enforcement interviews, included insensitive treatment during interviews, victim-blaming questions, issues with language used in reporting documentation (i.e. had sexual intercourse v. nonconsensual sexual assault) lack of consistent follow-up and communication, and failure to provide information about supportive services during and beyond the investigation.
You have been approached because your department underwent significant changes and updated Standard Operating Procedures to ensure investigative approaches are consistent with trauma-informed practices. From this, community assessments of survivors’ experiences have shown increased trust in the reporting process, improved community-police relationships, and an overall increase in reports of sexual assault.
For this Project, you have been asked to provide a department training and procedures guide for the Chief of the partner department that includes recommendations on investigations techniques and treatment of sexual assault survivors.
    Required Research & Analysis:
Provide a brief background on the crime of sexual assault, including prevalence rates, vulnerable populations, and barriers to reporting.
Offer analysis regarding how historical rape laws and current rape myths have influenced investigative approaches.
Suggest what topical education should be required for officers and detectives interacting with victims reporting sexual assault and explain why?
Address what training is required for detectives in order to insure interviews with victims are consistent with trauma-informed techniques?
What considerations should departments make regarding timelines of initial victim interviews and follow-up interviews given our current understanding of trauma exposure and memory recall?
How is trauma memory recall different from our traditional understanding of considerations when assessing reliable memory?
How has the FETI interview approach been shown to combat the consequences of trauma and why does this approach provide more reliable and valid data?
How should law enforcement expect survivors of sexual assault to act during interviews?
What considerations should be made when documenting reports of sexual assault?
What information, notice, and support should be provided to all victims under Maryland victims’ rights laws? Are there any special requirements for victims of sexual assault?
What do Maryland law guidelines suggest in terms of victim treatment by law enforcement?
How do positive victim experiences with law enforcement impact overall reporting rates, crime data, and ultimately the resources dedicated to policing and solvability of sexual assault cases?
Required Support: You must cite to course materials to support your analysis in your memo. Your memo should include a References Page with at least 5 resources from the course using the American Psychological Association (APA) formatting standards. Refer to the APA information found in Content -> Course Overview -> Course Resources.
    Required Formatting:
While it may be possible to adequately cover the material in under 8 pages, that is the minimum length recommended to ensure you fully answer the questions asked.
Paper must be double spaced, Times-New Roman, 12-point font and 1” margins all around.
All APA 7th edition format requirements must be followed (cover page, in text citations, references page). Refer to the APA information found in Content -> Course Overview -> Course Resources.
You must have at least 5 resources to support your thoughts/opinions/information.  These must be cited both in text as well as at the end of the document. Your paper should not contain direct quotes, sourced material must be paraphrased.
