It will be helpful to read pages 60-61 in your textbook regarding Evaluating Nutrition Information and consider them as you write the article critique. Address the elements below as appropriate to your article:
    Identifying the purpose
What is the thesis or focus of this article?
What is the author’s intent in writing this article?
What does this article seek to add that is new on this topic?
Who is the audience for this article?
    Considering the source
What do you know about the journal or site publishing this article? Is there an academic focus? Is it geared to a specific audience?
Who is/are the author(s)? What information indicates that they have expertise on the topic? What are their relevant credentials and affiliations?
Do the authors include academic references and cite them in the article? Include any impressions you have of these sources.
    Considering methodology and content
Write about the source of information the author(s) used for this article. Did the author(s) perform research, or did they look at a review of research done by others? If research was not conducted, what is the source of information on the topic (such as a literature review or the author’s expertise)?
What gaps or questions remain on this topic after reading this article? If the author is reporting on research they completed, what limitations does the author note that should be considered when interpreting the data (if any)?
Are there alternative ways to provide a counterargument to the author’s point? Does the author show awareness of alternative thinking related to the topic?
    Relevance
How does the author’s writing contribute to the nutritional topics in this wellness course?
Why did you select this topic? How might this information relate to you personally or professionally? What are your reactions and opinions regarding this article and the information presented?

  • “Awareness is Medicine: Addressing Postpartum Depression in Women”

Description:  you will create a public service announcement (PSA) using the theme of “Awareness is Medicine”. For this assignment you will develop a Youtube video (with audio) that is designed to inform a specific audience about a specific mental health issue. You will explain the prevalence of the mental illness for a specific population, diagnostic criteria for the mental illness, medication treatment options and side effects, psychotherapy resources, and and lifestyle medicine (i.e., nutrition, physical activity, stress mgmt., etc). This should be a 1-2 minute video with either acting or creative video work. The last few seconds of the PSA should contain your peer-reviewed citations. This should not be a PowerPoint presentation.  The rubric is in D2L. You will receive a grade in the gradebook, as well as a rubric with feedback.
    Specific Requirements:
    1. The PSA video must be at least 1 minute long and no more than 2 minutes. There should also be a good balance of information about the audience/mental health issue, diagnostic criteria, and treatment options.  Keep in mind that this is not very long, so you need to get your point across quickly and effectively. Use conversational language and make sure you leave the audience enough time to read text on the screen (if you use text).
    2. You can use any type of software to create your video and the video must include visual images (or acting) and audio.  (preferably powtoon)
    3. Clearly convey (in some manner-images, text, or audio) who your target audience is and what specific mental health issue is being targeted. MY TOPIC IS : Women (audience) and postpartum depression (mental health issue).
    4. Include prevalence of the mental illness for a specific population, diagnostic criteria for the mental illness, medication treatment options and side effects, psychotherapy resources, and lifestyle medicine options regarding the mental health issue.
    5. Include a list of references that you used to research your audience and topic at the end of your video presentation. You should have at least 5 references (not including the textbook).
    Recommendations:
    1. Research will be necessary to determine the population you should address and what mental health issue is specific to that population. It is recommended that students, at minimum, search the CDC (health statistics/health disparities) and NIMH websites.
    Time
    Video
    Audio
    0-10 seconds
    What will be shown?
    What will be heard?
    2. PSAs will be evaluated on inclusion of required elements (see above), creativity and quality, understanding of the topic, evidence of planning and organization, and individual effort. A grading rubric is posted on D2L. PSA’s that are difficult to read, listen to, or follow will be graded poorly. PSA’s that are not creative will also be graded poorly.
    3. The due date is listed on the syllabus. The PSA should be posted on YouTube (make sure it’s open to the public). One group member must submit the link to the PSA in D2L. The email needs to be received by 11:59 PM on the due date. For each day the PSA is late, there will be a 25% reduction in grade. PSAs received more than three days late will not be accepted.
