  • “Analyzing the Reliability of Data Sources: A Critical Examination of Misleading Graphs and Visual Displays”

    Data sources, are they reliable?
    Post 1: Initial Response
As you read about studies in newspapers and magazines, the actual data that was collected, which could be thousands of data entries, are not included in the article. Rather, you will likely find a visual representation or graph of the data. Many times, these displays can be misleading or exaggerated to get you to think a certain way. For this discussion, you will conduct an internet search to find an article that includes a graph or visual display. You will analyze the graph or visual display to determine whether the graph is misleading, exaggerated, or misrepresents the data. Then you will write a descriptive essay with a minimum of 5 paragraphs to address the following questions:
Consider what you know about misleading or exaggerated graphs.
When you looked at the graph for the first time, do you think it effectively showed the intended information? Why or why not?
Answer one of the two questions below.
Do you feel this graph was misleading in any way? Explain.
If you feel the graph is not misleading, why do you feel it is appropriate? Explain.
Would you have designed this graph differently? Such as design a different type, including other variables, or provide different labels? Why or why not?
Once you have found a graph or visual display in a news article, magazine, or internet story, draft your descriptive essay using the questions above as a guide. Do not simply answer each question, but put these ideas together into a cohesive descriptive essay with five paragraphs using the guidelines below.
When planning your essay keep in mind that APA formatting should be used. The essay should include a title page, a reference page, be double-spaced, and written in 12- point Times New Roman font. You are expected to use at least one outside source for this essay. Cite outside sources in proper APA format. You can find numerous APA resources in the Writing Center Writing Reference Library on the Research, Citation, and Plagiarism page. Resources from course readings, textbook, or other library sources can be used to support your discussion. Any time information is directly quoted, be sure to cite all sources by including in-text citations and a list of references. This does include a citation in APA format for the visual display you used.
Your writing should include a highly developed purpose and viewpoint. Descriptive writing is very detailed and should convince your reader through ideas. Your descriptive essay should also be written in Standard English and demonstrate exceptional content, organization, style, grammar, and mechanics. There should be no evidence of plagiarism. If you are unsure about what constitutes plagiarism, please review the plagiarism policy.

  • Title: Preparing for the Inevitable: Government Responsibility and Funding for Earthquake Preparedness

    rewite the paper
We all know that we live in an earthquake-vulnerable region of the country. We also have seen the devastation that results from earthquakes in other countries: while many of those locations were not retro-fitted to withstand big quakes, therefore leading to even more damage and loss of life, it is also known that nothing is guaranteed to be “earthquake-safe” and that a major quake is expected to hit our region in the future. With this in mind, please write a 1,000+ word essay that answers the following questions:
Which level of government should be responsible for earthquake preparedness? This includes adequate communication systems before, during and after a quake, warning systems before quakes and aftershocks, emergency response mechanisms that can help with building collapses, flooding, fires, food shortages, supply chain disruptions, medical needs, sanitation and safety after a quake.
Given that all of the above will be very expensive, where should the funding come from? And from what other government programs would that funding be taken (unless you suggest raising taxes to pay for it, in which case the question is, how could we fairly assess taxes to pay for earthquake concerns when other parts of the country are not at risk for earthquakes, coping instead with hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.)?
You do not need to do outside research for this essay; please write in your own words and do your best to explain and expand on your suggestions / opinions! Remember: LBCC utilizes plagiarism and AI detection software: any submitted work that is not your own original writing will be flagged and will earn zero credit.

  • “Developmental Theories and Attachment Styles: Understanding Human Development at Different Ages”

STEP 1: In a discussion post of at least 200 words, demonstrate your understanding of concepts learned in this module by responding to the following prompt:
Pick an age: 1, 3, 7, 12, 15, 22, 35, 50, or 75. Think of your own experience or the experiences of those you know at this age. Consider the major developmental theories you learned about in this module (psychosexual, psychosocial, cognitive, and moral), and apply them to the age of your choosing. Describe either your own experiences, experiences of someone else, or an imagined situation at this age and use appropriate terms and definitions from the module to describe that stage of development. Do you agree with the developmental theories that describe this age? Why or why not?
STEP 2: One development theory is attachment theory….Attachment theory is a very interesting theory that has its roots in psychoanalytic theory. The premise of attachment theory centers on the idea of bonding between caregiver and child. The theory of attachment was originally developed by John Bowlby (1907 – 1990), a British psychoanalyst who was attempting to understand the intense distress experienced by infants who had been separated from their parents. Bowlby observed that separated infants would go to extraordinary lengths (e.g., crying, clinging, frantically searching) to prevent separation from their parents or to reestablish proximity to a missing parent.
In an effort to measure parent/child attachment, Bowlby and Ainsworth created the “STRANGE SITUATION” experiment. These experiments have been conducted across settings and across many cultures. Bowlby and Ainsworth’s research and the research conducted by other psychologists interested in attachment have concluded 3 different attachment styles that seem to stretch into adulthood.
    1) Secure attachment
    2) Anxious Avoidant attachment
    3) Avoidant Attachment
How would you explain each of these? Can you see these styles in others or yourself? As children, these various attachment styles may manifest in various ways. As the individual matures, the attachment style seems to be a mainstay. In other words, adult relationships can be dependent on the relationships we have as children…withour primary caregivers….do you think this is true? (50+ words)

  • Title: The Moral Dilemma of Edward: A Philosophical Analysis of Human Value and Ethical Decision-Making

Edward is taking his daily walk near the train tracks when he notices that the train that is approaching is out of control. Edward sees what has happened: the train driver saw five workmen ahead on the tracks and slammed on the brakes, but the brakes failed, and the driver fainted. The train is now rushing toward the five men; the banks are so steep that they will not be able to get off the track in time. Fortunately, Edward is standing next to a switch, which he can throw, that will turn the train onto a sidetrack. Unfortunately, there is one person standing on the sidetrack with his back turned. Edward can throw the switch, killing the one, or he can refrain from doing this, letting the five die. Remember, Edward did not build the train, nor is he responsible for its current predicament. However, if he pulls the switch, he is both intervening and making a judgment regarding human value. Take this into account when writing your essay.  There is a reason this is considered a “moral dilemma.”
Incorporating what you have learned from ethics, answer the following questions.
    1. “Do you think Edward should throw the switch? Why?”
    2. Would a Utilitarian agree? Why?
    3. Would a Kantian agree? Why?
    4. What do you believe is the best option “What is The Good?” Why?

  • Title: The Role of History and Tradition in the Roberts Court’s Reproductive Rights and Gun Rights Decisions: A Democratic Legitimacy Perspective

Instructions: In a short, argumentative essay of up to 750 words (excluding citations), explain whether you agree, disagree, or partially agree/disagree (specifying which elements) with the following:
Prompt: “In 2022 the Roberts Court announced two groundbreaking ‘history and tradition’ decisions in the fields of reproductive rights and gun rights, Dobbs v. Jackson and NYRPA v. Bruen. While Living Constitutionalists criticized these decisions as out of step with modern values, both decisions increased democratic legitimacy by returning policy decisions to elected legislatures where they belong. History is a useful source of moral and legal guidance and an emphasis on tradition ensures the stability of the rule of law. While Originalism can be difficult to implement consistently, it is nonetheless an important constraint on dangerous judicial overreach that threatens individual rights.”
Material to Cover: In your essay be sure to include references to course readings and materials. Secondary articles by Post and Siegel, Siegel, Lund, Levin, Bazelon, and Posner would be especially helpful.
Advice: A good example of an Op-ed we read for class is Linda Greenhouse, “Religious Doctrine, Not the Constitution, Drove the Dobbs Decision” for lecture 11.
Citations: Citations should be either parenthetical or footnotes and include the name of the author or case name, title, year, and page number (if citing to a specific passage). You may use APA, MLA, or Chicago style of reference, as long as you are consistent throughout the essay.
Additional Research: You may do additional research beyond course readings, but it is not required to write a successful essay. If you choose to do additional research, you must clearly cite these sources with enough information for the teaching team to find the source.
Word Limit: For every 50 words over the word limit of 750 (excluding citations), 1 point will be deducted from the total score.
