  • Analyzing the Effectiveness of “The Power of Storytelling” by Jane Smith: How Seven Elements Contribute to a Compelling Argument

    An introduction that has
    A creative lead-in/hook.
An introduction to the article with the author’s name and “Article Title.”
A statement of the article’s claim. (what does the author claim about the topic)
A thesis statement that evaluates the article. (Is it well written or not? What aspects will you, the writer, analyze) The thesis will NOT address whether or not you agree with the article. That is irrelevant to this assignment.
    3) Body paragraphs (4 minimum)
Each paragraph will address one of the seven elements we discussed.
Each paragraph will have transition words to help the reader move from one section to the next or sentence to the next.
Each paragraph will have a clear topic sentence and a clear concluding sentence. Avoid “First, Then, Next” framing. Use more sophisticated transitions, as discussed in the lecture.
Each paragraph will use at least one quote from the article, cited correctly in MLA.
Each paragraph will discuss NOT the article’s content but rather how the quotes you choose illustrate the point of the section.
    4) A conclusion must
Summarize the main point of the paper
Restate the thesis statement in different words
End the concluding paragraph with a broader note that is not a cliche or formulaic ending.
    Language
Try to stay in the third person, meaning you will not say things like “I think that…” or “You can see that…” See the sample paper for how this might look. NO: I, Me, Mine, Ours, Our, Myself, We, Ourselves, You, Yours, Your, Yourself
Third Person: She, Her, He, Him, They, Them, herself, hers, his, himself, themselves, their, theirs
    Formatting and Mechanics
Use the MLA style to format your paper, as the lectures explain.
Make sure that you proofread your paper carefully before turning it in.

  • “Promotion Denial Based on Gender: A Case Study of Discrimination at Cleaning, Inc.” To: [Recipient] From: [Sender] Date: [Date] Subject: Promotion Denial for Curt at Cleaning, Inc. I am

Hudson runs a successful business operation called Cleaning, Inc. that employs a workforce of over 100 people in various positions. The company has contracts with several companies to provide office-cleaning services. One employee, Curt, had been with the company for almost two years when he applied for a supervisory position. The position involved higher pay and better benefits. Although he was qualified to be a site supervisor, Curt was not promoted. Cleaning, Inc. explained that only a woman could be hired because the position involved regular searches of the women employees’ locker room to look for any items reported stolen from cleaning sites.
    For this assignment:
Write a two- to three-page memorandum that covers all three components of the email outlined above.
Your paper should be written in current APA Style for formatting and references. Include both a title page and reference list that includes at least two scholarly sources (your text can be one of the sources).

  • Reducing Medication Errors: A Capstone Project Proposal

Write a 3 page paper in APA format with a minimum of 3 references.

    Project Objectives
The objectives are something you hope to achieve from doing the project
    Strategies
Strategies are the method you will use to reach the objectives you have set for your project
    Background Analysis
This may also be called a situation analysis. This section you will need to discuss what is happening that made you decided to do your capstone project.
For example, the nurses at a facility are making a many medication errors. For your capstone project you decide you will try to reduce the number of medication errors from 10 every week to three a week. You will have to analyze why the errors are taking place. Maybe the lighting in the medication room is poor or maybe the nurses are working 70 hours every week.
You will also need to locate peer review articles that support you analysis.

  • “A Multigenerational Portrait: An Analysis of Frida Kahlo’s My Grandparents, My Parents, and I” A Multigenerational Portrait: An Analysis of Frida Kahlo’s My Grandparents, My Parents, and I

Last week, you were asked to complete a formal analysis of Starry Night. This week, you will be building off of that and complete a complete analysis (form and content) of Frida Kahlo’s My Grandparents, My Parents, and I.
Frida Kahlo, My Grandparents, My Parents, and I (Family Tree), oil and tempera on zinc, 1936.
Within your analysis, you need to address the subject matter, important elements/principles, subtext, and if there is any iconography.
For full credit, ensure you address all aspects of the assignment and are clear and concise within 350-600 words (this may involve breaking up the analysis into smaller paragraphs and modeling it like a mini-essay, etc.).
When beginning this assignment, you can approach it like you did for the first part of your formal analysis. Make a list of everything you see, decide what is the most important, and then discuss that. Also, remember, subject matter refers to literally what you see within the artwork, while subtext is what you think it all means.
If you want an example of a complete analysis, see Analyses Expectations.
Finally, as a reminder, I want you to analyze the works. I do not want you to tell me online what people think the artwork means. It is acceptable if you feel you need to research the historical context or the symbolic meaning of objects within the work. If you do this and use outside sources to strengthen your analysis, you must cite them.
Remember, do not submit a Google document (.GDOC) or paste a link to a Google document. I can’t view it in Canvas, can’t open it after downloading it onto my computer, and, in most cases, don’t have access to view the link. If you are using Google Docs for your assignments, make sure that you export it into a PDF or DOC before submitting it to Canvas.

  • “Creating Positive Change: Rezoning for Transitional Housing in a Suburban Neighborhood” Title: “Investing in Public Parks: A Proposal for a Healthier and Happier Community” Slide 1: Introduction – Briefly introduce the proposal for investing in public parks – State the purpose of the presentation and the desired

Scenario 1: Suburban Neighborhood of Single-Family Homes
Proposal before the Council: Rezone to permit construction of transitional housing (following drug rehab) for teenagers. Neighborhood zoned residential did not permit non-related minors congregant living in a supervised setting.
[Transitional housing, also called a halfway house, is the opportunity for individuals (here, minors) who do not have a family to “go home to” or would benefit from supervised care, to live in a neighborhood setting. These individuals usually go out to work or school, while having guidance, secure “home” setting for a short time.]
    Scenario 2: Lower-Income Housing Neighborhood
Proposal before the Council: Approve a Bond proposal for a community center to be built. [A bond proposal is put on the ballot on election day. The entire community votes on whether to approve the Bond. A Bond is the ability for a jurisdiction to borrow money at a low interest rate to do a major improvement project. The proposed site was in a neighborhood of modest homes and was accessed by one street in/out].
    Scenario 3: High-End Residential Neighborhood
Proposal before the Council: Build a walk-and-bike trail along the neighborhood boundary that will connect the center of the city to the DC Metro and allow pedestrians and cyclists to avoid heavy-traffic roads.
    Scenario 4: Under-Served Urban Area
Proposal before the Council: Rezone to allow construction of a full service big-box store (i.e., supercenter, large retail establishment) in a disadvantaged neighborhood. [The site was in a neighborhood with small businesses and homes].
    Scenario 5: High-Traffic Business Corridor
Proposal before the Council: Rezone to allow construction of a four-story independent-living apartment building for 55-and-older adults. [Independent living individuals are high functioning seniors who no longer want to take care of a large home/yard. Many continue to be employed and drive cars. They are looking for a congregate type living situation. No children are allowed to live in these 55+ residences. This project backed up to a single-family home neighborhood]Assignment tasks
Select the scenario you want to investigate and address
Create a presentation that you would present in front of city council. Please adhere to the following structure and content requirements for the presentation submission:
create an attractive presentation that is visually appealing (not over crowded slides, appropriate style and size font, etc.) and supplement the information on the slides with more in-depth information in the notes section of the Power Point OR by attaching a script that you would use as you talk about each slide
    You can use PowerPoint
In terms of content, you should include the following information:
Clearly state which scenario you are tackling in your proposal – optionally, you might consider a catchy/creative title!
Briefly describe what you would like the city council to adopt – you can get creative and use the scenario as a starting point if there is a more specific angle you want to take (you will not be marked down for slightly modifying your proposal if you have come across more impactful ideas during your research) or you can stick to the proposal scenario exactly as it is outlined
Include 2-3 motives that the proposal might be rejected – i.e., the “cons” – these should be supplemented with external sources (peer review journals, academic/professional blogs, reputable journalistic stories, etc.)
and they should be included as in-text citation and in reference list following APA formatting
After pointing out the cons transition into 3-5 motives why your proposal should be accepted – i.e., the “pros” – these should be supplemented with external sources (peer review journals, academic/ professional blogs, reputable journalistic stories, etc.) and they should be included as in-text citation and in reference list following APA formatting
Consider including a short story/illustrate the potential positive outcomes that illuminates why this proposal is a good idea
Consider using statistics to prove why your proposal idea merits the positive vote
Finish with a strong conclusive slide that state your call to action and what you want the city council to do. You can have a narrower goal than the scenario or emphasize some key points of the scenario aim in this point.
Feel free to be creative with your final call to action.
Again, make sure you in-text citations on the slides and notes/script follow APA formatting and that you provide a reference slide/list at the end of the presentation or in your script that is following APA formatting
You should have anywhere between 5-10 slides

  • “Multiple Intelligence: The Value of Diverse Knowledge”

Content — The essay outlines at least three specific and distinct types of knowledge the writer has. Each type of knowledge is explained: how the writer gained it, how it is expressed in his/her own life, how it will play out in the future, etc.
The writer has created an introduction that hooks the reader. The introduction begins very generally and works toward the end to include a well crafted thesis.
A strong conclusion extends the thought beyond the essay. Why is it important that we obtain and seek to gain mulitple types of intelligence?
All effective essays include well-defined introduction, body, and conclusion sections. Within these sections are paragraphs that fit well together and advance the thesis statement.
Paragraphs have a structure as well. Each is introduced by the point the paragraph will make. After this topic sentence come several example sentences. These sentences answer the questions: why, or how, or for example. After several comments that answer these questions have been addressed, the writer pulls the essay to a close with a summary sentence that is broader in nature. Transition words are used throughout a paragraph that is structured well. The writer uses the different sentence types to aid in flow of the paragraph as well as to add variety and style.
Even the strongest essay will suffer if riddled with grammatical errors, short, choppy sentences and weak writer’s voice. At this level of writing, most errors fall into these categories: punctuation, pronoun agreement, weak word choice, and misuse of gendered/first-person language. Formal and standard English is expected for all submissions in this class.
    Remember not to use “you.”
This is probably a category that you may have never seen on a rubric before. I like to include it because good writing costs the writer something: time, thought, work, and critical thinking. Writing is our opportunity to share ourselves to the world (or at least to our immediate audiences.) Most humans have a strong desire to be heard; at the same time, if we want people to listen, we must say something worthwhile — something pondered, something developed . . . not our first musings at the last minute. Granted, some folks have the gift — they can sit down and write deeply and passionately without a good deal of effort. Most of us can’t ,and when we try to, our writing is weak. Investment is demonstrated by thought beyond those first thoughts. Investment in development. Investment is a genuine desire to improve. Investment is demonstrated from one essay to the next when the writer learns to avoid errors that have been noted in prior essays. Use the annotations and feedback I provide you on each and every submission to make corrections and change your error patterns.
