  • Title: Policy Brief on the Genetic Variation and Viability of Boreal Woodland Caribou in the Frank Church Wilderness Area, Idaho.

    Instructions:
A hypothetical population of boreal woodland caribou has recently been found in a remote region of the Frank Church Wilderness area in central Idaho. Scientists thought caribou were extirpated from this region more than 100 years ago; however, reliable sightings have confirmed a small population persists in this remote region. Approximately 50 caribou have been confirmed and they are geographically isolated from other caribou populations.
You were recently hired as the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) biologist on the Frank Church Wilderness area woodland caribou recovery project. The USFWS is considering listing the Frank Church Wilderness area woodland caribou as an endangered species because of concerns regarding potentially low genetic variation and population viability. Your supervisor has just informed you that you will be briefing the USFWS Director on this situation in 5-weeks.
The Director’s has identified 5 topics that need to be covered in the brief. Your assignment is to develop a written brief to the Director that addresses the 5 topics identified below. The Director has a PhD in Political Science, but she doesn’t have a strong biological background so you must define and explain key genetic terminology and concepts included in the brief. These types of briefings are commonly used to provide wildlife agency administrators concise and understandable scientific information to inform decision-making.
Your policy brief should have separate sections addressing the following briefing topics:
Section 1 – Genetic Variation in Populations: Explain why genetic variation in individuals and populations is important for population viability. Your coursework in weeks 2 and 3 will prepare you for this section, and your week 2 and 3 assignments and week 4 discussion will prepare you for this section..
Section 2 – Gene Flow and Small Populations: Explain why the lack of connectivity to other woodland caribou populations is problematic. The Prairie Chicken case study and other learning materials in week 3 and 4 will prepare you for this section.
Section 3 – Genetic Variation and Fitness: How can inbreeding lead to population extinction? Is there an example of this happening? Explain. Your learning materials and assignments in week 3 will prepare you for this section.
Section 4 – Assessing Population Genetic Structure: How could we figure out how inbred this population may be? What tools could be used to assess the population genetic structure, and what type of information would the tool provide? Your textbook reading assignments and discussion in week 2 will review genetic tools to assess population genetic structure and your assignment in week 4 provide additional information on this topic.
Section 5 – Wildlife Conservation Genetics: What management action do you recommend the USFWS take to improve genetic variability in this population and improve population viability? How would their success or failure be assessed? Your week 2 and 3 discussions, and week 4 video lecture will review various management actions to improve genetic variability and prepare you for this section.
In addition to these sections, you will be required to have a reference section at the end of your policy brief. Your reference section should include all references used throughout all five sections of the policy brief.
    Submission Requirements
The briefing should be no more than 5 pages and identify and address each briefing topic.
References from at least 10 credible sources should be included at the end of the briefing, and references do not count as part of your 5-page briefing limit. Please be sure to write clearly and objectively. Readers should feel that the report is written by an objective scientist Links to an external site. , and not be able to detect personal opinions. As with all your work in this course, be sure to cite your sources in APA format Links to an external site. .

  • “Analyzing the Rhetorical Situation: A Critical Analysis of a Speech” Rhetorical Analysis of “I Co-Founded Facebook. It’s Time to Break It Up.”

    Assignment Prompt: Rhetorical Analysis
    Overview
Before you start working on your own research argument essay, you will spend some time studying the arguments of others, to better understand how they successfully structured and presented a persuasive project. The rhetorical analysis is a foundational assignment to introduce you to the “rhetorical situation,” as a concept. The goal is for you to take what you learn about successful argument, and apply it to your own writing in this course.
For this rhetorical analysis assignment, you will analyze a speech (see the options below) to gain a better understanding of “the rhetorical situation”- the audience, purpose, medium, and context–within which the speech was created. In addition to dissecting the speech’s rhetorical situation, you will also identify and discuss the author’s choice of rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) or evidence. *This is the one and only assignment that is not driven by your personal topic selection, as all the following assignments build on each other starting with the Annotated Bibliography and concluding with the Research Story.
    Expectations
As a foundational assignment, the rhetorical analysis will help you to:
Identify and analyze the rhetorical elements of a piece of communication
Assess the effectiveness of a speaker’s choices, in relation to the rhetorical situation
Build a foundation for future argument writing based on the skills and strategies identified and analyzed in this assignment
    Requirements
Length:  There is a 1000 word-minimum. All elements noted below are to be included in the analysis. See Assignment Organization.
    * if the minimum word count is not met, your assignment will be returned with no grade and a resubmission will be required.
Organization: Check out the table below for more information about the required content and conditions of each component:
    Component
    Content
    Conditions
    Introduction (Description)
The intro is your first chance to reach your reader, engage their interest, and include all of the forecasting for the rest of the essay, such as the purpose of the writing project, and the parameters of your investigation. Be sure to focus on what the speaker is doing, how, and why, using the conditions as your guide.
Make sure that you clearly state the speaker and the title of the speech, along with any other details that will help provide the reader with context about your analysis.
Place the speech in a broader context.
Introduce the speech by characterizing the speaker and the occasion.
Identify the audience and situation for which the speech is intended.
    Describe the speaker’s purpose.
THESIS/CLAIM: Identify the rhetorical strategies that you have decided to discuss and indicate, in general terms, how they function to promote the author’s purpose in relation to the intended audience.
    Body (Analysis)
The body will include paragraphs that will have their own topic sentences developed with specifics from the speech. You may want to focus each paragraph on one rhetorical strategy, or you may focus on different parts of one strategy.  Useful strategies for developing paragraphs include:
    Defining the rhetorical strategy(ies).
Quoting or paraphrasing examples to illustrate the writer’s use of the strategy (two or three examples generally suffice).
Explaining how the example illustrates the strategy and how the strategy contributes to the writer’s purpose.
    Conclusion (Evaluation)
The conclusion serves the purpose of reiterating your thesis, briefly summarizing the main points of your analysis, and explaining the significance of your analysis. The significance of your analysis may be suggested by asking questions such as these:
How do the rhetorical strategies that you discussed explain the effects the speaker achieved with his or her audience?
Why were the strategies effective or not effective with the speaker’s core constituency and with other audiences?
What do the rhetorical strategies suggest about the speaker’s agenda?
Document Formatting: MLA formatting: Heading (name, assignment name, course name, date), original title, header (page numbers), line-spacing (double-spaced), 1”margins, and 12-point font size, Times New Roman or sans-serif font. The thesis must be underlined.
Genre/Style: Formal analysis: thesis-driven and paragraph formatted

  • “Exploring the Positive and Negative Effects of Social Media: A Personal Perspective”

I must respond back to a classmate about her post pertaining to social media. Here is what she wrote. All I need to do is respond back to her.
    what she wrote:
No, I don’t use social media, but I do have it. I use Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube. I only use the apps for creatively , networking, and keeping up with what’s going on across the world. However, these apps are not reliable enough to trust every piece of information, but I do use reliable sources to determine whether information is genuine, fake, or predictable. You must conduct your own investigation because social media can be deceptive and misguided.
Social media has changed the way we interact, date, find work, and live our lives. Some people prefer to engage with others via social media rather than in person, and they value the attention and views of those who are interested in them. In my opinion, social media has had both positive and negative effects on society as a whole. On the positive side, it teaches you how to collaborate with various applications and software, chatting and video apps, networking, finding businesses and jobs, friendships/relationships, creativity, education, real-life issues, and so on. In a negative influence, everyone wants to utilize social media for their everyday lives, which is okay if you have good news, but not everything should be announced since others might become jealous and tear down anything you publish or choose to share, but some of our successes must be celebrated privately. For example, people at your workplace may find you and report back to your job about what you post and do on social media. People could damage your reputation and finances by utilizing social media against you.
Yes, I have considered identity theft because hackers can gain access to your personal information by saving your card number, account/routing number on social media—the Internet in general—and my family does not share more than necessary, and the most important lesson I have learned in my life is that privacy is key. No sharing of financial information with anyone.

First, complete the measure of attachment style at the following website:
    https://openpsychometrics.org/tests/ECR.php
    Take your time, answer honestly
You can agree or disagree to allow your responses to be used for research purpose. Your decision wont have any impact on this class / your assignment.
Second, consider your feedback and answer the following questions:
Attachment Theory Questions:Is this totally accurate, partially accurate, or inaccurate for you? Why/why not
Is the feedback true for all of your relationships (Mom, dad, siblings, friends, coworkers, romantic partner)?
The feedback is for you currently. Does it ring true for your relationships as a child? Your past vs current romantic relationships?
Validity:Could any of the items possibly reflect anything other than attachment style?
What might people be thinking about when they are rating these items?
Are the items worded well? Do they succinctly capture one thing? Are any of them double barreled (asking you to rate multiple statements)?
Do people have the self-insight required to give accurate responses?
Is social desirability a concern (either fooling oneself, or the researcher in order to give responses that put the person in a more favorable light)?
Reliability:Is it possible to get different scores today vs. next week vs. a year from now vs. 10 years from now?
Do all of the items seem to be getting at the same thing, or do some of them stand out as odd in comparison to the rest?
