Title: Making Sense of the Contemporary Human Experience through Literature
While our authors are all undoubtedly of their historical and cultural moment, they are also writing stories about a human experience — and we are living the human experience, even if it looks different from their time.
For your second response paper, you’re going to consider one or two pieces of literature and explore how they resonate with something happening in our world today.
So, what does that mean?
Either select one piece that really speaks to our current moment (whether it’s about some aspect of contemporary identity, about work, about war, about family, etc) OR select two pieces that have a common theme or topic
Find an example of that theme in contemporary life, including specific evidence from reliable sources (New York Times, BBC, etc)
Write a 4-5 page thesis-driven paper that answers these questions:
How can this story/poem (these stories/poems) help us make sense of this contemporary situation? What does this text tell us about our place as humans in the global story?
This paper must include the following things:
A clear thesis statement at the end of the introductory paragraph
A minimum of five direct quotations in total from the literature that you’re discussing
Cited summaries of the relevant historical and cultural moment of the author(s)
Citations and summaries (or direct quotes from reliable news sources) about the contemporary issue

“Exploring Novel Interactions: Redefining Our Relationship with Computing Through Advanced Input and Embodied Sensing”
1. Give 3 directions of concepts showcasing a new way of interacting with computing using advanced Input and embodied sensing. Read instruction carefully below:
(Project Concept Think: How might we rethink our interaction with computers if we can embed sensors, cameras, microphones, tracking systems in environment, objects and bodies. Think beyond the able human body, consider bodies with different needs. VR headsets and Screens can be tricky as outputs, they usually define a particular kind of interaction that moves us away from experiencing social, and intuitive day to day ergonomics. Consider what inputs and outputs you could leverage to explore a novel and meaningful interaction. Context & Use Case: Consider daily actions we do domestically, socially, collectively, privately/ personally. How might we questions will help you guide this and I will be giving you feedback in our next session. Consider invisible information, or information larger or much smaller than our own body’s scale. Some examples of this include: Rethinking our relationship to Planetary movements: could you design a different “calendar” – what is the meaning of a calendar / time that you could poetically rethink?
Or our relationship to climate: How might we sense data that in a meaningful and embodied way?
Or our relationship to our family: How might we sense people’s interactions from afar?
Invisible data can become embodied, and we might be able to sense what is invisible using novel interactions. Go beyond what I shared and explore different contexts. Project outcome: The outcome will include showcasing a live demo/ prototype, a delightful and meaningful input and output, as well as your research on how you arrived here as well as list of actions you prioritized. )
