  • “Exploring the Rich Culture of India: A Journey Through History, Art, and Religion” India is a vast and diverse country, known for its colorful culture, ancient history, and rich traditions. As a content provider for a cultural resource company,

    In CultureAtlas, you have used a few journeys for your work. There was the MesoAmerican Indigenous sites, the Thirteen Capitals of the West Indies, and South American Country Capitals.  In each you explored what CultureAtlas thought were the most relevant pieces of information. At the same time you have been exploring a country of your choice.
    For your paper, you will take on the role of applying for a job as a “Content Provider” for a cultural resource company and you must present your choice of a journey for them to evaluate if you should come on board as their content provider. They need to see an example of your work to determine if you will be hired. To do that, they have asked you to create a journey of your own which they might consider for their use. This could be the country you have been exploring in the course, but it can be another one, if you’d like. You will present 6 aspects of the country to try and convince them that the journey you have chosen is worthy of putting it on their site or publication.
    First, you will present 3 aspects related to the country you have chosen, which are included in all of the company’s “journeys”.   These are 1) important geographical information about the country, 2) general history of the country, 3) and important historical figures from the country.  The last 3 are at your discretion. You can choose from the indigenous people of the country, architecture, archeology, literature, art, or music.  You should choose 3 topics you feel strongly should be included in the journey.  Please note: Because there are 6 topics, it does NOT mean only 6 paragraphs). Every topic can be a few paragraphs.
    The writing aspect of your paper should be about 1700 words (WORD, [NO PDFs Pages or Googledocs]12 pt. font. MLA format.). You may insert some images and some links, but these do not count for length of the paper. You may use the resources packaged up for you in CultureAtlas (in library, resources or their other sources) but you cannot cut and paste. You can also use outside resources that are reliable.
    THIS IS A PERSUASIVE PAPER. Whatever the information provided, you must convince the interviewing team that you should be hired. Therefore, you must convince them of the importance and relevance of the topics and information chosen. Although it is a written paper, think of it as presenting it to the team as part of your interview process.

  • Title: Technology Blackout Reflection

    PLEASE NOTE: The goal of this exercise is to give up some form of technology during this week. Do NOT rely on reflections from the past as memories can be imperfect and subject to bias.
    On July 30, 2012, the world’s biggest blackout took place in India when three major power grids collapsed.
    How do you think you would survive a power blackout?
    Although it may seem a little counter-intuitive, we are going to start our consideration of technology in modern society by removing technology from our modern lives.  This will lay an important foundation for the remainder of the course. This week, you are to pick one 24-hour period in which you avoid technology as much as possible. This includes the use of the following:
    * Smart phones
    * Cell phone and handheld devices
    * Computers, laptops, tablets
    * Television
    * Video games
    * Stove/Oven/Microwave
    * Dishwasher
    Obviously, if you must use any of these devices to perform your job or to keep children safe and healthy, you may do so. You may use kitchen appliances to prepare your meals (I don’t want your family to go hungry!) and turn your air conditioning or heat on to keep your family comfortable, but during your blackout day, avoid as much modern technology as possible while you are at home. Be very mindful of the technologies that you use or avoid during the day and how this impacts your ability to function. The objective of this exercise is to help you to appreciate the ways in which technology impacts your functioning in everyday life. If you have other family members, see if they will participate with you and use this opportunity to talk about how technology impacts your life as a family.
    After you have completed your blackout period, respond to the following questions in 2-4 paragraphs:
    * What technologies did you give up during your blackout?
    * What did you miss the most and why?
    * How did the absence of these devices impact you both negatively and positively in the home, workplace and other areas of your life?

  • Exploring the World of Theatre Designers: A Look at Southeastern Theatre’s Mona Jahani, Benjamin M. Norman, and Steve Schepker Out of the three designers at Southeastern Theatre, I am most drawn to the work of

    A large portion of your Unit III reading was about theatre designers.
    This exercise is about the people who create the world of the play.
    Southeastern Theatre has three designers:
    Mona Jahani – Costume Design – https://www.monajahani.com/
    Benjamin M. Norman – Lighting Design – http://www.benjamin-norman.com/Links to an external site.
    Steve Schepker – Scenic Design – http://steveschepker.com/Links to an external site.
    First, take a minute and look at the links each designers’ work. Consider that the designer is only designing in their area of expertise and they are only responsible for that element.
    Next, decide which area of design is most interesting to you and take a more in-depth look at their respective web pages.
    Finally, describe why you picked the designer. Why are you drawn to it? Would you like to try to design a show? Have you ever worked in the theatre? What is their best work? What is their weakest work? How does that work help tell the story? Does it set the tone and style of the production? Can you tell what the period, or the year, the production is set? Is the genre of the production revealed by the design?
    As always, feel more than free to give an honest opinion.
    Your thoughts should be in essay form, 250 words minimum.

  • “Empowering Incarcerated Women: The Importance of Education and Vocational Skills in Prison”

    Just as academic skills are needed to succeed in life, vocational skills are a must for inmates wanting to provide for themselves and their families (Guerrero, 2011). I would provide education classes to women in a prison facility because of the lack of access to women inside and outside of a prison. Women must work ten times harder than a man to get to the next level. Once a woman has children then the support to excel usually isn’t their either, so a woman must put their desires and dreams on hold. Women tend to deal with depression, lack of support, anxiety, and other delays more than some men. Therefore, women that did not have the opportunity or took another path to survive and ended up in prison should be given the chance to learn skills that will allow them to excel when released. The “right kind” of education works to both lower recidivism and reduce the level of violence. Moreover, appropriate education leads to a more humane and tolerable prison environment in which to live and work, not only for the inmates but also for the officers, staff and everyone else (Vacca, 2004). These courses would range from life, to academic, and vocational skills. At each level of courses, an inmate will be able to apply skills learned to their lives and potential job. In a study completed by student teachers and inmates, responses indicated that the women believe the course improves their ability to communicate with others more effectively, express themselves in writing, and increases their knowledge of life span development (Meyer, Harned, Schaad, Sunder, Palmer, & Tinch, 2016). My reasoning for having a variety of course is because basic education will hopefully give inmates are starting chance, but advanced learning and educational courses will give inmates a competitive chance at careers. They should be able to showcase their abilities in challenging courses because it is similar to challenging life choices as well.
