This essay involves doing “close readings” of two poems and offering a thoughtful interpretation that compares them while engaging some of the techniques, and readings I provided. The two poems I chose for this essay are: Four A.M. By Wislawa Szymborska / Awaking in New York By Maya Angelou
Guidelines:
Introduce the poems and explain in your own words how you connect them together. Offer images, lines, or words and their connotations to support your interpretation. And feel free to provide your personal identification with the poems (if you choose).
In your discussion, you must incorporate the ideas from the readings (Mary Oliver, Mark Yakich, and Elisa Gabbert). Be specific and quote directly from these sources.

Title: “Treatment vs. Punishment: Finding the Balance for Juvenile Crimes and Social Justice”
Explain the differences between the treatment and punishment concepts.
Examine types of treatment versus types of punishment for juvenile crimes.
Build the case for which one (i.e., treatment, punishment, or combination of both) you believe has the stronger position based on your research and the specific juvenile crime to which you will apply the concepts of treatment and punishment. The crime you choose can be violent (e.g., homicide, sexual assault, etc.) or non-violent (e.g., drug possession or sales, theft, etc.).
Select your city (or state) and one other jurisdiction in the United States.
Identify the prevailing thought in your city (or state) as well as the other jurisdiction you chose (i.e., treatment, punishment, or a combination).
Analyze which of the two jurisdictions has lower recidivism rates.
Identify whether the recidivism rate is the best indicator of success or failure of treatment versus punishment philosophy.
Explain why or why not.
Examine scholarly research on the most effective strategies for reducing juvenile crime rates.
Identify which strategy or combination of strategies the research appears to support.
Identify whether it is based on type of crime.
Explain whether a given strategy works best depending upon the nature of the crime (i.e., violent vs. non-violent).
Support which juvenile justice intervention strategy would be most effective to counter the crime or criminal justice issue based on your research.
Summarize which concept (i.e., treatment, punishment, or combination) best supports the overarching concept of social justice. -

“The Rise of Fascism and the Decline of Democracy in Europe: Exploring the Factors and Events of the Interwar Period”
1. Analyze the reasons for the success of the Nazi Party? Why does it succeed?
2. Formulate an explanation for the decreasing number of democratic governments in Europe during this period?
3. Respond to this discussion: After the conclusion of World War I, many countries were drastically changed by the outcome of the war. Specially The Treaty of Versailles helped the rise of fascism and the decrease of democracy within Europe. The treaty put the fault of the war completely on Germany’s shoulders and put extreme economic hardship on the people of Germany. This steeled the hearts of the people and gave rise to an even more aggressive version of nationalism within the country. (The Treaty of Versailles, 2024)
Fascism is an extreme form of nationalism that also promotes an economic system that reduces the difference in class among the people. The reason fascism grew at such a heavy pass is from the economic downturn that was the result of World War I. (The Rise of Fascism, 2024) Even before the war nations in Europe were already developing a common ideology of nationalism among the people. This was because of the militarism that was one of the causes of World War I. The economic hardship as well as the resentment caused by The Treaty of Versailles gave the fascist moment the foothold it needed to rise in the new political landscape post World War I.
4. Respond to this: An example for the decreasing number of democratic governments in the European during this period would be the Great Depression. It was a serve world wide economic depression during the early 1900s. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nation. It was the longest, deepest, and the most widespread dispersion of the 20th century. In the 21st century, the Great Depression is commonly used as an example of how far the world’s economic can decline. The Great Depression had a devastating effect in the countries being rich or poor. The tax revenue, profits and prices dropped while international trade plunged by more than 50%. Unemployment in the U.S rose to 25% and some countries as high as 30%. -
