  • “Symbolic Self-Representation: Exploring the Meaning of Objects in Western Culture”

OBJECTIVE: This is an introductory exercise. We’ll see how symbols not only represent each of us as an individual, but also how we use symbols in our everyday ‘western’ culture – and how these symbols can be interpreted in different ways, depending on our culture, age, and when and where we are in history! Even though this is a fun exercise, it is a good exercise in cross-cultural interpretation!!
Instructions: think of an object – any object – that represents who you are. Examples of what people have shared are: picture of a friend/family member; piece of sentimental jewelry; an electronic device (ie, phone); car; musical instrument; piece of clothing; cooking utensil or pic of food; sporting equipment; award or trophy – really, it can be anything! Please share a picture of it here. Answer the following questions: (1) what is the object? (2) a. What does your object say about you that is ‘obvious’? For example, if your object is a basketball, it says you like basketball. b. What does you object say about you that someone else may not know? For example, the basketball was given to you by your grandfather, who was the biggest influence on you and played in the NBA. (3) What does this object say about the culture and country you live in? If you were from a different country, would you understand what this object is? Would you misinterpret this symbol if you were in a different culture?

  • Exploring the Guidelines and Strategies for Effective Academic Writing In Sword’s chapters about academic writing, she delves into various aspects of what constitutes good college writing. As a student, I have encountered different perspectives on what makes for good academic writing,

No doubt about it: there are lots of different ideas about what academic writing should be like. For this post, please discuss Sword’s chapters about academic writing. You may address anything in these three chapters that captures your interest, but you should be sure to include at least some of the following topics:
In your classes, in other books, and in writing projects of your own, what have you learned about what college writing is supposed to be like?
What are some of the rules you tend to follow when it comes to college writing?
What is most interesting to you about what you read in these chapters?
What are some common mistakes made by academic writers?
What does good academic writing look like? What does good academic writing do?
Which qualities of style do you want to develop in your writing?
Which of Sword’s suggestions are you most likely to implement? What “tips” are you going to try?
    Length Requirement: 250 words minimum
Quotes Required: 2. Your response should include direct quotes from at least two of the required chapters. You may quote Sword and/or any of the authors she cites. After each quote, use parenthetical citations of the MLA variety. For example, after quoting a passage from the chapter, “your parenthetical citation should look like this” (Sword 44). This basic citation includes the author’s last name and the page number (no commas or abbreviations here). If you are quoting one of Sword’s examples, “it should look like this” (Stevenson qtd. in Sword 44). Here, we include the original author’s name and the abbreviation “qtd. in” as shorthand for “quoted in.”
For a handy guide to MLA citations and MLA format in general, see the Online Writing Lab
Conversation Requirement: At least 1 response to another student within 24 hours of the deadline (e.g., if the post is due Monday at 11:59pm, be sure to respond to another student by Tuesday at 11:59pm). Not responding to another student results in a reduction of 2 points. Responses need not be lengthy (i.e., not more than 75 words), but should be substantive and thoughtful. Affirm the quality of the post, relate additional ideas to the post, and/or expand upon the post.

  • Title: The Benefits and Risks of Forward Pricing Rate Agreements in Government Contracting

Refelctive writing to below. Provide a question to further the discussion.
“In government contracting, Forward Pricing Rate Agreements (FPRAs) are very useful because they set indirect rates ahead of time that can be used by both companies and government agencies to price contracts and changes to contracts over a certain period of time. These deals make the contracting process easier because there is no need for rate audits or analyses for every new contract or change. This cuts down on administrative work and speeds up the awarding and changing of contracts. Also, FPRAs provide stability and predictability, which helps both contractors and government bodies make budgets and plan their finances. This makes it easier for contractors to handle their funds as well as for the government to get a better idea of how much things will cost. Also, FPRAs make things easier for administrators because they avoid having to negotiate extra costs over and over again for each contract.
FPRAs generally come with some risks, though. Rates are set based on predictions, which might not always be right. Costs that are very different from what was planned can cause financial problems for both sides. If factors like the economy, regulations, or the way the provider does business change, the agreement may no longer be valid. This means that it needs to be constantly checked and possibly renegotiated. It can also be hard to make sure that the FPRA rules are followed and that oversight is kept up. If tracking isn’t done regularly, rates that are out of date or wrong could be used, which could lead to problems with finances and contracts.
FPRAs are still very important for planning programs, even with these risks. For long-term projects that need regular budgeting, they are especially important because they make it easier to make budgets by giving a simple structure for indirect costs. Better control of financial risks is made possible by FPRAs, especially for big projects with lots of secondary costs, because they offer fixed rates. A stable cost base for project plans and resource allocations is another way that FPRAs help with strategic planning. This makes decision-making and project management more informed.”
