The planning part is just the prewriting; you should have learned a process for that in ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302, but some of my students did not (I have some colleagues who just don’t bother to teach it, even though Texas mandates it), so most of the material in Unit 4 is about that. We teach five steps in planning a paper, and the project asks you to do all five steps with a pen in your hand and capture evidence that you did each step intentionally and consciously. So you will 
show how you came up with a topic (include some mind mapping) 
show how your came up with ideas to include in a paper about that topic (include more mind mapping or listing, and prepare an annotated bibliography to show what research you collected)
show how you thought about how to appeal to an audience for a paper like this one (fill out an Audience and Use Profile form describing the kind of person who would read your paper by choice, without having to be forced to read it)
show how you arrived at a thesis, or main point (with a short paragraph describing your thinking)
show how you will organize it (by completing an outline that shows the sequence of subtopics and where you will include your research).
Then you draft the paper from that planning, and revise it to create the final version, showing your revising on the draft. 
You include all the prewriting and the annotated bibliography and revisions of your rough draft in the portal for the project.
Submit the final copy of the paper with a list of Works Cited in the portal for the paper.

The
final project of the semester, I plan on focusing on “The Absolutely True Diary
of a Part- Time Indian”. My main focuses will be education and poverty.
Throughout the novel I felt like Junior’s story of his life on the reservation
was really centered around his quality of education and the little to no money
his family had. Junior expresses his struggle with necessities such as food, gas,
and clothes. It is not only his family that is facing poverty, the rest of the
Native American community. When taking a look at education, Junior was
originally attending his underfunded school which had outdated resources for
the students. All the students are not provided with equal opportunities in order
for them to be successful.
For the first resource I will be
using “Native American Healthcare, Bureaucracy, and Poverty: Institutional
Problems and Solutions”. Throughout this article it gives statistics on
poverty levels of Native Americans, it shares that they are at least
twenty-five percent of Native Americans who live below the poverty line. It
also expresses how living in poverty can affect many aspects of your
livelihood.  The second resource I will
be using “Native American Students Going to and Staying in Postsecondary
Education: An Intervention Perspective”.  The focus of this article is giving insight
about Native American students trying to pursue a degree and only a small
percent accomplish this goal. It describes how this can be related to their
education before entering a college or university. Both of these articles will
help add to the focus of what my final project will be about.

In Ginsberg’s Howl, the speaker is serving as a prophet, warning us of danger. Near the end of the first part of the poem, he describes poetry as a kind of alchemy, a magic process  for converting base metals into precious metals. What truths or insights about modern life/art are captured in these pictures of his artist friends?

The assignment is described as such, ” For this essay, you will argue what you feel is the primary meaning of your chosen text (either Pride and Prejudice, Brave New World, or The Catcher in the Rye) and show how this meaning is revealed in the work.  You can choose from many different literary elements for this paper—such as theme, plot, characterization, the use of literary/rhetorical devices, tone, symbols or motifs, etc.—or you can explore a critical “problem” in one of these texts—a frequently discussed and unresolved issues in the literary criticism.   But ultimately your paper should argue an overall point:  both WHAT the text’s key meaning is and HOW this meaning is revealed.”
I chose to write about Catcher in the Rye which is the only source you need to quote from, because you can choose anything to write about the thesis should be along the lines of this, “The purpose of Holden’s story is to preserve one’s childhood as long as possible as the preservation of childhood is also the preventative means of becoming a “phony”” This is what the entire paper should revolve around, use evidence from the book to back this up. VERY IMPORTANT to adequately analyze the text, my teacher wants us to take a VERY close look into the language of the quotes, as in how specific, individual words convey a deeper meaning and one that relates to the Thesis. try an use evidence from across the book but don’t over-quote. Lastly, I have some examples of what I mean by the thesis which I will lay out for you to expand on with evidence. First, Holden hates New York as it epitomizes American consumerism related to adulthood and growing up.  Holden’s purpose is to be the “Catcher in the Rye” as he wants to keep them from growing up and becoming phony like himself. This brings me to a big point, Holden himself wants to prevent kids from growing up as his childhood was cut short by the death of his brother Allie. In this shortcut childhood, Holden had to grow up and try and be a phony to fit in but ultimately hates himself and those around him for it. He also is more distant from his brother DB as he is the epitome of consumerism-driven adulthood, of the phonies, and what’s phonier than acting as someone else at the movies? Lastly, Holden has such a hard time fitting in as he can’t even accept himself. Write this essay with one indtorduction paragraph to set up thesis then CEW, claim, evidence, warrant, body paragrpahs and end with conclusion paragraph. Thank you!

First, read the article “Why Do Human Beings Do Good Things? The Puzzle of Altruism”. In this article, Steve Taylor argues that people are capable of “pure” altruism, meaning that they are not motivated by any selfishness. The word ALTRUISM means being unselfish and concerned for others even when it may hurt us or not be in our own best interest.
Second, read the short story “A&P” by John Updike. In his story, John Updike writes about a young man who takes a stand. Is it altruism? 
Third, think about this prompt.
Using examples from BOTH texts respond to the following: 
Do you agree with Steve Taylor’s argument that there is such a thing as “pure” altruism? 
Do you think the narrator’s actions in John Updike’s “A&P” are an example of pure altruism or is the narrator acting selfishly for his own benefit?
Be sure to include evidence from both texts to support your claims. 

The journal should be about 6-7 pages (typed). It would be your own reader’s response on at least 5-6 reading assignments. It will be assessed on the clarity of expression, originality, and the effectiveness with which you convey your appreciation (or lack of) the material at hand. You should convey the impression that you have carefully read and understood the material.
You can record personal impressions to selections you read, sum up your understanding of a reading in a few sentences, comment on readings that gave you trouble, free write in response to study questions you invent, or reflect on your reading process (for example, record how long you read in one sitting and what conditions make it easier or more difficult to read.) You can also give an account of what you were thinking as you were reading a given text.
