Title: Historical Issues in Human Research: Lessons Learned for Current Practices
You have just been hired as a Research Assistant for a hospital where you will be working with a team that conducts human research. As a part of your training, you are expected to refresh your understanding of historical issues in human research and how they relate to current research practices. Your supervisor has asked you to create a PowerPoint to demonstrate your understanding of historical issues in human research based. Your presentation will be based on one of the following articles:
Tuskegee Syphilis Study
Mackey-Kallis, S. (2019). Tuskegee experiment. Salem Press Encyclopedia.
Henrietta Lacks
Gabbay, F. H. (2012). An American woman and the right to health. Psychiatry: Interpersonal & Biological Processes, 75(2), 113–119.
Nazi Medical Experiments
Naming the victims of Nazi medicine. (2017). The Lancet, 389(10085), 2182-2183.
Thalidomide
Thomas, K. (2020, Mar 24). Thalidomide’s legacy: [Correction]. New York Times
Instructions
Create a PowerPoint presentation that examines historical issues in human research and how this relates to current research practices. Select one of the articles listed above on the following historical research projects: Tuskegee Syphilis Study, Henrietta Lacks, Nazi Medical Experiments, or Thalidomide Trials.
The presentation should address the following:
Define ethics in human research and identify how ethics are presented in the article.
Explain the background and hypothesis of the historical research project.
Explain the role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and note examples of protections for research participants. If there was no IRB, explain how having one could have helped ensure ethical standards were maintained.
Using current principles outlined by the IRB that govern human research, identify the principles that were violated. Provide an explanation regarding the violations and how these violations would have been avoided using current research practices.
The presentation should be visually appealing with colors, graphics, and key words.
Use the notes section below each slide to write the details of what would be said during a live presentation. This allows you to show your understanding and critical thinking skills to the instructor. -
Title: Lake Observation and Analysis: Exploring the Relationship Between Temperature, Oxygen Levels, and Fish Distribution
This week you will conduct a lake observation then write up a report describing your findings and answering the questions from the PowerPoint (listed below). This should be a 2-3 page paper (not including the title page and references page) and is two-fold. In the first half of your paper, you will conduct a brief lab observation and form a hypothesis for the results you find. In the second half of your paper, you will answer questions from the Where Are the Fish? ppt.
First, set aside two days to conduct your lab experiment. Go to a local lake or pond and check the temperature of the water on two different days. Observe things like the color of the water (clear, stained, green), what types of plants are growing in the water (emergent or submerged vegetation), what kinds of organisms are evident. Scoop up some of the bottom substrate in an ice cream bucket, put some lake vegetation in the bucket as well. What are some of the kinds of living organisms you see and what are their sizes? In your paper, you will write a few paragraphs describing your observations and forming a testable hypothesis from the information.
Alternative Option: If the lakes in your area are still frozen then go to the internet and on YouTube view the short video entitled Pond Ecology https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gszr5vVtp58Links to an external site.It shows many of the kinds of organisms common in ponds and lakes.
Next, read through this week’s PowerPoint: Where Are the fish? After viewing the PowerPoint, answer the questions at the end of the PowerPoint (also below). You may find Figure 3.38 from the text to be of some help.
Why is the temperature warmer at the bottom than at the top?
What happens with oxygen levels as depth increases?
What would cause the oxygen level to change like this?
Why were no fish caught below eight feet under the ice?
As you work through the lab activity this week, take some time to watch the video – Global Lake Ecological Observatory NetworkLinks to an external site. There are a number of groups who routinely monitor lakes and information on basic things like temperature and oxygen can be valuable.
Please follow the APA Guidelines for Student PapersLinks to an external site. when completing this assignment.
Week 1 Lab Activity Report is due Sunday 11:59 p.m. (CST).
Lab Report Format
As you write up your 2-3 page report, follow this format:
1. Start with a brief introduction to the topic. Consider, Why is this topic important/why should we study this? Provide brief background information on the importance of topic of study.
2. Describe your initial observations of the lake. What did you find?
3. Form a brief hypothesis for the results that you found at the lake. Why are things the way that they are? This should be a testable hypothesis, so that even if you don’t pursue an answer yourself, it is a measurable postulation.
4. Next, answer the ppt question(s) addressed by the lab in several cohesive paragraphs.
Remember to include a title page and (if needed) a reference page. You need to use terminology and course concepts in your report. -
Title: Understanding Queer Identity Development through a Developmental Systems Perspective
Answer the discussion questions and answer using the sources given:
(I have roughly done question one, but some edits would be nice)
1. Reflect on each of the three domains (biological, cognitive/linguistic, and sociocultural) of the developmental systems perspective.
A. Share or create an example that represents queer identity development in each domain.
Biological: Biologically, the development of queer identity can be influenced by genetic factors, hormonal influence, as well as the development of the brain. There has also been a research in regards to twins and the presence of genetic markers may be the genetic components to queer identity. (Rosario, Schrimschaw, & Hunter , 2008).
Cognitive: In the cognitive domain, the engagement with their own feelings and experiences, possibly continued with some self-reflection, can help with understanding and accepting one’s identity. The process of exploration within the cognitive and linguistic domain can highly impact the depth of understanding towards the queer identity. (Lev, 2004)
Sociocultural: The navigation within the societal attitudes and norms has a great dynamic play towards the queer identity in one’s understanding and acceptance. The supportiveness of the community towards the community plays a big role as well in the way that people are able to express themselves; and from my own perspective of queer community in Indonesia is highly shamed which leads to many of my fellow queer friends to still be in the closet. (D’Aguelli, 1994).
2. Throughout the quarter we have contrasted dichotomous approaches to analysis with systems approaches.
A. Explain the value of understanding characteristics on a spectrum (as opposed to dichotomous/reductionist thinking) for understanding queer identity development.
Queer identity
B. Explain how it applies to either the wheel of privilege or the gender unicorn
3. We have discussed a number of examples demonstrating the value of a lifespan approach to development.
A. Why is it important to take a lifespan approach to queer identity development?
B. What is an example of plasticity within queer identity development?
4. Aging isn’t all doom and gloom.
A. What does “the paradox of aging” refer to?
B. Identify and explain two abilities that improve with older age?
C. How might your attitude towards aging influence your health in later life?
D. What are “blue zones”? What commonalities do we see between blue zones?
5. Consider Rowe and Kahn’s traditional model of successful aging.
A. How do Rowe and Kahn characterize successful aging and what are the critiques of this model?
B. Identify three factors from the lecture that can assist successful aging with a chronic disease, like Parkinsons, and explain why they might be helpful? -
