Overview
For the Week 2 activity, you selected a health services organization (HSO) and then developed five research questions to gain a better understanding of the financial condition of your chosen HSO; its budget preparation process; and fiscal planning strategies related to the financial management of the organization. For this assignment, you will provide thorough responses to each question and report your key findings.
Instructions
Using the HSO you identified in the Week 2 activity, use the Strayer Library and other reputable sources to locate publicly available financial information that will provide you with the answers to the five questions you developed in Week 2.
You will then write a three-page paper in which you include each of the following components:
Develop an introduction to your chosen healthcare organization.
The name of the selected organization and background information, such as its location, size, focus, services provided, demographics of patients served, for-profit or nonprofit status, et cetera.
Indicate whether the organization has a separate finance or business department and, if so, who is responsible for the department.
Any other information that may help explain the chosen organization. For example, is it unique in how its finances are managed? If so, how?
Develop research-based answers to the five previously created questions.
A response to each of the five questions you created in Week 2. This should include specific information pertaining to the chosen healthcare organization’s budget preparation process, fiscal planning strategies, and how the financial condition of the organization is routinely monitored and corrective actions are taken when necessary.
Assess any differences and similarities between what you have learned from the textbook, videos, and other readings with what you have learned in your research.
This is the section of the paper where you assess any differences between what you have learned in this course and what is reflected in your research. This is also an opportunity to identify connections between cost and quality and explore the interplay of performance improvement, regulatory compliance, provider relationships, and payors. Keep in mind that the background and context of the organization play a role in how these pieces fit together.

Explain how considerations about clients’ worldviews, including their spirituality or religious convictions, might affect your interactions with them.
As a social worker it is important to be considerate of a client’s background, both spirituality and culture. Spirituality is defined as ‘one’s values, beliefs, mission, awareness, subjectivity, and experience, sense of purpose and direction, and kind of striving towards something greater than oneself” (Zastrow et al., 2019).  Religion is a set of beliefs and practices of a specific organized religious institution. The values of a social worker to recognize the central importance of human relationships. Social workers should also respect the inherent dignity and worth of a person (National Association of Social Workers, n.d.)
Provide at least two specific examples.
An example of consideration for a client would be one that has dietary restricts per their religion.  Both Judaism and Islam do not eat pork. They do not eat any meat that is considered to be unclean. This also included unclean fish, birds, mammals, and other creatures (Brondz, 2018).
Another example would be Hinduism and Buddhism that believe in reincarnation. They believe that the soul of every person and plan is eternal and returns after death in another form. Most other religions believe that when you due you ascend into the afterlife (Somer et al., 2011).
In addition, explain one way your own spirituality or religious convictions might support your work with a client, and one barrier it might present.
I was raised in the Catholic Church, I consider myself to be a Christian not so much as a Catholic. When working with a client that is Catholic, I would not allow my personal feelings about the church dictate how I would talk to the client.  I would be respectful of what they are saying and how they are saying it.  A barrier that could present itself is that they may follow the doctrine in regards to same-sex marriage, abortion, and sex before marriage, etc., I would want to make sure that even though I may disagree that I respect what their personal views are on those same topics.
 Finally, share one strategy for applying an awareness of spirituality to social work practice in general.
A strategy for applying awareness of spirituality to social work practice in general would be to establish their comfort level discussing spirituality.  A social worker would need to be self-aware and possibly have additional training.  They will want to remain culturally competent and have boundaries so that they are able to focus on their clients’ needs and not try to push their personal believes onto a client (Pomeroy et al., 2021).

Considering a client’s worldviews, including their spirituality and religious convictions, helps me understand them better.  Worldview concerns people’s perceptions of the world around them and how they fit into that world (Zastrow et al., 2019).  Understanding that people have different worldviews requires looking beyond the slim boundaries of our daily existence.  For social workers, the worldview perspective requires developing an appreciation of differences instead of being fearful or feeling opposition towards them.  Spirituality and religion are separate concepts that must be considered when social workers assess human behavior.  Determining a client’s spiritual beliefs and religion can provide sources of empowerment.  It is essential to consider both spirituality and religion as a source of strength for clients, but it is just as important for social workers not to impose their own values and beliefs on clients.  Having an open mind about worldviews, spirituality, and religion is the key I use to engage clients who have diverse perspectives.    
One example is a client who is experiencing withdrawal and high anxiety levels from stopping drug use and may turn to praying to God as a coping mechanism.  As a social worker with a client in this situation, I would consider this a strength and support him in building resiliency, despite my own beliefs that may differ.  A second example would be a single female client who is pregnant in her mid-forties with two grown children who have left the home.  She is a high-risk pregnancy, and it is still early enough for her to consider abortion as an option.  She is considering an abortion due to her high risk, financial situation, and lack of support. My job as her social worker is to provide resources and education on her options, not to judge or impose any of my beliefs on her.    
In addition, explain one way your own spirituality or religious convictions might support your work with a client and one barrier it might present.
One way my own spirituality or religious convictions may support my work with a client is to celebrate different faiths and practices.  I am more of a spiritual person and have diverse beliefs myself, so it is easy for me to keep an open mind.  One barrier would be working with a client who is very strong in their religious convictions and is not open to a grounding technique like meditation to help with anxiety.  This situation would require flexibility for me to discover other techniques that may help this client relax while remaining within their comfort zone.    
Finally, share one strategy for applying an awareness of spirituality to social work practice in general.
The NASW Standards for Cultural Competence in Social Work Practice emphasizes the ethical responsibility of social workers to engage in culturally competent practice and interventions that address the importance of religion and spirituality in clients’ lives (Limb et al., 2018).  One strategy I would like to share for applying awareness of spirituality to social work practice, in general, is provided in the NASW Code of Ethics under standard 1.05, Cultural Competence.  All of the guidelines under the code should be adhered to. However, the one that stood out to me when considering a strategy was 1.05 (a), “Social workers should demonstrate understanding of culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths that exist in all cultures.”  Being a culturally competent social worker who recognizes the strengths of spirituality can empower clients along their path to well-being.

Najeeb
Najeeb is a 72-year-old Pakistani American who immigrated to the United States 40 years ago. He has two grown daughters, Nasrin and Mira, who live in nearby communities with their families. His wife, Maryam, passed away approximately 10 years ago after a long illness. Najeeb and one of his daughters served as her caregivers during that time. Najeeb currently lives alone in the house he and his wife bought, in a predominantly Pakistani American neighborhood.
Najeeb owned and ran a popular news stand in the city until 5 years ago, at which point he retired and sold the business. Najeeb disclosed that he enjoyed operating the news stand because he had “a sense of purpose” and “lots of people to talk to.” Since retiring, much of his social life has been focused on his Muslim faith and his family, with worship at the mosque and visits with his daughters and grandchildren. His routine has also included daily walks around the neighborhood for fresh air and communion with others.
Recently, Najeeb has begun to experience health-related concerns which have impacted his ability to walk and socialize with peers. Najeeb disclosed that religion is a big part of his life; however, he now has limited ability to ambulate, so he cannot engage in daily ritual prayer in the manner he is used to. He also cannot easily get to the mosque, as he does not own a car, cannot walk, and public transportation is difficult for him to navigate. According to Najeeb’s daughters, these mobility concerns have had a major impact on his psychological functioning. Nasrin and Mira have recognized a change in their father’s demeanor, describing him as “depressed” and “hopeless.” They encouraged Najeeb to reach out to the local agency on aging for assistance.

 
For the Week 3 Assignment, you will be expected to investigate the financial condition of a health services organization (HSO) of your choosing. In preparation for the Week 3 Assignment, you are expected to submit a Microsoft Word document explicitly addressing the following:
Utilizing the Strayer Library or other credible sources, you are to identify an HSO. Once identified, in a paragraph, share the name of the organization and provide a high-level overview of what kind of organization it is (e.g., home health, hospice, tertiary care facility, long-term care, subacute care, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, etc.) and the segments of the population that it supports.
You will want to be sure there is plenty of information available about the organization, particularly financial information. This means you’ll likely need to choose a large organization that is required to make financials public.
One of the best ways to understand a company’s financial health is to review its financial statements, including the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement. These statements provide information about the company’s assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses, and cash flow. You can typically find these statements in a company’s annual report if non-profit.
For publicly traded HSOs, regulatory filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) can provide additional information about the company’s financial performance, management, and risks. These filings include the annual report, 10-K, 10-Q, and proxy statement
To gain a better understanding of the financial condition of your chosen health services organization, its budget preparation process, and fiscal planning strategies, you will develop five questions that you will answer as part of your investigation. Ideally, these would be questions you would ask a management official responsible for the financial planning of the organization. It is important that you provide a brief explanation for why you chose to include each of the 5 questions.
Think about questions that will give you greater insight into what the company looks for when preparing their annual budget, their fiscal planning strategies, and how they monitor their financial condition throughout the year and make necessary adjustments.
Optional: You may also choose to use these questions to interview a financial manager within a healthcare organization. The interview would then be the source of your information instead of the research.
