  • Cultural Artifact Speech: Exploring the Symbolic Importance of Objects in Different Cultures

Here is a verbatim of the overview given by my instructor
[THERE WILL BE MORE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN IF WE ARE TO MOVE FOWARD]
    “Overview:
Within each culture, there are many objects or artifacts that hold deep symbolic importance. These artifacts might represent an important historic event, reflect deeply held values, be part of important rituals or traditions, or serve as a reminder of a key part of life within that culture. The purpose of this speech assignment is to learn more about each other and the cultures represented in our classroom and our society, as well as to gain practice developing and delivering a speech. This speech is also intended to help break down stereotypes of difference and to help us see people from cultures other than our own as unique individuals.
Your cultural artifact speech should teach us about (1) the artifact that is the focus of the speech, (2) the culture from which the artifact comes by sharing how the artifact represents important values and traditions in that culture, and (3) who you are as a speaker. YOU MAY CUSTOMIZE YOUR MAIN POINTS. For the purposes of this speech, you are welcome to choose any culture that you belong to; for example, a few of the cultures that other students have shared about in the past include Peruvian culture, nail art culture, breakdancing culture, Mayan culture, marathoner culture, motorcycle club culture, music culture, deaf culture, Latina cooking culture, foodie culture, baseball culture, and many, many more.
For this speech, you will need to choose a physical item that is readily available to you that is an important part of and represents important values in your culture. Explain how the object represents the culture and the culture’s values, not just how the object is used within the culture. You should decide whether your speech should include a demonstration of the use of the item. In the past students have chosen to include a few of the following demonstrations: how to braid hair, how to get out of quicksand, how to perform CPR, how to do salsa dancing, how to breakdance.
    Research:
For this speech, most of the knowledge will come from things that you already know. A lot of the information about the artifact is likely to have been passed down to you from your family and culture. Thus, you are not required to use other sources for this speech.
However, you might find it helpful to do additional research to better understand the events or artifact about which you are speaking. You might choose to interview family members or others with knowledge of and experience with your topic. You might also choose to do research at the library and find reliable webpages with information about your topic. If you choose to do additional research, you should be careful to cite your sources in your written outline
and in your speech presentation. See your textbook for more information about finding and citing sources.
Notes: While planning your speech, you will develop a full sentence outline
. When you give your speech, you should use only one notecard with a keyword outline.”

  • “Exploring the Benefits and Challenges of Working with Others: A Group Discussion Activity”

    Discussion Four: Working With Others
So many problems we need to tackle in our day-to-day life are done in collaboration with others.
When it comes to work, group problem solving with colleagues and coworkers happens everyday, and problem solving activities are a great way to practice many relevant skills that can be applied in the workplace.
It’s great to be able to work on complex tasks with a team as they can help to:
    Develop cohesion and build relationships in the team;
    Practice communication and create trust;
    Understand how each other thinks;
    Teach strategies to overcome obstacles in the way of achieving goals;
    Foster creativity;
    Encourage negotiation amongst team members;
    Help lateral thinking.
While this discussion activity is quite simple, it reflects many of the benefits of working with others, being open-minded, and listening to the ideas and suggestions of others.
    …………………..
For this activity to work properly, it is very important that you follow the directions closely. As with the other discussions, you are required to make an initial post before you will be able to see the posts of others in your group.
ALSO, the scoring and timing for this activity is a bit different than for previous discussions because you are working with others.
    Monday – Wednesday —
Initial post — one two-digit number, with an explanation of how you reached that answer. (100+ substantive words; 10 points)
    Thursday – Sunday —
Response posts — 1. Review the numbers posted by your teammates and post replies to each asking clarifying questions with the goal of understanding how each came to their answer to “how many squares?” Can your group reach a consensus answer to that question? (50+ substantive words each; 15 points total)
AND THEN 2. Post a one-page, single-spaced essay in which you discuss how the differences in group member answers and explanation of how they were reached reveals challenges and benefits of working in groups and teams to the ASSIGNMENT FOLDER (20 points).
    HOW MANY SQUARES?
    ……………….
REMEMBER: For this activity to work properly, it is very important that you follow the directions closely (see posting directions at the top of this discussion assignment). As with the other discussions, you are required to make an initial post before you will be able to see the posts of others in your group.
LABEL WHICH POST IS WHICH, ONCE THE INITIAL POST IS DONE I WILL SEND YOU REPLYS SO YOU CAN FINISH (THURSDAY-SUNDAY)

  • “Uncovering the Layers: Exploring Self-Disclosure and Social Media through Social Penetration Theory”

I need 5 individual paragraphs 1 for each source. I will provide the sources as they are within my courses preferences. I also have the assignments rubric that I will send. The assignment is using soelf disclosure and social media using social penetration theory.

  • “The Power of Persuasion: A Comparative Analysis of Esoteric Forms in Print Advertising”

Your assignment is to compare “competing” persuasive
strategies to determine which is more effective to your partner.  You will choose two print ads
that you believe display “competing” persuasive strategies discussed in that
module.  This means that these topics
must be related somehow, and it should be difficult to do both strategies at
one time.  For example, you might see
ethos, logos, and pathos being discussed in Module 1.  This could be a good topic because they are
similar ideas and one of them could be featured over another in any given
ad.  Obviously, these three things will
almost always occur together, so the idea of “competing” strategies is open for
interpretation.  As long as they are
related by topic (i.e. different theories, different parts of one theory,
similar topic, etc.), then I will be happy with the topic.
You will send the two ads to your partner with enough time
to get a response from them and write your paper before the module closes.  Your partner will respond with a short email
telling you which they personally found to be more persuasive and why (without
going into much detail).  Your partner
will only speak about how they feel, they do not need to explain why they chose
    it from an academic perspective.
I will be grading based on these things:
    1.
    Your knowledge of the topic
    2.
Your application of the topic in what ads you
    have chosen
    3.
That your chosen ads are targeted toward your
    partner
    4.
That you include your partner’s response in the
paper (so I can see if I have the same interpretation of their response)
    5.
How well you explain your partner’s response
    through an academic lens
    6.
    Various other formatting and organizational
issues – that you use APA formatting, that you do not write over 2 pages, that
your ads fit the module where you submitted the paper, that you’ve included
your print ads (and that you’ve used print ads), etc.
Your papers will be in three parts:
PART I: You will describe the topic that you have chosen and
describe how each ad you chose illustrates that idea.  You will include each ad in an appendix at
the end of the paper, after the references.
You will also describe your partner and how these ads are targeted
    toward them.
PART II: You will quote, word for word, exactly what your
    partner said.  Your partner’s response
should be no more than a few sentences, and it should not speak in academic
terms – it should simply be a quick statement describing how they felt about
each ad and which they found more persuasive.
PART III: You will explain why you believe that your partner
felt this way, using concepts from the book and any other references that you
    see fit.
The Topic I’ve chosen is Esoteric Forms of Persuasion. You can make up the perspective of   the other person (partner) for the assignment.

  • Title: The Illusion of Connection: How Social Media Has Failed to Improve Human Communication

Your argument paper is a 5-6 paragraph (500-750 word) essay which follows the pro-con-refute format detailed in the pdf below. Your position should be stated clearly in a straightforward thesis at the end of your introduction. For this essay, you are answering a somewhat controversial question, one that is either “yes” or “no.” Examples of such questions are “should uniforms in schools be enforced?”, “should the death penalty be legal?”, and “should classes be tracked by level?” In all of these cases, either side can be argued and proven to be correct. It is essential that you address the counterarguments presented by the opposing side, and then refute them strongly. Research and sources for this paper are optional; of course, if you do use sources, you must cite them accurately.
Topic is has social media improved human communication? Essay is topic is that, no, it has not improved human communication.
    Please use 2-3 sources.

  • “The Silent Epidemic: The Dangers of Prescription Drug Abuse and Misuse”

This is an informative public speech that has to be 4-6 min. I’d like the topic to relate to something about the dangers of prescription drug abuse and misuse.

  • “Conflict Management and Cultural Dynamics: An Analysis of Interpersonal Conflict in Film/TV” Reality Television and the Dynamics of Interpersonal Relationships: An Analysis of Communication Behaviors

    This assignment is intended
to assess the ability of students to do the followin
    g:
    1.     identify and describe types of interpersonal conflict.
    2.     compare and contrast various methods for managing conflict.
    3.     identify and describe destructive and productive
behaviors people exhibit when in conflict; and apply appropriate concepts towards
the goal of making recommendations for approaching conflict more effectively.
    Using the material from the
textbook, you must write a 5 – 7-page essay (approximately) in which you
provide an analysis on a specific scene or moment of conflict, 2 – 5 minutes or
so of verbal conflict (approximately), not the entire show or movie.  You may refer to any idea from the text, use Chapters 6, 2, and 8 in your textbook
as the primary text-based resources for responding to this assignment, and as a
guide for how to apply the concepts identified in the sections below to a film
or television show of your own choosing.
    You must consider what film
or TV show might function well as a way to perform a case study of
interpersonal conflict between two characters in the film using conceptual
material in the textbook as the basis for your analysis.  Analyze the communicative behavior of the
people in a conflict episode based upon the following topics and conceptual
areas, and write your paper accordingly:
    1.     If conflict occurs
between people during interaction, where there are real or perceived incompatible goals, scarce resources, or opposing
    views.  Identify and describe
which of these factors (and there could be more than one) the conflict appears
to be about. Define what conflict is through your example, and describe what
each person is doing and saying to make the conflict as being situated in incompatible
goals, scarce resources, or opposing views?
    2.     Identify, define, and describe which conflict
style or styles each participant seems to engage in most consistently
(describe what each person is doing and saying that marks his or her behavior
as the style defined in the textbook).
    a.      Competing?
    b.     Avoiding?
    c.      Accommodating?
    d.     Collaborating?
    e.      Compromising?
    3.
    Using the
material in Chapter 6 and/or Chapter 8 regarding culture and conflict, identify
and describe any possible sources of conflict or aspects of culture that might
be creating challenges to resolving conflict between the participants.  In what ways do the participants’ methods for
    doing facework during conflict
    create problems with conflict resolution?
Do the participants display different cultural tendencies along the
dimensions of individualism or collectivism, and is this influencing
    conflict dynamics?  Other cultural
    issues?
    4.     Explain what specific strategies for handling conflict better you would
recommend each person adopt to manage more effectively this conflict or future
    conflict?
    a.      Can you identify and possible conflict patterns in the episode you observed?  Are there any perception issues (see Chapter 2), serial arguing, mindreading, etc..)?  Suggest how to overcome them.
    b.     Offer some specific negotiation steps and skills the participants might use to handle
their conflict more effectively in the future.
    c.      How should each participant be supportive of each
    other?
    d.     How should each participant strive to “save face” for
    the other?
    ***Not all the above
categories may be relevant depending on the conflict you observe.  What specific recommendations from the
textbook would offer the people in this conflict so they might have handled it
    more effectively?
    Your
paper should not only address each of the content areas identified above, you must also construct the paper such that
it is structured to include an introduction, body and conclusion, and in
which you include any visual data such as film segments or examples that would
help support your conclusions or convey your ideas.  Obviously, the body of your paper should be
devoted to addressing items 1-4 above.
You should also construct your paper keeping in mind the general
guidelines for papers outlined in the syllabus.
    *****HINT:
Think about the potentially rich source of data you might find on almost any
given episode of almost any Reality
Television show in which the relationships between the people on the show
are the main or secondary focus of the show.
Seriously folks, there is more than an abundance of recorded conflict
interaction out there from which to choose.
    Specific criteria for
    evaluating Assignment #2:
    ·
    Does the student
respond effectively to each section of the assignment by identifying, defining,
and applying the concepts related to each section?
    ·
Follow the Grading Scale for Papers as a resource
for how to construct your paper.
    ·
    How consistently
do you focus on communication in your responses to the assignment?
    ·
    How much detail
do you provide in your use of examples to support responses and your
connections between course related concepts and the behavior and communication
of the characters in the film or TV show?
    ·
How accurately do you apply course concepts?
    ·
    How professional
is the overall organization of ideas, structure of the paper, spelling,
punctuation, grammar, etc.? (Again, use the Grading
Scale for Writing Assignments as a basic guide for your paper).
    ·
    *****YOU MUST
DEFINE EACH CONCEPT ACCORDING TO THE WAY YOU INTEND TO USE IT (I.E.,
OPERATIONALIZE). Therefore, WHENEVER, you introduce and use a course related
concept in your paper you must define it (and yes that may mean quoting your
    authors).
    ·
    WRITE YOUR
INDIVIDUAL PAPER AS THOUGH YOU WERE WRITING TO AN AUDIENCE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE
    CONCEPTS.
    ·
Cite your source EACH time you quote the author(s), and/or
if you paraphrase ideas from the article.
    Do NOT plagiarize!  You
MUST integrate the source material into your paper, (i.e., reference your
sources IN THE TEXT of your document).
    ·
Use correct MLA or APA methods for quoting your
    authors and citing your source(s).
Create a bibliography and cite your source(s) in the text.  DO NOT Plagiarize!  Acts of plagiarism will result in an “F” for
this assignment, and you may be charged with academic misconduct.
    ·
    ***If you
do not meet this criterion, you will fail the assignment and/or be charged with
    academic misconduct.

  • “Exploring Cultural Realities: An Intercultural Communication Analysis of Victoria & Abdul”

    Book Project Resource
Basu, S. (2017). Victoria & Abdul: The true story of the Queen’s closest confidant.New York, NY: Vinatge Books. ISBN: 978-0-525-43441-2.
There are many factors that separate cultures, ethnicities, and races. While it is true that history, language, religion, food, etc., separate us, there are many factors in which we can find commonality with individuals that come from an ethnic group different than ours. To grow our capacity to communicate cross-culturally it is important that we explore those similarities (while being mindful of the differences) and interact with individuals that live in different cultural realities that our own. When we learn about someone else’s cultural realities and reflect on how those realities relate to our own, we can become better communicators.
In this Book Project Assignment, you will read a book of your choosing (from the list providedin the Resources section). You will explore the book from intercultural communication theory(as it has been discussed in the textbook reading and class discussions) and will focus on cultural features reflected in the book in comparison with your own. You will explore the context in which the book was written and how that context shaped the worldview reflected by the book.
    Instructions
At the beginning of the semester, you will select a book from the list provided in the syllabus. You will read, evaluate, and interact with the book’s cultural perspective and worldview using intercultural communication theory as it has been discussed in the textbook reading and class discussions. This is not a book review but a critical reading of the book from an intercultural communication theory perspective. You will submit the completed Book Project Assignmentthrough the designated link.
The Book Project Assignment must include:
    • The Book Project Assignment paper must be at least 1,500 words.
    • The Book Project Assignment paper must be in current APA format (including, but not limited to an abstract, introduction, conclusion, and in-text citations)
    • The Book Project Assignment paper must include at least eight (8) references from the course readings, the Bible, and pertinent outside sources.
