  • “Advocating for Change: A Comparative Analysis of Activist Groups and Their Methods for Social Change”

    Assignment 2: Research Project
***See attached paper over the BLM movement. ***
Notice the structure of the essay and its layout. You will follow this format for your assignment. An important component of sociology (some argue the most important) is using that which we learn for social change. An example of this would be the BLM movement, the Civil Rights Campaign, the Black Panthers, the Feminist Movement, both the First and Second Waves, the Poor People’s Campaign (PPC), and ANTIFA. Some groups go about promoting social change in various ways. During the Civil Rights Movement, MLK stressed the importance of peaceful protest. While advocating for economic equality The PPC went a step further and activists across the nation took part in acts of civil disobedience (think of the lunch counter sit-ins). The Black Panthers, led by Malcolm X, took a more direct approach and pledged to fight for the freedoms they deserved. Today, Antifa is similar to the Panthers in that they are willing to fight for equality. Different groups with different methods are advocating for the same cause. Equality. The BLM movement advocates for peaceful protest; however, ANTIFA members are often spotted at BLM events to provide protection. Women involved with the first wave feminist movement had experiences that those of the second wave feminist movement did not. Much of this is attributed to the violence committed against women. If we observe these groups in their entirety, we can get a clearer picture of activism and the process of social change.
    FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT:
Choose a group that is advocating for change (you can use any of those listed above), or if you choose to use another organization, please run it by me first. Write a paper similar to the one attached, using its structure to format your own. In this paper, you will give a brief history of the organization, including when it was formed, why it was formed, who founded it, and its contribution to social change. Has it changed anything in relation to what it set out to accomplish? What tactics have members employed to push for change? This will be an argumentative paper, so propose your stance and then tell me why you are right. Compare your chosen group to a similar one and tell me how they differentiate in their methods (i.e., Black Panthers willingness to fight for freedom versus MLK’s peaceful protest). Explain why you think your group methods are a better option to bring about the desired changes. Conclude the paper with suggestions for further research after restating your argument. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

  • “Improving Access to Healthy Food Options in Low-Income Communities: A Policy Brief”

ntroduction to Report #2: Policy Brief
Policy briefs are essential in public health for their role in effective communication, influencing decision-makers, addressing emerging issues, advocating for evidence-based policies, and contributing to overall improvements in public health outcomes.
In this assignment you will select a health issue, program, or policy associated with social determinants of health (SDOH) and create a policy brief about it. Briefs are used by advocates at all levels of government to inform policy makers (and a general audience) about the basics of an issue or potential policy. PLEASE review the various social determinants and lesson plans and select a narrowed down topic that is of interest to you. This should not be left to a broad vague topic. For instance, if you are interested in housing quality then you might narrow down on research and specific policy related to something in housing quality (e.g., lead in homes).
These types of documents/briefs help to influence local, state and federal policy. They are utilized by organizations to communicate their stance on topics and serve as a resource of information to staff, organization members and partners, as well as policymakers. They offer an organization’s general position and recommendation on an issue or potential policy. They can help shape the development of legislative, regulatory, and other advocacy efforts.
You will need to utilize evidence-based findings to talk about your topic and through this research you might find example policies or recommended changes to existing policies that you will want to write about. You are expected to incorporate (minimum) 4 external sources that show evidence-based findings on your topic and support your policy idea. At least 2 of the sources need to come from scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. None of the sources should be personal opinion pieces, blogs, etc. They needed to be grounded in credible data-driven readings. Please use the resources in the ‘APA Formatting and Citation Guide’ in the left hand menu of our class (this is listed under the ‘Resources’ subheading).
My hope is that you consider policy options and make a recommendation through a policy brief versus just discuss the issue. It is best if you approach this as if you were writing for an organization, agency, advocacy group, etc.  Briefs are just that, brief, 2-3 pages. They often do include some visuals, displaying data and this is preferred in the assignment but you will not be marked down if you do not have a visual.

Your final deliverable for the assignment should be completed using the GCH 445 – Report – Policy Brief Template.docx to complete this assignment (your policy brief should be 2-3 pages total)

  • “Empowering Speech: Utilizing the Instant Structure for Persuasive Speaking Success”

ADVICE – Send me your outline early for review, before you commit to composing the complete draft!  One of the many purposes of this assignment, is to illustrate the “crystal clear connection between the outline and the completed draft.”   An outline is simply the structure.   Your foundation!   The completed draft is the same structure with the content added.   Not only does this process (tool) help people to structure — very quickly — speeches, but also, any type of paper that requires structured organization (Remember my video about Dr. Olson…?).   This process can greatly help you to work smarter rather than harder!   I encourage you to, not just use this system in this class, but all classes that required structured writing.
PLEASE, again, really consider sending me your outline early for review, before you do your complete draft, to ensure your foundation is set up properly!  Then composing your final draft will be much easier!   Like with everything in class, the Monday-Friday, prior to being due – you can repeatedly submit for early review, as many times as needed!
…Always try to work smarter…and not harder!  It’s a choice!
Review the Persuasive Speaking directions in Empowering Speech, page 19-20:
    EMP SPCH CONTENT 2023 2024 PDF-5.pdfDownload EMP SPCH CONTENT 2023 2024 PDF-5.pdf
    1) 5 POINTS
Submit a works cited with 8, 2020-2024 sources.  Use easybib.com for help with this.  It makes it very easy.
    2) 5 POINTS
Submit an outline for your speech that reflects the Instant Structure, and Persuasive Speech in the attached directions.   NOTE: All you are doing is the content to your outline, maturing it into a complete speech script!
    3) 10 POINTS
Submit a fully written speech draft, reflecting the instant outline.  And like with the outline, label all the parts of the instant structure: intro, thesis, preview, body-points, transitions, re-stated thesis, summary, and conclusion.  This is to ensure you leave nothing out, and earn the best possible grade.  And, that when you stand up to speak, you fully employe the instant structure, as you address a problem, its causes, and the solutions.   Let it be as simple as it is! All you are doing, is adding content to your outline!

The two articles may be related. The course reading provided must be cited (Not all but need to be in)

  • Title: Observing Verbal and Nonverbal Communication in a Conversation

For this discussion, you are going to observe a conversation between two people and comment on both their verbal and nonverbal behaviors during the interaction.
First listen to either a conversation you observed outside of your home, such as at school, a grocery store, an elevator, or on a bus. Do not make it obvious you are listening to their conversation, just casually observe. While you are observing, try to answer the following questions and report back about the conversation in your original post.
What do you think the relationship between the two people was?
What do you think they were discussing?
What nonverbal actions occurred in the interaction?
What paralanguage did you pick up on and how did it influence the conversation?
Keep in mind these responses will all be conjecture because you will not know what the true answers are. The point is to see what information you can obtain by simply watching people converse.
