    Introduction:
    In Aristotle’s concept of eudaimonia, or flourishing, to the Enlightenment’s emphasis on individual rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” the quest for happiness has been a defining aspect of human aspiration. In contemporary America, however, this quest is frequently conflated with material success and external validation. Some argue that happiness is indeed found in the accumulation of wealth and status, suggesting that financial security and societal recognition are the primary keys to a fulfilling life. This perspective posits that by meeting these benchmarks, individuals naturally achieve happiness. Contrary to this belief, true happiness is not derived from external accomplishments or possessions but from intrinsic factors such as meaningful relationships, a sense of purpose, and emotional well-being. The average modern American’s misunderstanding of happiness lies in the misalignment between these deeper sources of contentment and the societal pressures to achieve superficial markers of success. Understanding happiness requires peeling back the layers of societal expectations and exploring the core elements that contribute to a genuinely fulfilling life. This exploration necessitates a shift from the external to the internal, from the material to the immaterial. The average modern American does not truly understand what happiness is.
    Ultimately, the average modern American does not truly understand what happiness is because societal norms and values prioritize superficial achievements over the intrinsic aspects of well-being that foster genuine happiness.
    Thesis issue to address average modern american doesn’t know what happiness is
    Body Paragraph definition thought negative what happiness is not constant euphoria too often we confuse being high with being happy being high is an escape
    Euphoria/dopamine ( Effects: addiction, temptations, etc.) = phones/technology, alcohol, drugs, etc. -> these are short term happiness, doesn’t actually bring happiness

    The last para: Family/Familial happiness and well-being
    Body paragraph 01:

    Body paragraph 03:
    Family/Familial happiness and well-being
    Familiarity = happiness
    Conclusion:
    Bring back the thesis: The modern American uses euphoria and materialism to achieve happiness as they are unsure of what happiness really is.
    Summarize body para.
    restate/propose your reason again (the important of family) = this time your not using resources

  • “Crafting Fiction: A Reflection and Revision of Three Exercises”

    Fiction Portfolio (30%)
    Your Fiction Portfolio is a culmination of your three fiction exercises from this semester. Each exercise must first appear as its original submission on one or more pages followed by a revised version. Therefore, in total, you will be submitting at least six pages of fiction.
    Your revisions must reflect an engagement with my feedback as well as that of your peers. Further, your revised exercises should demonstrate an understanding of the formal techniques that we covered in class from A Swim in the Pond in the Rain by George Saunders. Students should employ at least one formal technique that we learned about over the semester per story.
    Lastly, a one-page reflection should accompany the portfolio that touches upon the writing process and the decisions you made in your revisions. Please answer the following questions in your reflection: 1. Did you grow as a fiction writer over the course of the semester, if yes, how so? 2. Did you surprise yourself in any way? 3. What was most challenging for you? 4. What specific revisions did you make and how did they improve the exercises? When you refer to the specific revisions you made you must excerpt them from the original piece of writing as well as the revision to demonstrate the changes you made.
