“Measuring the Measures: An Analysis of Measurement in Criminology/Criminal Justice Research”
In Module 6, our focus was on a critical part of the research process: measurement. The assigned readings presented some discussion (and evidence) that illustrated how measurement is considered and refined in criminology/criminal justice. Among other attributes, we are generally concerned with the validity and reliability of our measures, which reflect accuracy in capturing real-world constructs and facilitate repeatability in future studies.
In this week’s discussion, explain how you see the issue of measurement when you read coursework or outside material related to criminal justice. What issues seem to be measured pretty well, and which ones are lacking, in your view? Does our discipline talk enough about measurement, or should it be emphasized more? And finally, if you were conducting criminology/criminal justice research, what do you think would be the MOST difficult constructs to measure?
I’m looking forward to reading your perspectives. -
Title: The Rise of Mass Incarceration in the United States: Causes and Consequences
Since the 1970’s, the United States has experienced unprecedented growth of incarceration. This growth has resulted in what may be referred to as “mass incarceration”. First, briefly define mass incarceration and provide some data that indicates the scope of this phenomenon. Second, argue WHY you think the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world (e.g., more crime, better police, tougher laws, targeting certain groups, etc.). Finally, briefly discuss the pros and cons of the growth of incarceration and argue whether policies contributing to mass incarceration should be maintained or reformed. If you think maintained, briefly explain why. If you think reformed, please suggest one or two reforms you think may be most beneficial.

The Evolution of Policing in America: From Community Relations to Technological Advancements
In this course, we have been learning about the different time periods of policing. Based on the current climate, there is a level of distrust today between the police and the public. Riots, marches, and protests in response to high-profile police shootings have eroded the relationships that were built through community policing. With the hopes of improving police efficiency and finding new approaches to working together with the public, we move into a new period of policing.
Using the Internet links provided this week and your textbook look at the different periods of policing up to today. Based on the changing role and function of police officers over the years, address the questions below, ending with the current state of policing and how it is affected by technology.
Use the Policing in America Template [DOCX] Download Policing in America Template [DOCX]in which you will:
Examine different periods of policing and discuss their main strengths and weaknesses.
Identify the period of policing that you believe has had the greatest impact, and justify why you feel that is.
Explain how technology affects policing in today’s society, including both the pros and cons.
