“Exploring the Dimensions of Schooling through Educational Connoisseurship: A Critique of Three Artifacts”
Educational Connoisseurship
If you were a connoisseur of wine, preparing to compose a criticism (which is not only a negative assessment remember; Dewey said “the end of criticism is the reeducation of the perception of the work” (as quoted in Eisner, 1977, p. 347), you would first have to begin with a description. This description of the wine – all of its qualities – would send you on a hunt for books, and experts, that could help you understand what you had described, why it is the way that it is.
As a connoisseur, and eventual critic, of education, you have to begin with a description. In chapter 4 Eisner describes five dimensions of schooling: intentional, structural, curricular, pedagogical, and evaluative. Choose three of these dimensions and aim for about 2 pages (double-spaced) for each (six pages, total plus title and reference page), in which you both 1) write a description of an artifact and 2) make connections to Eisner’s definitions of the dimensions (using direct, APA-formatted quotes from the text). Each dimension should have its own artifact. -
“Navigating Self-Selection Bias in Convenience Sampling: Strategies for Reducing Bias in Research Studies” Introduction In research studies, the selection of participants is crucial in obtaining accurate and reliable results. However, the process of selecting participants can be influenced by
Using the assigned readings, presentations, and videos as a guide, address the following issue: Some people decline to participate in a study because they are too busy, do not like the topic, or are just uninterested. Some people are overly interested and have an agenda to push. This opportunity to choose can create self-selection bias, and it leads to a biased or non-random sample. If a researcher must use convenience sampling for their study, describe how this form of sampling is conducive to self-selection bias and the steps researchers should take (supported by scholarly sources) to reduce this bias.

“Data-Informed Vision & Goals: A Comprehensive Assessment and Collaboration Project for Improving Literacy Instruction”
In addition to your Visual Portfolio, the other key assessment for this course is a Data-Informed Vision & Goals Literacy Project.
As part of the Tennessee Literacy Success Act (PC0003Links to an external site.), districts are required to administer an approved universal reading screener to all students in grades K-3 during three administration windows each school year, and report data to the Tennessee Department of Education (the department). As either a reading specialist or a special educator, it is important that you be able to administer and use results of multiple assessment tools to systematically evaluate literacy instruction at the individual, classroom, school, and district levels. The Data-Informed Vision & Goals Literacy Project is designed to help you approach doing this in a systematic, thoughtful manner.
In a nutshell, you are to identify and describe the various types of assessment tools. And then you are to analyze a given data set for strengths and weaknesses. Once you have completed your analysis, you are to collaborate with a person you consider to be a highly effective literacy teacher to develop evidence-based literacy goals for the purpose of increasing student achievement. Keep in mind that you are approaching this from a whole class or whole grade perspective, NOT for an individual student (take off your hat as a classroom teacher where you are used to thinking about improving achievement for just one student). This collaboration can be with a colleague at your school or with a peer in this class (and Zoom is definitely a good way to collaborate on this!). If you collaborate with a peer who is in this course with you, please do not turn in the same paper. It should be your own work.
