“Exploring the Solar System: Integrating ELD and Science for Elementary Students”
Imagine you are a social studies, science, or math content area teacher. Choose one. You will be planning an Integrated ELD lesson for a whole class of students whose English proficiency varies from basic to proficient. As you plan your lesson, you will need to consider how you will provide differentiated scaffolds for your English learners, but also challenge your English proficient students. Your driving standards will be the content area standards, but you will also use ELP Standards 6–8 to help support your English learners. ELP Standards 6–8 represent interactive communication, which supports listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Select an elementary grade level (K–5) and a content area (social studies, science, or math). Review the Arizona History and Social Science Standards, Arizona Science Standards, or Arizona Mathematics Standards for your chosen grade level. and choose at least 1 content standard to assess in your lesson. Access the following ELP Standards for your selected elementary grade level: Arizona English Language Proficiency Standards Kindergarten Arizona English Language Proficiency Standards Grade 1 Arizona English Language Proficiency Standards Grades 2-3 Arizona English Language Proficiency Standards Grades 4-5 Review ELP Standards 6, 7, and 8, and choose an ELP standard and sub-skill to address in your lesson. Pay attention to the expectations for each proficiency level (Pre-Emergent/Emergent, Basic, and Intermediate). This will help you determine what differentiated scaffolds to provide for your English learners. Review ELP Standards 9 and 10 as well and determine if any of these language standards/sub-skills apply to your lesson. Remember, ELP Standards 9 and 10 are language standards that focus on vocabulary and grammar. Create a 30- to 45-minute social studies, science, or math lesson (Integrated ELD) that will assess your chosen standards and include differentiated instructional strategies to support your English learners. Use the Lesson Template to complete your lesson.

Consider answering the following questions when writing the summary: (1) What is the major research question(s) addressed by the authors?, (2) Are the authors testing a particular theory or hypothesis? If so, describe the theory., (3) Who were the participants?, (4) How was the research conducted? (In your own words, describe the research methods involved in the study), (5) What were the results? (this is often the hardest part of the article to summarize – you can often find an easier to understand version of the study results in the beginning of the Discussion section of the article), (6) Were the authors hypotheses supported? (You will typically find this in the Discussion section of the article), (7) Did the authors mention any limitations to the study, and (8) Did the authors describe any practical implications or future research as a result of the current findings?
The summary part should be around 2 pages in length.
Finally, tie in the article with your future career in education – The final portion of the review should include evaluative comments about the study. “Exploring Diversity in the Classroom: Strategies for Teaching and Inclusion”
Introduction to the Midterm Research Project
The central concept for your midterm research project is “Diversity in the Classroom”. A number of assignments you will complete this semester provide you with a basic understanding of this important concept. You should also have gained some insight into the practice of teaching diverse populations of students in the classroom. I also hope you have begun to appreciate (if you did not already) the fact that diversity can be a strength to a quality teacher.
With this in mind, you will create a presentation using Google Slides (located in Google Drive). The appearance of the presentation is up to you. Be creative. Experiment with the program. Use images. You may choose to add a video or audio. A number of tutorials exist to show you how to create and manipulate Google Slides presentations. To locate these guides, simply conduct an Internet search for “Google Slides Tutorial”. If you have ever used Microsoft PowerPoint, you will probably find they work very much the same.
Your final slide should be a “References” slide. You should cite all your references (both in-text and in the References section) using current APA style. You must have at least five references.
Topic and Instructions for the Assignment
You will conduct research into the topic of Diversity in the Classroom and present your findings in a Google Slides presentation. Topics designated as “Research” will require you to conduct online research to respond to the prompt. Please make use of the Galileo collection on the MGA library website.
Your presentation will be divided into three parts:
Part 1: Definition of diversity: 3-5 slides
What do we mean when we refer to “diversity in the classroom?”
What are some examples of how students are diverse in the modern American classroom?
How does that compare to what you have seen in the classroom where you teach or where you were a student?
Part 2: Techniques for teaching diverse students- 3-5 slides
How should a teacher deal with having diverse populations of students in the classroom? What techniques are useful based on specific diverse characteristics?
Part 3: Your plan 3-5 slides
Based on what you have seen, read, and experienced, create a detailed plan for teaching diverse students. You should address specific teaching techniques, methods for managing behavior, or good teaching practices. Where appropriate, cite the source that advocates specific techniques or methods.
Create a list of 5-10 web-based resources you could use for teaching diverse learners. Be sure to designate what they do and why they would be useful. -
