  • Creating a Safe and Inclusive Learning Space: Reflections and Goals for Writing and Responsibilities in the Classroom

Step 1: You probably already do a fair amount of writing: for courses, on social media or a blog, for a job… What would you say are your strengths? How about your weaknesses? What are your goals for writing this semester? Where do you think this course can help?
Step 2: In a second paragraph, talk about what you think is necessary for a learning space that is safe, encourages curiosity, inquiry, and experimentation. Please make sure to respond to each of the following 3 questions:
What responsibilities do students have to each other? How can you help each other succeed?
What responsibilities do students have to the teacher? How can we succeed and collaborate?
What responsibilities does the teacher have to students? How can I help you succeed?
Step 3: Think of a specific class, in high school or college, which you felt created a space that helped students learn, grow, and succeed. It can, but does not need to be, an online class. Briefly tell us about the class and what specifically about it helped you learn and grow. My values about equitable learning spaces can be found in the “Equity and inclusivity in our learning environment” section of the syllabus; think of these policies as the foundation of how we work together in this class. After everyone has posted to this discussion board, I will look through your responses, identify common ideas and themes, and compile them into a “Class Values and Common Commitments” document that will guide our interactions with each other for the rest of the summer session.

  • Title: “Migration and Displacement in Immigrant Narratives: Effects on Characters and Their American Born Children”

Write about migrations in Lahiri’s short stories, Rosario’s novel, and in Danticat’s narratives. What is the effect of displacement from the home country on the characters that migrate to the United States? What is the effect of this displacement on characters’ American born children? As you consider these immigrant narratives, reference mobility and freedom in Hurston’s novel. Does the move from one geographic space to another liberate characters?

  • “Raising Awareness for Mental Health: Understanding and Addressing a Common Disorder”

    Step 1: Orientation
The school organises a HEALTH DAY and asks you to present a mental health disorder in order to raise awareness for such issues.
    Step 2: Preparation
Your teacher will assign the groups and the subjects. As a group, you need to fill in the information grid. In order to come up with sufficient and interesting information, you must search the internet. Look for at least three reliable and trustworthy sources.
Once you’ve collected all the information, you start preparing the presentation. Keep the following requirements in mind:
    –          The presentation should be between 5 to 10 minutes long (make sure everyone has an equal share in the presentation).
    –          Include all the information from the grid.
    –          Create a poster to visualise your presentation (e.g. Canva).
    –          Use the appropriate structure: introduction, body and conclusion.
    –          Practise your presentation at home (pay attention to pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary…)
    –          Take a look at the evaluation grid.
    Step 3: Action
Present your findings to your fellow pupils. Be calm and confident and speak clearly.

  • “The Ethics and Dangers of Cancel Culture: A Case Study on the Cancellation of J.K. Rowling”

Based on the work you’ve done with Contrapoints’s “Canceling” video and related to our discussions on morals and ethics, you will consider on what level addressing cancel culture is a moral and/or logical issue.  In your essay, you should discuss how free speech might be maintained while dealing with figures in pop culture, how bias can be avoided in attempting to prove or disprove reasonable standards for cancelation, and what responsibility critical thinkers have to refute false claims of cancelation.  When you respond to the prompt, think about:
One example of a politician, pop culture icon, or celebrity who has been “canceled” (you may discuss other examples of cancelation, but not at length; this example will be your overall focus)
The grounds on which they were “canceled,” and whether those grounds are within reason (your focus here is whether this person deserves to be canceled, and why or why not)
Whether cancel culture is ethically and/or logically dangerous, and why
What steps should reasonably be taken to combat cancel culture, if combating it is the right way to go
What should have been done in the case of your chosen politician, icon, or celebrity
Because you are exploring a real life case of cancel culture, you must use a source exploring the cancelation of your chosen figure; this may include one or more of their interviews, Tweets, or set of court documents.  You must also use one scholarly source to address why this cancelation was or was not justifiable.  Both of these sources must be properly attributed both in in-text citations and the Works Cited.
You may not use Natalie Wynn or James Charles as examples of canceled figures (because Wynn already gave us a detailed account of why they were canceled and whether this was justified), but some examples of canceled figures you can explore may include:
    DaBaby
    Shia LaBeouf
    J.K. Rowling
    Aaron Rodgers
    Ellen DeGeneres
    Kris Wu
    Kanye West
    Marilyn Manson
    Armie Hammer
    R. Kelly
    Gina Carano
    Dave Chappelle
    Colin Kaepernick
Optional: A few films have addressed the idea of cancel culture without explicitly forcing a stance on their audience.  Tár and Whiplash may be thought-provoking movies for you to check out; they encourage us to explore their characters as both absolutely detestable and immensely talented people.

  • Title: The Power of Persuasion: Convincing Readers to Take Action Against Climate Change

You should have an introduction that moves from general information to more specific information ending with the most specific information: a clear thesis that makes it clear what you want to persuade readers to do in your paper. The body should be comprised of several 8/11-point paragraphs. End the paper with a conclusion that gives your final thought and does not just merely restate your thesis and main points.
Your essay should be at least 1500 words, follow MLA guidelines, incorporate at least three credible sources (no older than 2019), and have a properly formatted Works Cited page.
