Please select one of the options below for this week’s main post.
1) Be the writer: After reading this week’s assigned literature and online learning resources, imagine that you are a member of the group travelling to Canterbury. Then, think about what your own tale might be, in general terms… It should be an autobiographical tale reflecting upon an aspect of your personal life (your job or career; family; hobbies and interests; where you live now; places you’ve travelled or adventures you’ve experienced).
In your main post, you should first provide a title for your tale. Then, write a brief synopsis of your imagined tale you’d share to the group, or provide a brief description of your main character (you) that is at least 10 lines, written in rhyming couplets. Next, discuss how your character would likely interact with some of the other travelers described in Chaucer’s Prologue. (Use a specific example). Finally, explain to the class how your tale would be similar and/or different from any of the tales you read this week in terms of character, tone, theme, or satire.
or
2) Be the teacher: For your main post, select one of this week’s assigned stories and briefly identify and explain its theme(s) in your own words, addressing your classmates as if they are your students. Along the way, quote/cite a specific online learning resource (one linked in class, or a scholarly source found elsewhere) that can aid in their understanding of the story you chose. Last, at the bottom of your main post, write one relevant, engaging discussion question about your story, or this week’s assigned literature in general. The question shouldn’t be purposefully confusing or difficult, nor should it be obvious or simplistic. Any question should require a short response of no more than one paragraph for students to successfully answer- no multiple-choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank questions allowed.
Continue discussion of questions and answers as the week progresses. If replying to a classmate who is acting as the teacher, be sure your reply includes an answer to their question(s). If possible, respond to classmates who haven’t already had their question answered by another student. -

Essay during the first 4 weeks of class, using

draft and revise an essay.
**Important: No research at all is allowed for any of the essays, or stages of them, in
this class. Do not look at the internet or anywhere else; you are the writer

The Classification Essay Steps by Week
Starting in Week 2, you will begin preparing
to write your 5-paragraph Classification Essay.
·
In Week 2, you will study the
Classification pattern of writing, how to use prewriting, and how to write
without research. You will apply all of this knowledge toward completing a
prewriting/planning worksheet for your Classification Essay and participating
in a writing workshop, receiving and giving peer reviews over that worksheet. you will study how to write the
full draft of your Classification Essay, how a 5-paragraph essay is structured,
how to create flow for your reader with transitions and other tools, and how to
write strong introductions and conclusions and format a simple essay in APA.
Remember: A 5-paragraph Classification essay will take one
topic and break it into three ideas, in a branching structure.
Classification essays are not intended for sharing personal stories, arguing,
or doing anything except naming a topic and explaining three categories of the
topic.
The topic and three categories (three body
paragraphs, eventually) could be a topic + 3 types of the topic, topic + 3
“ways in which,” or the topic + 3 “reasons why.” Your thesis statement for a
classification essay will simply be your topic and 3 main points in sentence
form. Examples of each:
·
topic + 3 types of the topic = Coffee mugs- three types- novelty, big and
heavy, small with little volume
·
Thesis = There are three main types of coffee mugs; these
include novelty mugs, big and heavy mugs, and small mugs that do not hold
much.
·
topic + 3 “ways in which” = Buying groceries- three ways- running to a
convenience or Dollar Store, going to a dedicated grocery store, going to a
superstore that sells everything including groceries
·
Thesis = There are three ways in which one might go about
purchasing groceries; for example, a quick trip to a convenience or
“dollar”-type store, an actual grocery store that specializes in just
groceries, or a superstore that sells everything, groceries included.
·
topic + 3 “reasons why” = Why more people are staying home- three
reasons- need family time, enjoy “house hobbies,” safer at home
·
Thesis = People are staying home more for several reasons,
including the need for more family time, the pleasure of working around the
house on projects or hobbies, and the relative safety we feel when we are at
home.
So, for your Classification Essay, you will (in Weeks 2, 3, and 4)
create a structure and thesis like this and will plan, draft, and revise your
essay, paying attention to the required theme announcement for this session. -

“Challenging Societal Expectations: The Crucial Role of Julia Hawes in Edith Wharton’s ‘Summer’”
Edith Wharton’s novel “Summer” presents us with a complex and multi-faceted portrayal of the protagonist, Charity Royall, and her struggles as a young woman in a small New England town. While the focus of the narrative is primarily on Charity, one character who plays a peripheral role throughout the novel is Julia Hawes. Despite her seemingly minor importance, Julia Hawes serves as a crucial figure in the development of Charity’s character and the unfolding of the plot in the latter part of the novel.
Julia Hawes is introduced as a wealthy woman who resides in the town of North Dormer, where Charity also lives. She is portrayed as an independent and self-assured individual, in stark contrast to Charity’s own struggles with her identity and societal expectations. Julia’s presence in the narrative serves to highlight the stark differences between her and Charity, presenting Charity with an alternative path that she could potentially take in her own life.
As the novel progresses, Julia’s interactions with Charity become increasingly significant. Julia’s non-conformity to societal norms and her rejection of traditional gender roles challenge Charity’s own beliefs and assumptions about herself and her place in the world. Julia’s rejection of marriage and her pursuit of personal fulfillment outside of traditional domesticity present Charity with a different vision of womanhood, one that is not defined by her relationships with men.
Through her interactions with Julia, Charity begins to question her own desires and aspirations. Julia’s presence in Charity’s life forces her to confront the limitations of her own circumstances and to consider the possibility of forging her own path, separate from the expectations of society. Julia’s influence on Charity ultimately leads her to make crucial decisions towards the end of the novel that shape the course of her life.
In this way, Edith Wharton uses the character of Julia Hawes to complicate Charity’s journey and to challenge her preconceived notions about herself and her place in the world. By presenting Julia as a counterpoint to Charity, Wharton highlights the different possibilities and choices available to women in a patriarchal society, ultimately encouraging Charity to reexamine her own desires and motivations.
Overall, Julia Hawes may be a peripheral character in “Summer,” but her significance in the narrative cannot be understated. Through her interactions with Charity, Julia serves as a catalyst for self-reflection and growth, pushing Charity to confront her own beliefs and assumptions. By incorporating Julia into the novel, Wharton enriches the portrayal of Charity’s character development and offers readers a nuanced exploration of gender, identity, and society in turn-of-the-century America.

“Exploring Gun Control: A Comparative Analysis of Differing Perspectives”
Guidelines:
● Consider the contrasting/differing opinions we have read on ONE of the issues
(guns, abortion, technology), and write a comparative evaluation of their
approach; don’t just say which one you agree with, but look at the two essays in
their entirety: and how they develop their argument, how they support their
position, what kind of communicative strategies they use, etc.
● You must use at least ONE of the articles we have read; for the second article,
you can also use one of the readings from the syllabus, or you can look at a
different writing you found on the same issue that you think is interesting to put in
a dialogue with the first piece.
● You should write for me and your classmates, so an audience generally familiar
with the essays: no need to summarize the whole articles, but use paraphrase and
quotation pointedly and effectively, when they are useful for your interpretation
and response to the essays.
● The articles on guns and abortion were taken from the following anthology:
Last Name, First Name. “Title of Essay.” The Ethical Life: Fundamental
Readings in Ethics and Moral Problems, edited by Russ Shafer-Landau, Oxford
University Press, New York, 2021, XXX–XXX
The rest of the articles are online sources and can be quoted accordingly,
following MLA rules.
If you instead choose to use any outside resources that you have encountered,
you must also list and cite them in MLA format.
● Your essay should be about 4 to 5 pages long (double-spaced, 12pt. Times New
Roman font).
● Find an original title for your essay.
