  • “The Pursuit of Happiness: Examining the Role of Religion, Gratitude, and Wealth in Achieving True Happiness”

Synthesis Paper Assignment (200 points) – Due May 7th 1:00PM
At this point, we have explored the class topic from a variety of different angles, lenses, and perspectives. The Synthesis Paper requires you to “synthesize” your sources in the paragraphs, which means to connect them on a single point or topic of discussion.
PURPOSE: To respond to the class topic with an argument you can support and defend using the class sources and sources you find yourself.
Take a stance on the course topic (happiness) and use the sources to defend and support your response:
Develop a position you have arrived at through your reading and reflection on your course topic. Your thesis is an opinion statement presented as an argument. Your thesis should be specific.
Use the sources to support your thesis. You will want 3-5 sub points to develop in the body of your paper (stated in your topic sentences). Consider connecting happiness to a secondary topic (religion, gratitude, psychology, mental wellness, physical wellness, wealth etc).
Present your position in a fair-minded, evidence-based manner. Persuade. Don’t attack.
    Requirements:
The paper is a 4-6 page “argument” related to the class semester topic and questions. The Title page and References page does not count toward the page length.
Make sure your tone is professional, informed, and reasonable.

Do not use first or second-person pronouns.
We will use APA format for this paper to get used to multiple formatting types.
Provide a References page with your source citations documented according to APA standards. Provide at least one parenthetical citation for each source within the document wherever you use each source, whether you quote or paraphrase from it.
Integrate your sources smoothly by using a signal phrase to introduce quotes and proper context to introduce paraphrased information.
Integrate or “synthesize” your comments so that you are using sources to compare, contrast, support, or disagree with one another and with your own views. You can do that by bringing multiple sources into a single paragraph or by moving between paragraphs but using new sources and information to clarify, extend, contrast, support, or disagree with what has been said previously in the paper, referring back to evidence. The goal of this paper is higher-level synthesis or connection between various sources and your own thesis.

  • “The Power of Language and Objects in Shaping Discourse Communities”

    DIscourse  communities
We have spent the past month discussing the language and culture of different discourse communities to which we all belong, whether these are groups of friends, family, co-workers, fellow worshippers, team members, fellow students, or people we know that share the same hobbies or interests we do.  Over the last few weeks, we have been brainstorming and taking notes on Words or Objects that have important meaning, value, or significance for one of these discourse communities, or DC’s, to which we belong.  The assignment is to craft a 3-page essay persuading readers about the importance or value of a single Word or Object to one of the discourse communities to which we currently belong, or to which we belonged for a long time.  The essay should rely on personal memories, stories, and descriptive details to help persuade the reader why this Word or Object is so important or valuable to one of your personal discourse communities.  You can look over the three sample papers in the Unit 1 folder again for inspiration or style ideas, but keep in mind that we are aiming for more personal descriptive details than some of these.

  • “The Power of Reflection: A Graduation Speech” As I stand before you today, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and honor. To be chosen by my classmates to speak on this momentous occasion is a true privilege. I am hum

The graduation speech is an opportunity to reflect on the past and imagine the future in a positive light. Envision yourself graduating and being chosen by your classmates to give this speech. Consider why you might be selected, and focus on what it means to reach this marker in your own life. Offer courage and confidence to others. You should have a message or central idea. Don’t just spew words –decide what you think is the most important thing for your audience to leave your speech with; think about both what has happened in the past and what you hope will happen in the future. If you choose to reminisce about your high school experience in your speech, make sure you don’t focus too much on yourself. Remember, you have an audience that needs to engage with your speech, so if you are talking about your memories, find a way to make those memories relevant to others in the audience too.
