Before you select any of the following categories of topics, open the eLibrary database (or one of the Persuasive databases below) and verify that there is AT LEAST one photo or chart that matches your topic somehow.
Open Opposing Viewpoints, Points of View and/or SIRS to make certain there are at least three news articles on your topic since you will need at least these articles and the eLibrary image to create your visual aid and outline.
Encyclopedia Britannica will offer definitions of problem topics as well, but DO NOT use ONLY EB to research and write your speech.
I do not need these photos or research database links copy/pasted in this assignment. I only need to know that you VERIFIED your topic is researchable from the collection found in the respective database(s).
Topic can be a local problem, a state problem or a national problem. Avoid international problems–thinking “globally” is too big for this assignment. However, since Dallas and Texas are not known as research hubbubs, you may have to research other cities and states and “infer” that whatever problems they have there we may also have here.
Examples:
-Body: “We need to drink more water and less sodas” or “We should exercise more to prevent diabetes and heart attack.”
-Local: “A kid at my sister’s/brother’s school was bullied into an attempted suicide, so we need to fight bullying” or “We need a neighborhood watch program on my street.”
-City/County: “We in Dallas need to appeal to city hall to get potholes in streets repaired.”
-State: “Texas needs to build a high-speed rail train from each major city to the next.”
-National: “The USA has crumbling bridges and overpasses. We must demand our Congress raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans to pay for bridges and overpasses that threaten each of us every day with collapse.”
NOTE: Write these 10 proposals as a vertical “grocery” list just like the example list above…but write them AS A PROBLEM. In other words, do not write just “Homelessness” but rather “We need to help the homeless get off the streets in our city.”

When looking for a credible, relevant article, you have many options. Think about a social, cultural, political, or environmental issue relevant to our world that evokes (in you) passionate, strong views you can share with your audience. Most current topics are not “yes/no” issues; many have layers, like an onion, that can be discussed with varying opinions and views. Your article summary helps to introduce the topic and clearly explain the issue, including the author’s perspective. You are not persuading, to win an argument, in the response, but instead sharing your insightful views on a subject that is important to you. You own the response section and can steer the main points to suit you. A few thoughts on your summary/response essays:
Op-eds or articles are in “quotes,” not italicized—only ONE article is used for this essay.
The 200-word (approx.) summary should stay objective and in third person—stay away from first or second person P.O.V. The summary is meant to prepare the reader for your response, which is the nucleus of the essay.
In your response, do not state the obvious or simply agree or disagree with the article. The article/topic/issue should have many layers (like an onion) for you to explore, interpret, and make connections. Don’t try to cover too many aspects of the topic, but find what is most important (to you) and synthesize, interpret, explain, and evaluate. Give your audience something interesting to ponder. (This doesn’t mean the topic must be scholarly; if you are fascinated by competitive online gaming, and believe it is a valuable sport, tell us about it.)
Connotative, active voice is still important to engage your reader.
Organization is vital for this essay, so decide your controlling point (topic sentence) in each response paragraph along with sufficient supporting details. -

Checklist-To-Review Before Submitting the Argument Essay
Place your student/class/date/assignment information on the top left side of the first page.
Insert headers with your last name and consecutive page numbers.
Center a title (more than one-word title).
Double-space your text.
Place your thesis statement at the end of your introductory paragraph as the last sentence. Write your own topic sentences: avoid beginning topic sentences with the source material.
Use transitions between body paragraphs for a better flow of ideas, for example, “One problem…Another problem… Avoid using pronouns such as “I”, “you”, “we”, and “your” since this is an academic paper.
Avoid beginning sentences with “It” or “There” since these are passive constructions (voices). Insert a noun after “this” for a clear referent. Do not include the year of publication for MLA Style.
Place the period after in-text citations (Mewborn). Do not include personal experiences in an academic paper.
Use Times New Roman, 12 point, for your font.
Avoid writing “In conclusion” at the beginning of your conclusion. Place your Works Cited on a separate page.

INTRODUCTION
Problems are a part of life, and proposing solutions is necessary for a functioning society. Proposals may not always be obvious, but they are common both in the workplace and in everyday life. REQUIREMENTS
Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. The similarity report that is provided when you submit your task can be used as a guide.
You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work.
