Recalling that a summary is a condensed version of other material in your words, write a one paragraph summary of Charlotte E. Howell’s “‘Tricky’ Connotations: Wonder Woman as DC’s Brand Disruptor.” Some important points to keep in mind: 1) Make sure the summary is in your words and focuses on what you deem is important in the article; 2) Do not simply repeat everything Howell has to say—she covers a lot of ground, but you need only focus on her main ideas; 3) Your summary must be different from any abstract associated with the article (but that can serve as a kind of model); 4) Stay in the objective, third person point of view; save your opinion for the analytical response of the article.
For the response, offer an opinion about the article and its theory of representation in popular culture. You do not need to write exclusively about film or Wonder Woman, but your discussion should focus on some aspect of popular media (film, television, literature, comics, music, etc.) and representation of a particular idea or identity. You can reasonably expect your audience’s familiarity with the popular culture references, and so consider them “common knowledge,” not requiring citation. Try to use specific examples as part of your support, and make sure your response has a thesis of its own to focus narrowly on the point selected. Try to narrow your topic as much as you can.You must cite or paraphrase at least twice from the Howell article and include an MLA-style Works Cited page. You may use up to two additional sources beyond the Howell article for support. Also, be sure you continue to use the objective third person point of view throughout the response.
Your response essay should stay focused on supporting your thesis, a personal response to the essay that you prove with three main reasons (key ideas associated with body paragraphs) that are in-turn supported by specific evidence and examples.

Title: The Power of Symbolism in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter”
You will write an analysis of one of the works listed below. An analysis should answer a focused question that is related to a literary element (character, symbolism, foreshadowing, etc.) of your chosen text.
You should develop the question you want to answer as you’re reading the text. Your question should be something you’re truly interested in answering. Your question should be able to be answered differently by different readers. If everyone would answer the same, or if the answer is obvious, your question is not analytical. Your question also should be answered by a close study of the text, through examining quotes and paraphrases. If you can answer your question through just a general discussion of history or the plot of your novel, your question is not focused enough. You should aim to show your readers why your question was worth researching, and to give your readers, and yourself, a fresh new perspective.
Once you begin to answer your question, find THREE peer-reviewed criticisms from the TCTC library database that relate to your focus. Read these carefully also. You are looking for criticisms ABOUT the novel, NOT book reviews or overviews or biographies or web sites or PowerPoints or movie reviews. The research project should include each of the following:
1. your brief summary of the work you read;
2. your personal analysis of the element you chose, including use of quotes and paraphrases from the novel (no less than six novel quotes);
3. an integration of each of the criticisms into your overall analysis of the selected element, with comments on areas of agreement or disagreement (2-3 quotes from each criticism).

Please choose one of the three quotes below, and write a 2 – 3 page essay (500-750 words), double-spaced, explaining the quote and how it applies to your life. Make sure you provide specific details and examples. You should also include an original title on your essay (that is properly capitalized) that relates directly to your paper.

“Exploring the Complexities of Slavery, Trauma, and Survival in Octavia Butler’s Kindred” “Properly Citing Sources in Academic Writing: MLA Guidelines and Formatting”
Write a 1750-2500 word research essay on a particular topic of your choice in Kindred. Sample topics that relate to the novel are slavery, racism, American history, slave narratives, speculative fiction, feminism, sexual violence, trauma, disabilities, and interracial relationships. (You may chose a different topic as long as it relates to Kindred and you can find secondary sources related to it.)
Based on your research of secondary sources, write a specific and arguable thesis statement that presents your central argument about the novel.
Develop and support your thesis by discussing quotations from the novel and from at least five secondary sources. (The five sources can include the five sources from your Annotated Bibliography, but this is not mandatory.) The sources should preferably be articles from academic (i.e., scholarly) journals or full-length academic texts (or chapters/articles in full-length texts). However, articles from newspapers and magazines are also acceptable. I highly recommend searching for all sources through the PCC Library catalogLinks to an external site. or databases.
I specifically recommend the JSTOR databaseLinks to an external site., which focuses on academic texts.
ProquestLinks to an external site. is another useful database if you’re looking in particular for newspaper and magazine articles related to Butler’s novel and your chosen topic.
Google ScholarLinks to an external site. can also be a good resource since it can help you to locate both 1) open-access academic texts that may not be in our library and 2) articles via the PCC Library—the following video explains how to set up Google Scholar to do this:
For help with any of these tools, you may ask a PCC librarian for research assistance 24/7.
Include a Works Cited page with bibliographic citations for your primary and secondary sources listed in alphabetical order. (Annotations do not need to be included on the Works Cited page.)
Title
Come up with your own creative and specific title for the essay. Use the titles of secondary texts as examples, such as the title, “Violence and/or Nonviolence in the Success of the Civil Rights Movement: The Malcolm X–Martin Luther King, Jr. Nexus” by August H. Nimtz. Note that Byerman uses a catchy title (“Violence and/or Nonviolence in the Success of the Civil Rights Movement”) and a more specific subtitle (“The Malcolm X–Martin Luther King, Jr. Nexus”).
According to MLA format, your own title should be in a normal 12-point font with no underline, italics, bold, or quotation marks (except for titles of works within your title, such as Kindred, which would be italicized).
Thesis
The thesis statement (which can be longer than one sentence) should . . .
Be arguable: a claim with which someone could agree or disagree
Be specific: state both your claim (what you believe) and your reasons (why you believe it)
Supporting your Thesis
The strength of your paper will depend on how well you support your thesis and topic statements. The essay should include analysis of multiple quotations from the primary text and from at least five secondary texts. Furthermore, each body paragraph (not including the introduction or conclusion) should include at least one quoted passage from the primary or a secondary text. In order to ensure that this textual evidence is well integrated into your essay, you should introduce (with a signal phrase), closely analyze, and correctly cite the quotation. It should be clear how exactly the textual evidence supports your thesis and topic statements.
Organization
Your thesis and topic statements should make arguable claims about specific aspects of the texts. Your essay should also include logical and smooth transitions between paragraphs, and the conclusion should not simply repeat your thesis or topic statements. Instead, in the conclusion, briefly examine the wider significance of the texts themselves and/or your critique of them.
MLA
Remember that you must correctly cite any print or web source that you quote or paraphrase. Submitting the words or ideas of someone else without proper citation is considered plagiarism.
To cite a non-poetry quotation in the body of your paper, include the author’s last name (if not obvious from the context) and page number(s) (if any) in parentheses at the end of the quotation. Title: “Exploring the Impact of Self-Checkout Technology on Staffing Issues in the Retail Industry”
For your second planning exercise, gather at least two (preferably more) sources, and provide a 50-100 word paragraph for each beneath it. Each paragraph should summarize the source’s main idea and explain how you see the source helping you in developing your own thesis.
A sample follows:
McWilliams, Alexis, Ismet Anitsal, and M. M. Anitsal. “CUSTOMER VERSUS EMPLOYEE PERCEPTIONS: A REVIEW OF SELF-SERVICE TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS AS ILLUSTRATED IN SELF-CHECKOUTS IN U.S. RETAIL INDUSTRY.” Academy of Marketing Studies Journal, vol. 20, no. 1, 2016, pp. 79-98. ProQuest, https://www.proquest.com/scholarly-journals/customer-versus-employee-perceptions-review-self/docview/1804900318/se-2.
The article by McWilliams et. al describes a thorough review of stores using self-checkout lanes. While not a direct address of staffing issues, the article does point out the customer service reactions and the lack of staffing pushed forward by introducing self-checkout lines, as well as the causes for them.
I plan on using the article to provide some background for 1) reasons for the staffing issues at grocery stores, as well as some of the effects the staffing issues have had on customers elsewhere, pointing out how those issues would translate well to the grocery stores in the metro area.
For reference, the two paragraphs under the article total 101 words. -
