  • Title: Exploring the Power of Fanvids in the One Direction Fandom

For this week, watch at least five fanvids or AMVs (Anime Music Videos) related to the fandom I chose, which is the One Direction (directioners) fandom. These videos should be at least a minute long and should combine clips from the media you are studying with popular music.
Here is a list of some different types of vids:
Character vids: Focus on a single character, often offer an interpretation of a character’s psychology, motivations, and/or character development.
Shipping vids: Focus on a specific ship, often making an argument for and offering evidence of sexual and/or romantic subtext between characters.
Slash vids: Like slash fic, slash vids focus on m/m ships.
AU vids (Ficvids): Use footage of characters and actors to create alternative narratives that either diverge from canon or transport characters into a different genre or setting.
Cross-over vids: Bring together characters from different media properties.
Charles Vane/Lizzie Bennet || Waiting Game  (Black Sails/Pride and Prejudice)
Recruiter vids: Made for members outside of the fandom or sub-fandom, these vids are attempt to “recruit” people to watch a show or ship certain characters.
Write a blog post analyzing the fanvids that you watched this week. Here are some questions to get you started (you do not have to answer all or any of them). What is the purpose of this vid? What songs are paired with clips from the source text? What are the connections between them? What story does the combination of song and images construct? How do different songs shape interpretations of characters and relationships? How do fans build arguments through vids? What pleasure do fans experience looking at them? What about them generates that pleasure?
Be sure to include at least 2 of the articles I attached below.

  • “The Influence of Society on Individual Identity: A Psychological Analysis”

Write a research paper in which you analyze ONE of the following themes or issues.
The focus of this paper will be on one of the issues below (or a variation that you create). As part of discussing
this issue, use at least one story, poem, TV show, or film as an example within your discussion of this theme/
issue. You may choose to compare and/or contrast two works in regards to their treatment of the same or related
themes. (Do not use more than 3 primary texts). Ultimately, your goal is to create a set of insights about this theme/
issue. You are using the literary (or other) texts to help illustrate/build these insights, but it doesn’t need to be the
primary focus of the paper. Rather, your primary focus is on insights about the issue itself.
Clearly, this assignment is intended to encourage each student to find an original path of research in which one can
suit her/his interests and through which one can demonstrate unique analysis & insights. As part of this, you will use
at least one literary or film/tv text as an example. You also must use at least 3 secondary sources that meet the
standards of “legitimate academic texts.” This will require you to do library research (and/or use the academic
databases) as this requirement will negate much of what you might find on the general internet. It is expected that you
will incorporate quotes and ideas from these sources fluidly within the context of your own analysis.
-This paper must be typed, double spaced, font= times new roman 12 or arial 10. Do not add spaces between paragraphs.
    -Use 1 inch margins.
-This paper will be at least 1200 words (approximately 4 complete pages) in length. Do not exceed 8 pages. (This count does NOT
    include the Works Cited Page).
-This paper should be in proper MLA format and should include a Works Cited Page. If this is not written as a properly formatted
MLA paper, you cannot receive a passing grade in this course.

    Week Two Prompt
We have stated that our primary theoretical framework in this course in Intersectionality, which states that we should not view identity as ‘either/or’ but rather ‘both/and’ across different categories. From this point of view, we must work hard analytically to understand an individual’s ‘Standpoint’ on the basis of their relationship to categories of identity. Selecting at least two of the major categories of your own identity, discuss how those categories have intersected to shape your own life experiences, and how your experiences may be similar or different from others on the basis of one or both of those categories. A good example if Sojourner Truth’s speech “Ain’t I a Woman,” in which she points out that her status as a woman of color means she is not included in many of the conversations her fellow white feminists were having at the time.
I am Hispanic, Male, 28 years old, straight male, and Christian. Feel free to ask any questions about me if it will aid you in anyway.

  • “Analyzing the Rhetorical Situation: A Critical Analysis of a Speech” Rhetorical Analysis of “I Co-Founded Facebook. It’s Time to Break It Up.”

    Assignment Prompt: Rhetorical Analysis
    Overview
Before you start working on your own research argument essay, you will spend some time studying the arguments of others, to better understand how they successfully structured and presented a persuasive project. The rhetorical analysis is a foundational assignment to introduce you to the “rhetorical situation,” as a concept. The goal is for you to take what you learn about successful argument, and apply it to your own writing in this course.
For this rhetorical analysis assignment, you will analyze a speech (see the options below) to gain a better understanding of “the rhetorical situation”- the audience, purpose, medium, and context–within which the speech was created. In addition to dissecting the speech’s rhetorical situation, you will also identify and discuss the author’s choice of rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) or evidence. *This is the one and only assignment that is not driven by your personal topic selection, as all the following assignments build on each other starting with the Annotated Bibliography and concluding with the Research Story.
    Expectations
As a foundational assignment, the rhetorical analysis will help you to:
Identify and analyze the rhetorical elements of a piece of communication
Assess the effectiveness of a speaker’s choices, in relation to the rhetorical situation
Build a foundation for future argument writing based on the skills and strategies identified and analyzed in this assignment
    Requirements
Length:  There is a 1000 word-minimum. All elements noted below are to be included in the analysis. See Assignment Organization.
    * if the minimum word count is not met, your assignment will be returned with no grade and a resubmission will be required.
Organization: Check out the table below for more information about the required content and conditions of each component:
    Component
    Content
    Conditions
    Introduction (Description)
The intro is your first chance to reach your reader, engage their interest, and include all of the forecasting for the rest of the essay, such as the purpose of the writing project, and the parameters of your investigation. Be sure to focus on what the speaker is doing, how, and why, using the conditions as your guide.
Make sure that you clearly state the speaker and the title of the speech, along with any other details that will help provide the reader with context about your analysis.
Place the speech in a broader context.
Introduce the speech by characterizing the speaker and the occasion.
Identify the audience and situation for which the speech is intended.
    Describe the speaker’s purpose.
THESIS/CLAIM: Identify the rhetorical strategies that you have decided to discuss and indicate, in general terms, how they function to promote the author’s purpose in relation to the intended audience.
    Body (Analysis)
The body will include paragraphs that will have their own topic sentences developed with specifics from the speech. You may want to focus each paragraph on one rhetorical strategy, or you may focus on different parts of one strategy.  Useful strategies for developing paragraphs include:
    Defining the rhetorical strategy(ies).
Quoting or paraphrasing examples to illustrate the writer’s use of the strategy (two or three examples generally suffice).
Explaining how the example illustrates the strategy and how the strategy contributes to the writer’s purpose.
    Conclusion (Evaluation)
The conclusion serves the purpose of reiterating your thesis, briefly summarizing the main points of your analysis, and explaining the significance of your analysis. The significance of your analysis may be suggested by asking questions such as these:
How do the rhetorical strategies that you discussed explain the effects the speaker achieved with his or her audience?
Why were the strategies effective or not effective with the speaker’s core constituency and with other audiences?
What do the rhetorical strategies suggest about the speaker’s agenda?
Document Formatting: MLA formatting: Heading (name, assignment name, course name, date), original title, header (page numbers), line-spacing (double-spaced), 1”margins, and 12-point font size, Times New Roman or sans-serif font. The thesis must be underlined.
Genre/Style: Formal analysis: thesis-driven and paragraph formatted
