“Exploring the Influence of Advantage and Adversity on Academic Success: A Critical Analysis of Richard Rodriguez’s Hunger of Memory”
The purpose of an argument essay is to begin to develop ideas and support specific, tentative opinions on
a given topic with convincing evidence, close reading, and thoughtful interpretation. The topic of
“academic success” has been selected for the Persuasive Argument Essay because it is a topic that all
involved in this English 101 course – students and professor alike – can generally relate to (regardless of
whether it has been ample or scarce in one’s life), aspire to achieve (otherwise we would not be here), and
perhaps ultimately measure or understand in different ways. To focus the essay we will consider the
circumstances of one author’s education and debate significant influences leading to his eventual
“academic success.” Using Richard Rodriguez’s controversial autobiography Hunger of Memory: The
Education of Richard Rodriguez, research, as well as our own personal observation, would you say that
Rodriguez’s “academic success” is more the result of advantage or adversity experienced during his
education? To prepare your argument you will need to define a few key terms: “academic success;”
“advantage;” “adversity.” To support your argument you will want to pay close attention to not only what
Rodriguez says about his “academic success” (content), but also how he chooses to portray the influences
leading to this “academic success” (form). Throughout, we will want to be mindful that how the
autobiography is written serves as a testament to Rodriguez’s “academic success.” For instance, and
among other rhetorical maneuverings, we can track Rodriguez’s strategic use of personal observation
when discussing gain and advantage versus his use of more intimate, personal experience when
discussing loss and adversity. In the Persuasive Argument Essay you can feel free to draw upon your own
personal observation. However, keep in mind that others may have different observations than you do on
the many issues covered by Rodriguez (i.e. bilingual education; religion), and that argument is often most
persuasive when different, and even competing, opinions are acknowledged, respected, and explore -
“The Power of Rhetoric: Analyzing the Effectiveness of Persuasive Techniques in Assigned Texts”
English 101
Rhetorical Analysis Essay: Writing Guidelines and Information
Overview: For
this essay, you will write a rhetorical analysis of one of the assigned
texts. A rhetorical analysis focuses on HOW a text presents an
argument. Essentially you are analyzing the choices an author makes and
judging the effectiveness of those choices.
Basic Requirements:
The essay should be at least 900 words in length.
Make sure that you have a strong, argumentative thesis statement that clearly lays out what you will discuss in your paper.
Use the scholarly tone for writing a formal paper.
Support your argument with evidence from the text.
Include proper MLA in-text citations and Work(s) Cited page written using MLA format for a formal essay.
Note:
All work submitted must be original. If you need help understanding
plagiarism, please check out some of the material under content or ask
me directly. You can not submit work that has previously been submitted
for another class or is written using AI tools.
Texts for Rhetorical Analysis:
Option 1: Choose one of the following texts from the assigned reading list:
“The Perils of Indifference” (Wiesel)
“Commencement Speech 2005” (Jobs)
“Googling Strangers” (Green)
“Super Mario Kart” (Green)
“A Modest Proposal” (Swift)
Using one of the above texts, construct an argument concerning whether or not the author is successful in presenting their message. To do this, the first point you must establish is what you consider the purpose of the text. (You will likely include this in your introduction.) Then
decide if the text is successful in presenting its message. Why or why
not? What rhetorical techniques does the author use to achieve their
goal? What choices does the author/speaker make in order to reach the
audience. -

“Finding Common Ground: A Compromise for the Greater Good”
Essay 2: Rogerian Argument (750-1000 words)
For your Rogerian Essay, you will write a letter seeking a compromise between a stance you hold and an opposing stance expressed in an article from a reliable source.
Your introduction should identify the issue you are discussing, provide context, and indicate your target audience. This audience will either be the exact author of your source (“Dear James Madison”) or the group of people who hold the stance (“To those who believe school uniforms should be mandatory”).
The body of your paper should fairly summarize the audience’s views in a neutral way, acknowledge their values, identify common ground between your position and theirs, and respectfully introduce your own perspective with an invitation for the audience to address the issue with you.
Your conclusion should always indicate the significance of your discussion. For this paper, proposing a compromising position between your own and your audience, explaining how both sides can benefit from understanding one another, and inviting the reader to continue negotiation would be appropriate concluding strategies.
This kind of argument contains a delayed thesis. In this case, your thesis may come at the end of the penultimate (second-to-last) paragraph or the beginning of the last paragraph (conclusion).
The article you address should take a clear stance with which you disagree. You must cite TWO additional sources to support your claims in addition to your opponent. All information from a source MUST be cited. The source you address may be found through a search engine, but your supporting sources should be found through the Blinn Library. Ask your instructor if you are unsure whether a source is acceptable.
Sample Thesis Sentences
Regardless of whether abortion is seen as an acceptable method of dealing with unwanted pregnancies, society as a whole will benefit if we endeavor to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies that occur to begin with.
While you may never agree with me that drug users should receive no further punishment than they inflict on themselves, I hope you have come to acknowledge that standard imprisonment does not address the circumstances of addicts and that we can work together to develop alternatives more conducive to rehabilitation.
I understand your reservations about implementing free college education, but because I still think it is valuable I hope we can agree that if the community college program in Tennessee is still tenable after a year, we can implement a similar program in Texas.
All Formal Writing Assignments Must Include:
Correct MLA formatting as described in section MLA-5a of Writer’s Reference and shown
on the Sample MLA Paper (MLA-5c).
Appropriate formal tone and correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
12 point Times New Roman font -
Title: “Subject + Verb: A Simple Retelling of a Fairy Tale or Comic Book Story” The princess slept. She slept for a hundred years. She was cursed. She was cursed by an evil fairy. The prince searched. He searched
Choose a fairy tale or comic book story that you know well. Retell it in a paragraph of 8-12 sentences, but use only simple sentences that begin with “subject + verb” word order. (In other words, you are writing a deliberately choppy paragraph so that your classmates can “correct” it.)

“The Power of Adaptation: Exploring the Choices and Consequences in Jane Eyre and its Adaptations”
In an essay of 2,000 words, argue for a debatable thesis about any adaptation of any work on our syllabus. Adaptations can include stage versions, film versions, serial television versions, novel or other prose rewritings, “sequels” by other authors, graphic novels, paintings or other kinds of illustrations, digital projects, or even social media creations. “Adaptation” can be a murky category. There has to be some credible link to a work from our syllabus. This will be more obvious in the case of, say, a film adaptation of Forster’s novel that calls itself Maurice than in the case of a piece of abstract art called Another Brooklyn, or a social media parody of nineteenth-century courtship that you think might be alluding to Jane Eyre. There is room for interpretation, but consult me if you have questions about what constitutes a legitimate adaptation for our purposes.
· Your paper must contain a minimum of three sources in addition to your “exhibit” source. Ideally, you will include different kinds of sources. See the page on “BEAM” categories in the reading “Research Basics” on Blackboard. At least three must be scholarly sources. This means peer-reviewed journal articles or scholarly books and book chapters. Articles from popular journalistic sources (i.e. newspapers and magazines), most websites, TED-talks or explainer videos, and other non-vetted sources usually will not count toward the minimum three sources because they are not considered scholarly (see the info on popular vs. scholarly on BB for more information). The distinction is not always obvious or clear cut, so talk to me if you have questions about scholarly vs. non-scholarly sources. There is no maximum number of sources.
· We will spend some class time going over basics of research paper writing to make sure everyone is comfortable with finding sources and integrating them effectively.
· Format the paper in MLA style, followed by a works cited list. Get this right. You will lose points for incorrect citation and formatting. Follow the appropriate web links on Blackboard for reminders on MLA format.
· Part of the work of this assignment is for you to develop your own research question based on your interest in an adaptation. I’ll be happy to talk to each of you individually about generating or honing specific topic ideas if you are having any issues getting started. Once you’ve identified an adaptation that interests you, one way to get started is to focus on choices: what choices has the adapter made, and what does that suggest about ways of reading the original work? Some questions that follow include: What political message might an adaptation make, and how does this relate to political messages of the original? How does an adaptation seem to reflect on or simply meet the interests of its time? What are the gains or losses of changes to the original? What are the gains and losses of strict “faithfulness”?
The work I would like for you to do so with is Jayne Eyre, by Charlotte, and any adaptation of it
