“The Environmental Implications of Syphilis: Examining the Role of Environmental Factors in Transmission and Treatment”
Syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI), has long been a significant public health concern, with outbreaks occurring throughout history. However, the environmental implications of this disease are often overlooked. One key aspect to consider is the role of environmental factors in the transmission and spread of syphilis. Research has shown that certain environmental conditions, such as poor sanitation, lack of access to clean water, and overcrowded living situations, can contribute to the proliferation of syphilis. These environmental factors are often exacerbated in underserved communities, leading to disproportionate rates of infection and further perpetuating health disparities. Moreover, the treatment and management of syphilis can have indirect environmental impacts. The medications used to treat syphilis, such as penicillin, can enter waterways and soil through improper disposal or excretion, potentially disrupting local ecosystems and affecting wildlife. Additionally, the resources required for widespread testing, diagnosis, and treatment of syphilis, such as medical equipment and facilities, can have a carbon footprint and contribute to environmental degradation.

“Breaking Boundaries: Exploring Olive Kitteridge’s Relationships and Potential for Redemption”
Required Reading: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout
Prompt (2 parts): Olive Kitteridge’s inner life never seems to be in sync with her outer life, namely with regards to how hard it is to love—to love her husband, to love her son, to love others in her life, to love herself. Oftentimes, boundaries define how she connects with other people emotionally. At a glance, these barriers limit her from connecting deeply with those around her; however, after more careful consideration, you may conclude that her understanding of human beings is actually very perceptive.
Part 1: Identify and analyze at least TWO of Olive’s relationships where boundaries are evident. The examples that you use should come from two different characters and cover at least two different chapters. Do not expect to find what the barriers are in a very literal way. This will require some interpreting on your part.
Part 2: Next, give Olive a chance to redeem herself in a perfect world, as she does have some potential for redemption. Pretend that Olive has broken through the boundaries that you have discussed. Given how you have come to know Olive and her traits, what sage advice about relationships would Olive give to ONE of the other characters in the book? Use textual examples as proof for what she might say and be specific with the advice depending on whom she is giving it to, for it should be uniquely fitting for that character’s qualities, issues, and relationship with Olive. Suggestion: think about what that character might need to hear from Olive for the sake of improving the relationship and/or solving a personal problem. Avoid generalizations.
Understanding the Notion of Boundary
Definition: the point at which something ends or beyond which it becomes something else
Interpretation: Understand the boundary to be some kind of block or wall that keeps Olive from connecting deeply with another person. It can also be viewed as a limitation that she cannot go beyond. This wall could be one that she imposes herself, something that she has no control over, something that the other person promotes or even something that she uses as a defense mechanism. It could be something psychological, emotional or circumstantial.
Synonyms: limit, margin, block, barrier, threshold, constraint, maximum, constrain, curb, control, restrict (These synonyms may help you understand the nuances of boundary even more, as not all boundaries are the same.)
Requirements:
3.5-4 complete pages
Reference to at least 2 of the 5 Olive Kitteridge selections assigned
MLA documentation format, including a Works Cited page (Cite each chapter that you use individually.)
Appropriately Creative Title that includes the novel’s title
3rd person point of view

Title: Exploring Madness and Cultural Critique: A Final Exam Response
Final Exam Prompt:
In two typewritten pages, please respond to one of the following prompts:
1) This semester, we have seen how tales of madness can be used as vehicles for addressing pressing social concerns, including shifting attitudes toward race, gender, and class. In this paper, you will be asked to find an outside text (i.e., a literary piece, film, television show, animated work, or graphic novel) and argue that it, too, is using the motif of madness to engage in a form of cultural critique. During the course of making your argument, you should draw direct comparisons between your chosen text and at least one of the works we have read and discussed in class, making sure to support your ideas and observations with textual evidence.
2) Over the course of this class, we have read works of poetry, fiction, and drama that explore the idea of madness in a variety of ways, from a range of differing perspectives. We have also encountered one nonfiction, psychological essay that seeks to trouble and challenge our most common assumptions about insanity. In this paper, you will be asked to reflect back on these readings, and the discussions they generated, and answer the following questions: Do you now think about the concept of “madness” differently than you did on the first day of class? How so? In developing your response, you should to quote from at least two of the texts we worked with this semester.
3) In two pages, retell one of the stories we have read from the point of view of a minor character. (For instance, you might retell “Mouthful of Birds” from Sara’s perspective, or “The Lottery” from Old Man Warner’s). Your story must incorporate scenes/dialogue from the original text, not contradict any major plot points, and creatively engage with some of the ideas we’ve been exploring throughout the course (e.g., the historical oppression of women, the lingering effects of poverty, the dangers of blindly following tradition, etc.).
In addition, Prompt 3 requires a “justification” of one page. In this justification, you will explain how your portrayal of the minor character touches on significant issues explored in this semester’s readings and class discussions, and how it helps us to see the original story in a new light. You should quote from at least one of this semester’s texts in your justification.
The final exam is worth 15% of your final grade for the course. -
