Argument Paper Guidelines
Length: 5+ full pages (1500+ words), 12-font, double-spaced, in MLA format with a Works Cited (MLA) page (Works Cited not included in page count). All essays must have titles. Your essay should reflect careful research, thinking, and writing about your topic.
Topic: Free Speech
The final paper must contain a minimum of five sources, at least one of which must be from the textbook. The sources must be credible as reviewed in class and are an important aspect of your grade. This essay needs to be an argument, not merely summarizing your research. It must have a clearly stated thesis in a clear introduction. Claim paragraphs are to be organized around your conclusions after having done this research, NOT simply around sources and quotations. When you introduce sources, remember to introduce the people/websites and their credentials wherever appropriate.
You are not a sponge, but a writer who is critically investigating a subject of interest. The paper can and should be interesting for anyone to read (your target audience is anyone reading at the college level).
The essay will be evaluated on: meeting the essay’s length requirements, credibility of sources, strength of argument and claims, clear writing, organization, timeliness, formal language, and original thinking. Note: Any essay that uses detectable AI, in whole or in part, will automatically result in failure

Title: The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health: Exploring the Negative Effects and Promoting Awareness Thesis Statement: The rise of social media has had a detrimental impact on mental health, particularly in young adults, due to its addictive nature
Post your outline for your research project. Include a fully-developed thesis statement, your major argument points, the supporting details, and the sources you plan to use (cited in MLA format). Next, give me a quick overview (two or so paragraphs) of how you intend to do the project. Is it going to be a paper? A video? A podcast? Something else, entirely? Finally, give a quick two or so paragraph self-review of your own outline.
I will give you feedback on both your outline and your ability to understand the concept of an outline/your self-review.
When creating and evaluating an outline, make sure you are looking for:
* A clear, focused, specific thesis statement
* Structure. Does the flow of this argument make sense?
* Clarity. Can I follow the argument and the key points? Do they add up to proving the point of the thesis?
* Sources. Are these sources authoritative? Would I be able to find the source based on the citation?
You have already done a significant amount of research for this outline in your annotated bibliography. You should incorporate that research here.
Common Mistakes:
* Outline not in correct format
* No citations listed
* No reflection included
* Outline only covers five paragraphs
Guidelines
This outline must include your specific thesis, as well as how each of your sections will prove your thesis. It should be typed, double-spaced in 12 point Times New Roman or Georgia font with standard 1″ margins. The proposal must be a Word document that is upload (not pasted) into Turnitin. It must follow MLA format for the header, title, body, and citations.
You may not use generative AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, predictive writing, etc.) for the writing of this assignment. -
Title: Exploring the Romantic Period: A Comparative Analysis of Two Sources
1. Find 2-3 credible articles, blogs, youtube videos, etc on the Romantic Period (1798-1837). **You will need to create a works cited page with these sources; therefore, do not lose the link to these.
2. Write a one-page essay comparing the information from both sources. You must include ALL information discussed throughout. Ask yourself, what is being discussed? What are both sources saying about the same topics?
3. Complete a Works Cited Page (this should be page 2). -
Exploring Themes and Identity through Zine Creation 1. My zine, titled “Finding Home,” focuses on the experience of being a second-generation immigrant and the search for identity and belonging. I chose to focus on this content because it is
1. what your zine is about and why you chose to focus on the content that is contained in your zine
2. what inspired you to design the layout of the zine as it appears (and what were you hoping to achieve through the overall visual & textual presentation)
3. how themes explored in class (for example, migration, war, representation, identity, et al.) emerged in your zine’s content
4. what you hope readers will gain from reading your zine
5. what, if any, valuable lessons you were able to take away from the
experience of creating your own zine

Title: “The Power of Finding One’s Voice: A Comparison of Lorde and Malesic’s Perspectives on Education and Personal Growth”
You will be asked to read three questions carefully and then choose only ONE question to answer. You will then write a thesis-centered essay of at least 500 words in response to this one question using direct quotations from both “College Students: School is Not Your Job” by Jonathan Malesic and “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action” by Audre Lorde to support your writing.
You must Develop a thesis that takes a clear stance or position in response to one of the questions.
Use MLA in-text citation to support your claim with quotes and paraphrases from BOTH the Lorde and the Malesic readings.
(You must use at least one cited idea from each reading).
Here are the three questions: CHOOSE ONE
1. Is it the responsibility of education or the individual to help us find our voice?
2. When should the pursuit of knowledge be goal-oriented, and when should it be allowed to develop leisurely?
3. In what ways does finding one’s voice help us to become something larger than ourselves? -
Title: Adapting Roles and Responsibilities: How Aging Affects Family Dynamics
Research question – How do family members adapt their roles and responsibilities as aging affects their (physical, mental, and emotional) well-being?
At least 3-5 sources (these should include at least two text sources – articles, books, reports; also, video sources such as TV or film interviews, reports, etc.)
Thesis & Organization: Your papers should be organized around
A clear, precise, and well-narrowed thesis, that reflects a lot of thinking (not the working thesis from the first round!)
Topic sentences that marshal the evidence and information, and effectively lead the reader through the paper
Audience: Your paper should be addressed not to me specifically, but to an external reader who doesn’t know what you know. Your explanation and organization should reflect your awareness that you are trying, above all, to communicate a point to a given audience.
Development: The paper should support all of its points with relevant evidence and explanation, i.e.:
Paragraphs that include very few generalizations, and a lot of evidence
Detailed examples that illustrate ideas
Specific facts that support claims
Direct quotes from relevant authorities to support your points
Research: The paper should reflect a complete research process, i.e.:
a thesis that addresses a clear, researchable question
appropriate sources, appropriately used to discuss, illustrate, give examples of, or prove your points
careful use of paraphrase and summary, avoiding plagiarism
sources appropriately and clearly cited and listed in MLA format
no use of AI to shape your thoughts or write your prose
Sentence skills: Apply the sentence skills you’ve been practicing! Think about
Clear, well-focused sentences – no loose structures or word salad
Nuanced use of joining words and concessives
Use of modifiers (appositives, verbals) to include detail in sentences
Plentiful quotes, integrated effectively and without distracting from your paper
Correct use of MLA citation format inside the paper, and in the Works Cited
Minimum of three substantial sources (e.g., chapters or long-form studies), or at least 5 shorter pieces
Approx. 1200-1500 words (not including Works Cited)
Works Cited (at end of the paper) -
