“Uncovering the Truth: Evaluating Freedpeople Interviews from the FWP”
Our next assignments related to the reading ¨View from the Bottom Rail¨ by James West Davidson and Mark H. Lytle, will continue to explore the Representation vs. Reality of Slavery and Freedom in this country.
As discussed, the slaves (and poor people in general) left few written records behind. What we do have are accounts from a variety of other (mostly white) people who had the priviledge to do so, as well as interviews conducted by the FWP (Federal Writerś Project) with formerly enslaved people. We will be working on finding and evaluating the trustworthiness and accuracy of a variety of these sources. We will need to analyze and evaluate various sources within each category, then use those findings to make comparisons and try and understand larger, overarching ideas being promoted at the time. Can we uncover and construct an objective truth?
To begin with, we will take a closer look at FWP interviews discussed in the text so that you can gain first hand knowledge of these important primary sources.
Use the classpage database links and information that the librarian Wendy Chu discussed on Monday (handout posted under Course Content) to locate and discuss three (3) different freedpeople interviews from the FWP
For each one:
— cite source
— name of interviewee
— summarize what the interview was about
— analyze what perspective that primary source offers (does it seems believable, why/why not?) based on some of the criteria discussed in ¨View from the Bottom Rail¨ (for example, what kind of questions were being asked, who was conducting the interview and how might this have influenced the answers that were given).
NOTE: feel free to look at as many as you like of course to get a wider perspective. Ultimately, we want to also evaluate how we feel about the FWP overall as a useful, historical reference.
Below ill attach View from the bottom of the rail and the library worksheet -
Annotated Bibliography: Exploring the Role of Characters and Society in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights
or an annotated bibliography, you will not include your primary source. This is just a list of the research you are doing and an evaluation of the research.
Each potential source will be listed in MLA works cited entry format, and then there will be at 5 to 7 sentences of annotation under each entry. 3-4 sentences will be a summary of the main idea presented in the potential source. 2-3 sentences will be a discussion about how the source could be relevant to the paper. The following is an example of one annotated entry. Notice that you can use “I” in this assignment because it is discussing how you will utilize the research. Myburg, Albert. “Spaces of Death in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. Journal of Literary Studies, vol. 30, no. 1, 2014, pp. 20-33. Literary Reference Center,
Myburgh’s article focuses on characters within Wuthering Heights and their role
in society. Myburgh presents the possibility that Bronte’s placement of
characters, specifically Joseph, the servant is intentional and mirrors the British view of societal roles during that time period. Myburgh also examines the need for space and roles with the departed within the book and the church. This article can potentially help support Heathcliff’s and Catherine’s struggle with their designated roles within the family. By pulling from Myburgh’s article, I will be able to support the idea that Bronte purposefully places a power struggle
between the two characters early within the novel. -

“The Power of Purpose and Imagery: An Analysis of Literary Elements in [Literary Text]”
The essay will illuminate the literary text, considering the relevance of the writer’s purpose and/or the poem’s imagery, characters, themes, tone, and/or overall style.
Students should include research as thesis support using the guidelines and requirements listed below, and add an introductory and a concluding paragraph.
Guidelines for the Research:
1. The paper MUST implement 3-5 quotes or short passages of paraphrased material from at least 3 unique secondary sources (these must be articles or book excerpts accessed through the databases above). In order receive credit for submitting the rough draft, the draft must include research in at least two body paragraphs.
2. The secondary sources MUST be cited in the body of the paper and then listed on the Works Cited page using proper MLA format. Items listed on the Works Cited page are included specifically because those individual sources were referenced in the body of the paper. Referencing a source in the Works Cited page that is not mentioned and cited in the body of the essay is an indication of potential plagiarism.
3. The focus of the paper is the writer’s original analysis of the poems or short stories. The writer should use the research to enhance the thesis support, meaning only 10-15% of the paper should be research.
4. An entry for the poem must be listed in the Works Cited page, too, using the publication information provided with the piece in the Literature Packet.
5. Students must cite the database information for each of the 3+ unique secondary sources. The assignment requires that students obtain the research through the library’s online databases so if the entries do not demonstrate this fact, students will not receive credit for the research. 5. Each body paragraph must include a topic sentence as the first sentence of the paragraph. The topic sentence should tell the reader what will be covered in the paragraph and will show how the focus of the paragraph will support the thesis. -
