English 101 Research Proposal and Annotated Bibliography
    Instructions:
A good academic research question has these qualities: (1) it interests you, (2) it may interest your audience, (3) it has no easy answer, and (4) it is related to your reading. To formulate a question to guide your research, respond to the following prompts. Your grade for this assignment depends on how clearly and thoroughly you respond to each prompt.
    1. For this assignment you may either find an interesting claim made in an article or short story that you read for this class, or I encourage you to find something from outside of class that you are interested in learning more about. This part should be 2-4 sentences. Remember from the syllabus the topics to avoid. (5 points)
    2. Explain your interest and acknowledge your readers. This should be 3-6 sentences long. (5 points)
Example: I am interested in this statement because I have always been told that I am supposed to go to college in order to get a good job. I wonder why I should take courses that are unrelated to what I want to do. I think my readers will be interested in this topic because they may also be thinking about the purpose of their education.
    3. Formulate a research question (or two or three related questions). (5 points)
Example: What is the purpose of a college education? (Why should people go to college?)
    4. Think of at least three possible answers for each research question. You will likely think of more answers once you start doing research for your paper. (10 points)
    Example:
    1. Most people may think that they go to college in order to be trained for future employment.
    2. Others may think that the purpose of a college education is to prepare people to be good citizens.
    3. Another reason may be for a person to learn to become independent.
    4. Some people may want to explore areas of study so that they can find out what their strengths are and decide what career they would like to pursue.
    5. What sources will you consult? Prepare an Annotated List of Works Cited. (The list for your final paper will contain only entries for those you cite.) You need 5 total sources and annotations. For each annotation, provide a very brief summary of the source and how you will use it in your paper. As you prepare this list, be sure that each work is relevant to your research question. Each annotation needs to be 100-150 words in length, grammatically correct, and written in a coherent, unified manner. You may not use quotes in the annotation. THE ENTIRE ANNOTATION MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS. (25 points)

Write a 2-3 page literary response essay based on the Piano Lesson
    Option 1
    Prompt:
    Literary Connection & Response Essay:
Write a 2-3 page essay using the play “The Piano Lesson” to give an interpretation & answer to this question:
“What do you do with your legacy, and how do you best put it to use?”
Explain how the above quote is expressed in the play/film “The Piano Lesson” regarding the piano & what it represents to their family history and struggles; explain, from your perspective, whether the characters made the right decision to keep the piano with Berniece; include at least one detailed paragraph where you connect your own past, present, and future with the idea of “legacy” (which can be expressed with an object, practice, perspective, tradition, belief, etc.), and why that is important to you. Include at least 3 direct quotes from the play/film & use correct MLA format citation indicating whether you are quoting the written play or film; as long as you note in your introduction that you are analyzing the play/film & note the author name, you do not necessarily need to use parentheticals moving forward, but you will still need quotes around character dialogue. You do not need to do additional research–this is your own interpretation of the play and how you connect with its themes.

  • Title: The Power of Color in The Bluest Eye: Challenging Preconceived Notions and Conveying Complex Ideas

Pay close attention to the use of color throughout The Bluest Eye. It is deliberate, and many of the colors communicate an array of ideas and emotions. Our understanding and acceptance of what certain colors symbolize are questioned throughout the novel. How do you see Morrison using color to express certain ideas? In what ways do you see Morrison challenging preconceived notions of color? What overall idea(s) do you think the author is conveying through this exploration. Don’t focus on blue, black, or white for this essay. You can mention those colors, but not as the central idea of the essay.
Use evidence from the text and at least one secondary source to clarify and strengthen your ideas.
The essay should be 5-7 pages and include a Works Cited page.

  • The Pitfalls of Critical Thinking: Examining Fallacies in “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin

First, choose one short story we have read in class from the list below that you would like to write about:
Hanif Kureishi’s “My Son the Fanatic”
    James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues”
Ursula Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”
    Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”
    Hwang Sok-Yong’s Familiar Things
Reread the story, looking specifically for 2-3 different kinds of pitfalls of critical thinking, or fallacies, that the characters make. Do not make the mistake of conflating the author with the character and claim that the author is using faulty reasoning; you must assume the author is intentionally having the characters commit fallacies for a reason. Make sure you name the specific fallacy and not just the category (for example, discuss biased consideration of evidence, not just an error of procedure). Consider:
What is the effect or use of that fallacy within the story? In other words, how is it being used as a rhetorical device by the author?
What impact does that fallacy have on the characters and/or the plot?
What is the through-line across those examples/fallacies? What theme, topic, issue, or pattern unites them?
How does that rhetorical device allow the author to provide some kind of social commentary?
What might the author be saying about the theme or issue that you have identified?
What is the lesson or takeaway for readers?
Use research to help you contextualize the story, allowing you to extrapolate an accurate, specific social commentary and overall argument from the work. Consider:
When and where was the work written?
What socio-historical, cultural events, or other real-world phenomena happened around that time and place?
How do you see these influencing the story?
How does it inform the social commentary you see, and how relevant is that social commentary to our current context?
Just as with the last paper, there should not be any sources about the story itself, so do not include the title or author in any of your search phrases. You also should not cite the textbook for definitions of fallacies; instead, show me your grasp of the definitions through your analysis. To support your claims, you will need to find sound, college-level sources that help you establish the context of your short story, speak to the real-life influences on and implications of the text, and build strong connections to the textual evidence (the fallacies) from the story.
Remember that I am not looking for a summary of the story. We have all read the stories and discussed them in class, so summarizing will not be giving any new or original information. If you find that most of your essay is making factual claims about the characters or plot points rather than interpretive, analytical claims that utilize the critical thinking concepts above, you probably need to condense the summary significantly and add more analysis.

  • “The Sixth Amendment: Protecting the Rights of the Accused” The Sixth Amendment: Protecting the Rights of the Accused The Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution, was adopted in 1791 to protect

Now that you have done some preliminary work with the Bill of Rights, it is time to do some research. Your assignment is to pick one of the Amendments and find out as much as you can about how it has affected laws in the United States. Your essay needs to address the following topics:
    1. What historical events led to its adoption?
    2. How has the Supreme Court interpreted the Amendment since it was adopted?
    3. Describe at least two court cases relevant to the Amendment.
This essay should follow all of the syllabus rules for Written Assignments and Essay Assignments. You will need to use MLA style to cite your sources. You must use at least three significant sources.
I expect this essay to be primarily informational with little or no original analysis. It is your job just to inform us about the history of the amendment you have chosen (I have chosen the 6th). It is acceptable for you to focus on just one aspect of the specific amendment. For instance, if you chose the First Amendment, you might just focus on the “freedom to assemble.”
Please keep your essay appropriately focused. You should be able to fulfill these requirements in 3-4 pages. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING ABOUT THE AMENDMENT.

  • “The Power of Oratory: A Comparative Analysis of Brutus and Antony in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar”

Research paper on Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar
The paper should be at least six pages in length, and should include at least two quotations or references to an academic resource.
You can choose to do a comparison/contrast paper. For example, you might compare Anthony to Brutus as a thinker and orator. Or, if you’ve read other Shakespeare plays, you could compare two characters from two plays, something like exploring Othello’s flaws as a critical thinker to a character in JC. Or, if you see a really strong connection, compare a character from JC to any other character in another book, play, or movie that you’ve read. Argue, for example, that Portia is comparable to Jane Eyre (ok, that example is a stretch, but you get the point)
Please let me know which one are you are choosing.
Cite the act, scene, and then line numbers. Page numbers are optional, unless you are using a copy of the play that doesn’t have line numbers. You will be using MLA citations and include an MLA formatted Works Cited Page. See this site for specific information about quoting from Shakespeare: https://www.bibliography.com/mla/how-to-cite-shakespeare-in-mla-works-cited/
