Film Analysis
Assignment Description
Each analysis will be based on a feature length film that highlights the theories and concepts we are learning in our course. Each film is related to a particular stage of development and must be viewed during the time we are studying that stage.
You will likely need to view the film you choose to analyze more than once in order to most accurately cite content. With this in mind, you should be prepared to rent or borrow videos either through an online source or from a library or video rental source. The instructor will provide free sources when possible, but these may not always be available.
You will be responsible for watching ALL of the films on your own (for homework) but you will only need to analyze ONE film (of your choice) for the analysis assignment. You must watch all the films because we will discuss how each one relates to relevant theories and milestones from the text and other course resources. The list of films is as follows (Choose one for each age/stage)

Title: Analyzing Domestic Violence Tactics in “No Visible Bruises”
As is quoted on Handout #9, “Domestic violence is about one person in a relationship using a pattern of behaviors to control the other person”. Two of the many ways abusers often control their victims, as is referenced on Handout #9, are by “Using Isolation (controlling what the victim does, whom she sees, talks to, etc.)” and “Using Emotional Abuse” (e.g., putting the victim down, making her feel bad about herself, making the victim feel worthless). After reading Handout #9 and finishing chapter 4 in the book No Visible Bruises,
Give at least one specific example of the ways Rocky isolated Michelle
and at lest one specific example of how Rocky used emotional abuse to control Michelle.
I UPLOADED THE PICTURES OF THE CHAPTER 4. MAKE SURE TO SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER WITH EVIDENCE. -
Title: “The Challenges and Needs of Stepfamilies: A Reflection on Chapter 15”
After reading Chapter 15, consider and answer the following questions:
Do you think Dr. Cherlin’s assertion that remarried/stepfamilies are an “incomplete institution” because they lack social scripts that would assist the family in coming together and assuming roles and responsibilities is still relevant and carries a measure of truth even decades after he made this observation and why?
As you read over the chapter and review relevant course materials, underscore and discuss some of the main issues or challenges that stood out to you concerning stepfamily dynamics.
When the chapter addressed stereotypes and stigmas, what is your perspective–what do you think shapes our views of step-families?
Moreover, based on what we learned from the chapter and even your own experiences and observations…
What do you think would help stepfamilies as they form a new family system?
Furthermore, what suggestions would you propose that would assist us as a society in helping stepfamilies? Do not hesitate to speak from personal experience.
