A Tale of Two Regions: A Comparison of Economic Geography in Western Europe and North Africa
Write and submit an essay that compares two geographic regions that we have covered in class. Comparisons should emphasize themes discussed in class such as cultural and historical geography, economic geography, geopolitical issues, or regional issues and landscapes. The essay should be at least 750 words.
Instructions:
Select two of the regions that we have covered so far in class (do not select the same two regions that you wrote about in your first essay):
Europe
Russia and the Near Abroad
the Middle East and North Africa
South and East Asia
Oceania and Antarctica
Sub-Saharan Africa
Latin America
the United States and Canada
Select one of the general topics that each chapter covers. Do not select Area and Population. Choose one of the others:
Physical Geography and Human Adaptation
Cultural and Historical Geographies
Economic Geography
Geopolitical Issues
Regional Issues and Landscapes
Once you’ve selected your topic, begin researching your essay. You should use the textbook to research your topic. If possible can somone please use the text book, “Fundamentals of World Regional Geography, Fourth Edition by Joseph J. Hobbs.” When you write the essay, include examples from the text and indicate what page numbers your examples come from. You can do this simply by including page number references at the end of your sentences, ex. (p. 183). For this essay, I want to see that you are able to find and analyze information from the textbook. So, you do not need to include any outside sources.
Here are some considerations that may help when you are selecting your topic and researching your essay:
Your essays will be most effective if you can find something similar between the different regions that results in a different outcome. For example, the Loess Hills are a fertile agricultural region of Iowa. China has the Loess Plateau, which contains similar mineral rich soil. However, the Loess Plateau in China is not a well-developed agricultural region. There are a variety of reasons why this is the case that you could discuss.
You do not need to write about the entire region covered in the textbook. You just need examples from two different regions. For example, you could compare western Europe to North Africa, or you could compare cities like Moscow and Dubai.
Similarly, you do not need to write about everything for each general topic a chapter covers. For example, if you selected Geopolitical Issues, you could just write about one issue.
After you have completed your research, write a well-developed essay a minimum of 750 words in length. You should follow a standard essay writing style. Include an introduction and conclusion with multiple paragraphs of support. You should also include a title, and you should put your name in the heading. Other than those basic considerations, I am not concerned about your formatting choices (margins, line spacing, etc.).
Grammar and mechanics is a very small portion of the grade. However, you should still proofread your essay after you’ve written it.
Once your essay is complete, save it as a PDF and upload it to Canvas.
Once you’ve submitted your essay on Canvas, it will be automatically scanned by Copyleaks, which is a built in Canvas tool that scans your essay for plagiarism and the use of generative AI. If it detects a significant level of duplication from other sources, I will contact you regarding your options.
If you have questions, you can ask them in the discussion, or you can just email me. -
“Growing Justice and Sustainability: Implementing a Community Garden in Downtown Phoenix’s Tent City” “Improving Neighborhood Socioeconomics and Infrastructure: A Proposal for Homewood”
This research paper but you will be making it as a STORY MAP and it is diving deep into my proposal which is implemented into a neighborhood of my choice. That neighborhood is in downtown Phoenix. The neighborhood is “Downtown Phoenix’s Tent City”. So for my proposal I wanted to implement a community garden in the area which would at the end of the day help the homeless in many ways. For the proposal that i had to submitthis is what I mentioned.
. Why this city? Why this neighborhood/intersection/area? Phoenix, Arizona stands as a pivotal city for this research proposal due to its substantial homeless population and intense urban heat island effects. The city has been experiencing significant growth, which, while beneficial in some aspects, has exacerbated socioeconomic disparities and environmental stress. A community garden in the homeless community neighborhood, particularly around the intersection of 12th Avenue and Jefferson Street, could offer considerable benefits. This area is notable for its high concentration of homeless shelters and services, making it a strategic location for community based interventions.
2. Demographics, Built Landscape, and Economic Base: The target area is characterized by a high density of underutilized land and abandoned lots, surrounded by low income housing and homeless shelters. The demographic profile of this area primarily includes homeless individuals and low income families, many of whom face challenges such as unemployment or underemployment. The economic base of the area is relatively weak, with few job opportunities available locally, particularly those that offer livable wages without requiring advanced education or specialized training.
4. Purpose of the Community Garden: The primary goal of the community garden is to provide both a sustainable source of nutritious food and therapeutic space for the homeless and economically disadvantaged residents. Additionally, the garden would serve as a community hub, fostering social cohesion, offering educational opportunities about nutrition and farming, and potentially providing some residents with volunteer or even paid work opportunities
4. Challenges in the Realm of Justice, Sustainability, and Diversity (JSD)
● Justice: There is a significant lack of access to healthy food options and recreational spaces, which perpetuates health disparities among the homeless and low income residents.
● Sustainability: The area suffers from environmental degradation and a lack of green spaces, which contributes to severe urban heat and poor air quality.
● Diversity: Economic and racial inequalities are pronounced, with a large portion of the homeless population being people of color who have limited access to essential services.
Final Project
All sources must be cited appropriately, using APA, Chicago, or MLA formatting
A complete bibliography must be included
You should use at least 8 sources for your project; at least 5 of these must be scholarly sources
Be sure to proofread and edit the document
Most projects will be 1200-1600 words of text. People write differently. Don’t “fluff” up to reach 1200 words – if you have covered everything well, you’re done. Similarly if your essay is longer, don’t edit out critical information to get down to 1600 words (but do edit out redundant or irrelevant text).
Evaluation of the project:
(15%) Your understanding of JSD is clear and the links to the concerns of the 3 Es are clearly laid out in your proposed project (B) or your project comparison (C) or provides the context for your discussion of the book. Please note that ChatGPT believes that JSD refers to something that has nothing to do with this class.
(15%) Your final project or review is clearly linked to course material and concepts we have covered this semester.
(20%) Your final project or review is well-organized with supporting images where appropriate; sources, including images, are correctly cited (in-text and in the bibliography); your text is free of typos
(20%) Context: for “B” you have a rich description of the neighborhood and its place in the city, including a clear discussion of socioecononomics and infrastructure. Maps and tables are appropriate here.
This is what was posted by my professor.
This proposal should focus on a specific site and include specific recommendations that address the problems you have outlined in your introduction. For instance, you would not attempt to address air pollution in Pittsburgh. Instead, you would focus on a specific neighborhood, such as Homewood, and identify the challenges facing the area. You would then outline the specifics of a pregram that could address some of these challenges. For instance, if you are proposing a community garden, you would show where you would locate it, who would benefit and how (what are the demographics of the immediate neighborhhood? how will people get there? What challenges it would address (where are supermarkets and corner stores located? What do we know about public health in the neighborhood? Would this also address a lack of green space in the neighbohood? I stransportation (levels of var ownership and connectivity of public transit) relevant to your proposal? Are you creating jobs?

“Exploring Global Connections: An Interview with a Non-US Native” Connecting Theory to Practice: Insights from a Guest Speaker Interview
Objective: In this digital age where we can make friends with people globally, it’s rare to not have a friend, co-worker, family member or acquaintance who was born and/or raised in a different country than the United States. Your assignment is to find a person in your life who is not from the United States. Associate where they are from with the appropriate chapter in the textbook. A good example would be, if you had a friend who was from Germany, you would choose Chapter 8, Europe. Then, you will write a paper based on specific guidelines using your book by interviewing your subject about their home country, and then using the book to help guide your questioning.
It won’t be a hard, but it will take you a bit of time to develop a quality piece of work. You can start on it and submit your paper at any time during the semester, but it is your final project. There will be no final comprehensive exam that encompasses the entire book/semester. This should be way more interesting than that and should really help you hone in on and become more of an expert on a certain part of the physical world. I hope it also provides you with a cool experience to visit with someone with a different cultural experience than you likely have had.
The final paper in the course is going to involve you conducting an interview to learn more about a person who originates from a different world regional geography than you do. This means, I’d prefer that you do not interview someone from the United States. That sounds quite specific yet open ended, doesn’t it? Let me help you narrow it down with specifics.
In your life, you may know someone who originates from a different country or continent, or, someone who’s roots originate from overseas (or another country on our own continent), from a culture much different from your own. The purpose of this final paper is to have a conversation with someone and allow yourself the chance to be immersed in a cultural geography experience. It could be a relative, friend, co-worker, anyone really. Report back to me what you have learned. Please ask the following questions of your gracious interviewee. These are mandatory questions. You may also add questions of your own as they arise, but the following questions are required.
1- Check out this cool blog written about how to conduct an interview. Now, I know you aren’t trying to collect a life story from someone, but you are trying to gain some insight into a person’s life.
https://blog.enwoven.com/home/2016/5/23/how-to-interview-others-to-capture-their-life-stories
2- Write a paper that is at least 7 pages long (it can be as long as you would like it to be and the cover page does not include that 5-page minimum). Double spaced. 12 point font. Arial Font. Please start the paper at the top of the page with ONLY your name and the name of the person you are interviewing. Your writing style can be conversational. You aren’t writing hard news for your local NBC station. This is supposed to be fun and informative for you and for me. Write like you would talk, but depending on who you are, don’t write like a pirate. Enjoy the process! Seven pages will go fast.
Points to consider when answering questions in the body of your paper:
1- Who are you interviewing, and how do you know them? Why did you choose them? Where are they from (be specific)? (10 points). Describe this in detail.
2- Which chapter is best associated with the person you are interviewing? Choose only one chapter, even if the person you are interviewing has extensive worldly experiences. Be clear about the chapter you choose. (10 points)
3- Choose your own unique questions to ask them based on what you learned in the chapter. These questions are of your own choosing and can relate to anything chapter based which you think could help you learn more about the person you have chosen and their culture (in general, since each chapter is basically about culture and more). Initiate at least 7 questions and list them in your paper along with the answers they provide. (10 points)
4- How do these 7 questions relate to what you read about or learned from a potential guest speaker? Pay special attention to trying to connect what you learned to the interview. Be very specific about how what your interviewee’s experience relate to the chapter WITH citation from your textbook. (20 points)
Each of these 4 points must be answered in the body of your paper. You will be graded on content as well as grammar. Please use spell check. You will not be graded on format. I don’t mind which writing format you choose, just be consistent. This is not English class. You do not need to follow APA.
This paper is worth 120 points. 10 points per point (listed above). 20 points for grammar and spelling. 50 points for quality content and effort.
Make up a person, or choose one you know, it would be fine.

“Fostering Justice, Sustainability, and Diversity Through a Community Garden in Downtown Phoenix’s Tent City” Introduction: The city of Phoenix, Arizona is facing a growing homeless population and the effects of urbanization, which have led to socioeconomic disparities and “Revitalizing Homewood: A Proposal for Addressing Socioeconomic Challenges and Improving Infrastructure in a Pittsburgh Neighborhood”
This research paper and it is diving deep into my proposal which is implemented into a neighborhood of my choice. That neighborhood is in downtown Phoenix. The neighborhood is “Downtown Phoenix’s Tent City”. So for my proposal I wanted to implement a community garden in the area which would at the end of the day help the homeless in many ways. For the proposal that I had to submit, this is what I mentioned.
(20%) Context: for “B” you have a rich description of the neighborhood and its place in the city, including a clear discussion of socio economics and infrastructure.
You would then outline the specifics of a program that could address some of these challenges. For instance, if you are proposing a community garden, you would show where you would locate it, who would benefit and how (what are the demographics of the immediate neighborhood? how will people get there? What challenges it would address (where are supermarkets and corner stores located? What do we know about public health in the neighborhood? Would this also address a lack of green space in the neighborhood? In transportation (levels of car ownership and connectivity of public transit) relevant to your proposal? Are you creating jobs?
