Discuss: 
The War Powers Act of 1973 was passed at the tail end of the Vietnam War as a means of limiting presidential power related to war.  The act required the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of using U.S. forces in any conflict.  It also required the president to seek congressional authorization within 60 days for troops to remain engaged.  However, since 1973, the act has been seen as a massive expansion of the president’s war powers because it grants the president power to commit troops with few restraints, and Congress has, on multiple occasions, failed to check presidential use of war powers.  Additionally, the last time Congress declared war was 1941, meaning that all U.S. conflicts since have been fought with Congressional authorization outside of its power to declare war.
In your opinion, have presidential war powers expanded too much?  Has Congress abdicated its responsibility to check presidential power when it comes to the military?  Why or why not?  Be sure to cite specific examples of presidential use of military power in your response.

I always like students to start thinking about Texas politics by forming an opinion about individual politicians and their personalities. Next students need to understand the complexity of the political system in terms of voting and political party organization. Do a keyword search for “who is my representative” to start. From there you should be able to answer the following questions. Email me if you have any difficulty. This assignment revolves around Texas Politics. Answer the following questions. Answer each question below.
What county do you live in? What is your voting precinct number? This is based on your address of residence. You may contact the elections administrator of your county either by phone, locating their web page, or do a keyword search of “what is my voting (or election) precinct”. Voting precincts are different than commissioner precincts and justice of the peace precincts so make sure to know the differences. The precinct you live in determines which races will be on your ballot and where you vote on Election Day. Travis County allows voters to vote at any voting place. Not all Texas counties do and so voters must vote in the voting location identified by the county for a particular precinct(s). Voting precincts are the most local (basic) voting unit and by law cannot have more than 5,000 registered voters.

One hot topic of political debate at the present moment is student loan repayment. Each student will prepare an 800-word memorandum addressed to the President of the United States of America or another high-level official of the federal government. The memo will examine an issue that concerns the United States- Latin American relationship in regard to questions of crime, drugs, violence, migration, and human rights. The aim of the memo is to teach students how to build a historically informed argument in relation to present-day phenomena that have a considerable impact on U.S. politics and policies. Abortion has long been one of the most reliably contentious issues in American society. For five decades, a woman’s right to access an abortion has been upheld via Supreme Court ruling in the 1973 case of  Roe V. Wade. Since that time, access to abortion has been reliably upheld time and again, year after year, by justices from both the “left” and the “right”, and despite the desire by some more conservative groups to overturn that decision, had largely been considered “settled” and “precedential”, as newly appointed Supreme Court justice Ketanji Brown Jackson stated during her nomination process. The reason for this assumption is because the U.S. legal system is built up the concept of precedent, or “stare decisis”, a Latin term which means to “stand on decided cases”. What this means is that U.S. courts, including the Supreme Court, is beholden to consider not only previous decision by the court, but also the length of time, and the number/veracity of those challenges over the years. As previously mentioned,  Roe had been reaffirmed time and again by both liberal and conservative justices, but we now know that the court, driven largely by the new conservative majority within, has rendered an opinion that goes against previous precedent by citing that the original decision was arrived at via poor legal reasoning, and which has effectively overturned federal guarantees of the right to access an abortion at will. 
The reasoning given for this massive shift is that abortion was not part of the American legal fabric created by the constitution, but rather by improper interpretations of the rights conferred by the constitution at the time that the case was first heard. It should be noted that the Supreme Court ruling does not mean that all access will be denied, it only means that individual states will be allowed to determine how wide to grant access and under what conditions. For some women in more liberal states, they will likely find themselves less affected personally, while women living in states like Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, etc. will see their access significantly curbed to the point where some would consider it to be nonexistent since the restrictions put into place often require the services to be sought out before a woman may even know that she’s pregnant, and also by not providing for exceptions on issues of rape, incest, or other medical conditions which would result in a nonviable birth but which may not be life-threatening to the woman. This landmark opinion by the court also reverberates beyond simply the issue of abortion itself, given that it was overturned on the basis that there is no tradition of this practice being part of the fabric of American life at the time the Constitution was written. What do you think about this issue and the court’s ruling that overturns  Roe v. Wade, do you agree or disagree with it, and why?
