  • Title: The Complexities of the Black American Identity in the 21st Century: Reflections on Progress and Challenges

At the turn of the century, the black American identity was characterized by class, gender, sexuality, and generational diversity. The black middle and working classes entered the new century more confident about their status in America. However, gaps still existed between black Americans and white Americans. In 2006, the median income for black households was 61 percent of the median income for white households; in 2010, the Urban League calculated the equality index—the relative status of blacks versus whites in American society—at 71.8 percent.
However, by 2010 nearly half of all black families, or about six million households, were wealthy enough to own their own homes, and a fourth of black adults occupied management or professional jobs. During these years, 2.4 million African American households had an annual income of $75,000 or more.
Free from the subjugation that marked their forefathers’ lives— disfranchisement, lynching, Jim Crow segregation—this new generation of African Americans was optimistic about its place in the nation. Although middle-class black Americans still had to pay the “black tax” (meaning that they had to work twice as hard as whites for the same outcome some would argue), African Americans moving into the 21st century felt freer, and in fact were freer, than any previous generation of African Americans.
In 2008, the United States elected its first black president. For some, this moment marked the end of American racism. Others observed the difficulty that President Obama encountered when he talked about race, and the way that his opponents racialized their opposition to his policies, and concluded that the nation remained racially polarized. Moving into present day we are now faced with numerous issues, Black Lives Matter, Defund the Police, Me Too, Gun Violence and the killing of unarmed black people in the press, COVID and debates on critical race theory. I want you to think about the history presented and address the following questions.
What can we do to improve the current political climate? Or, can there be anything done?
Can we say we are living in a post-racial society? Your response should be minimum four paragraphs or 1 – 2 pages and please respond to all questions.

Answer the following: What was happening at the time the document was written? What is the author’s main point or argument? How were the author’s ideas and actions shaped by the social context of their times (how did the historical time period impact the chosen document)? What is your own response (argument) to the ideas presented by the author (e.g., agreement or disagreement, revulsion or admiration, or thinking about things in a new way) as a human living in the modern era?
BE SURE TO ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS NOTED ABOVE!!!!!
You may choose from the following primary source documents: (ONLY CHOOSE 1)
John Smith, “Description of Virginia,” 1624
John Winthrop, “A Model of Christian Charity,” 1630
    Thomas Paine, “Common Sense,” 1776
Thomas Jefferson, “Declaration of Independence,” 1776
    Submission Requirements:
The opening paragraph should provide a road map of what you are arguing and how you will prove it. Students will be graded on how well they are able to explain assigned course readings and lessons, argue their point of view, and support their argument using direct evidence from the assigned readings. Be sure to answer ALL questions noted in the prompt.
You MUST include a thesis statement. This is a specific argument that sets up the direction of your submission. When you formulate your thesis statement, it should answer the prompt directly, and create an argument that you will prove in the body paragraphs of your essay. Your thesis statement should be clear and concise. An example thesis statement would be: “While ~the author of this document’s~ main points reflect the time period it was written in, I cannot agree with their ideas, due to reason 1, reason 2, and reason 3.”
Underline your thesis statement. This should be a very strong argument that you will prove to the reader through evidence in the body paragraphs.
Support the claims that you make throughout your essay with direct quotes from the assigned reading. You MUST include AT LEAST ONE DIRECT QUOTE FROM YOUR CHOSEN PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMENT.
You must also include AT LEAST ONE DIRECT QUOTE FROM THE TEXTBOOK or WEEK 2 CLASS GUIDE IN YOUR ESSAY.
Be sure to cite your sources. You will need a works cited page at the end of your essay. You must use a consistent format for both your in text citations and Works Cited Page (See the OWL at Purdue or email me for help on this).
Format your paper using Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced.
Your paper should be 2-3 full pages.
Give your paper a strong proofread. This is a college level essay – you will be graded on grammar, spelling, style, word diversity, etc.
YOUR PAPER SHOULD BE ORGANIZED! There should be a clear introduction, argument, body paragraphs, and conclusion

  • “The Impact of Social Media on Interpersonal Relationships: A Case Study of Generation Z”

For your 2 page research paper you can choose any topic that the textbook covers in chapters 1 through 20. For this short assignment please use your textbook as a source and 2 other outside sources. They may be books or websites. Please use the Chicago format and use the footnotes option in Word for your sources, no Works Cited Page/Bibliography is necessary for this assignment, in lieu, please insert at least 3 footnotes. Also, I know a Title Page is typically how to start a paper in Chicago but please do not make one, that is not necessary, instead please put your name, the name of this course, the date you’re submitting, and my name in the upper left hand side of your first page double spaced, center your title underneath those items, and start with your paper after indenting to the left. The entire document should be in Times New Roman, 12 point font and double spaced. If you have never used Chicago format before please visit this website that should be able to answer any questions you may have: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/chicago_manual_17th_edition/cmos_formatting_and_style_guide/books.html This is the link on how to cite books. For help on citing periodicals or web cites click on those options to the left once you have clicked the link. Please message me if you have any questions about this

  • “Dissenting Opinion: An Analysis of the Supreme Court’s Decision in Miranda v. Arizona (1966)”

For this assignment, you will choose one Supreme Court case from either Warren, Burger, Rehnquist or Roberts Courts. This means you must pick a cased decided after 1953, provided that the case has not been overturned by another case, constitutional amendment or statement from the Court. For instance, you may NOT write a paper on Plessy v Ferguson (1896) because that case was overturned by Brown v Board of Education (1954). Additionally you can’t write your paper on the Dred Scott decision (1857) because it was overturned by the 14th amendment. Finally, you can’t write your paper about Korematsu v US (1944) because the Court expressly overturned the case in 2018. You will write a dissenting opinion on the case in question. Your task will be to write a convincing argument to explain why the Supreme Court’s decision was, in your opinion, incorrect. You must base your reasoning on Constitutional arguments, precedents, and history. It is not enough to say that the decision was wrong and unfair. You must demonstrate your grasp of the issue presented before the Court. This is a 1000 WORD paper with a 10% grace in either direction. You absolutely should be quoting the Constitution, other Court decisions, or other dissenting decisions in Chicago style formatting. If you don’t know how to use Chicago style I’ve attached a sample paper. Please format your paper to look like the sample. If you can’t make footnotes work please let me know and I will help you. While this paper will almost certainly require a citation or two, I am not looking for direct quotes. With only 1000 words to work with you must be presenting your original argument for why the case was decided incorrectly. Prior to beginning your paper you should present your case to the professor to ensure that the case has not been overturned and that there is a decent opportunity to write a dissent. You are not limited to decisions are opinions that predate your case. For instance, you may use current Court opinions and dissents in order to argue a case that was decided years prior. You will see this in the example paper. Your 1000 word limit does not include your citations. You must cite anything that you needed to look up or anything that is not common knowledge. Even if you learned something in a previous class and therefore do not need look up that information it is important that you cite the information anyway as you are not yet an expert in the matter. Additionally, the requirement of citations (there must be at least 2 separate sources and 3 citations total) helps to ensure that you are writing your paper rather than having a paper generated by AI. Please be aware that you must submit your paper through D2L as it will upload your paper to turnitin.com to check for both plagiarism and AI usage. In the event that you can’t find a case that you believe to be decided incorrectly please reach out and I can try to point in your the correct direction, but understand that most cases that make it to the Court are not decided unanimously and therefore at least one member of the Court already wrote a dissenting opinion.

  • “The Importance of Scholarly Research in Academic Writing: A Guide for Strong Argumentative Papers”

Informational” papers can earn a strong “B.”
“A” papers will argue a position and deal with some academic issue grappled with by scholars.
Websites: Scholarly articles and books accessed online are absolutely acceptable, but PLEASE cite them with “normal” publication information: Author, title, publisher, date, page numbers (as if they were found in hard copy). For this class DO NOT include web links. Look at your text books. Do you find web links in the bibliography? Cite everything (book, journal, etc.) as if you found it in hard copy. Author, title, place of publication, publisher, date, etc. Or name of the journal, volume, date, pages, etc. That way I know it’s peer-reviewed, not an online encyclopedia or somebody’s blog…
If an article is not published in a serious academic journal (and is not “peer-reviewed” scholarship) it should not be used. Encyclopedias of any kind (including online encyclopedias) are not considered scholarly research, though they can certainly be used for your own background knowledge.
Do not include web links at all for my course. Ever see web links in your textbooks? I use the web all the time, but I cite as if I found in hardcopy without a web link. You might give “real” books a try in addition to journal articles. Ever try google books? Regular Google search; from drop-down menu select “books.” Some pages missing but it’s a gold mine! We even have a library, which for some reason nobody uses!
Number of sources: no minimum number; the more the better! AT LEAST half a dozen. Read serious academic articles to get a sense of how much research is actually done in the scholarly world.
A serious research paper should reflect a serious amount of research. This is not possible in the last few days of the term.
